Busting the Myths About Nightlife in Slovenia with the Guys from Joker Out. Warming Up Before the Concert, written by: Anita BogojeviÄ.
We didnāt force them to take photos at the entrance! They agreed themselves, first to meet us on the rooftop of the Sinnerman Jazz Club, and then to pose for us. The conversation itself went by incredibly quickly and casually, as if we had been friends for longer than their band's official 10 years of existence.
As we're getting ready to ādance, love, play all night and not count the hours until the dawnā at the Port of Belgrade on the 23rd of August and truly bring the words of the song Carpe Diem to life, we spoke with Joker Outās vocalist Bojan CvjetiÄanin and guitarist Kris GuÅ”tin about their views on life, going out, touring and anecdotesā¦
Itās time to bust the myth about Slovenia: Is nightlife in Ljubljana really sleepy, and where do you actually take your friends when you go out?
Bojan:Ā Well, I have to say that for someone who came from Belgrade, I believe Ljubljana can seem like a place where you have nowhere to take your friends. Itās not like that every single day of the year, but unfortunately, it is most of the time. Of course, there are days when there are good parties and when suddenly all of Ljubljana is full of cool events and concerts and everything, but generally speaking, itās a much sleepier city than Belgrade.
I was walking around last night⦠Well, okay, I did go to Skadarlija¹, but still, we donāt have anything like Skadarlija back home. I mean, a place where you can walk around at 1 a.m. on a Monday and there are people everywhere, music everywhere, and something is happening. So in that sense, unfortunately, itās not a myth.
¹Skadarlija is a historic bohemian street and neighborhood in central Belgrade, known for traditional Serbian restaurants (kafane), and generally being one of Belgradeās best-known nightlife and dining areas.
Kris:Ā But there are some places if you happen to catch the right weekend. For example, Metelkova, which is like an autonomous cultural zone in Ljubljana that has, I donāt know, 10-15 clubs, and on Fridays and Saturdays thereās an event going on in every one of them. But itās a bit more of an alternative scene, so it depends a little on what someone is looking for⦠You also have Pop Nation at club Tiffany.
Thatās a gay club, the only gay club in Ljubljana, but it genuinely has the best music because they only play 2000s music. I mean Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears⦠That kind of stuff. I think they have the best taste in party music. I wish there were more commercial clubs that played that kind of music, but thatās why I go to Tiffany.
The real āJoker Outā mania: What anecdotes follow you from your tours?
Bojan:Ā When we started playing around Europe, I donāt know, we would arrive by bus in Poland 24 hours before the concert, and people would already be queuing outside the venue to get in 24 hours in advance, in minus eight degrees Celsius.
āEveryone was wrapped up in those thermal blankets, it was honestly a sight you couldnāt believe was happening to usā
Then we had quite a lot of people fainting at concerts⦠At the UK tour, at every concert, we had to stop two or three times. Manchester, London, Glasgow, it was like you didnāt know what was happening, it was way too hot in the clubs⦠But I remember having to stop every single concert two or three times so they could take people out because they had fainted. So those are some of the slightly Beatles-like scenes weāve experienced.
Bojan:Ā We have around 300 fans who are always in the front rows. Not all of them are at every concert, but theyāre at quite a lot of them.
āThereās one person weāve seen at 90% of all our concerts since Eurovisionā
Kris:Ā That one fan, who is actually from Scandinavia, told us half a year ago that she had been to 100 concerts since Eurovision. All over Europe. And she always comes to soundcheck too, if itās open to fans. We met her and gave her some awards. We love her a lot!
Bojan:Ā You know how cool she is, the woman was literally, we said to her, like: āHey, please let us give you some merchandise, just to thank you,ā and she said: āNo, thank you, I donāt need anything, I have everything. Iāve already bought everything.ā Like, āI donāt want anything, you know, thatās enough for me. Iāve spent all my money on you guys.ā
How did you go from battle-of-the-bands competitions to becoming the most played band on the radio?
Kris:Ā We have quite a lot of opportunities for young musicians in Slovenia, and I think thatās really important for developing the young music scene, because when you start a band, the only places where you can perform are some of these small pubs. Thatās the only opportunity you have to show what you can do with a band, meet other artists and somehow make new connections.
āWe first got real media attention when we won Å pil liga, which is the biggest competition for high-school bandsā
Bojan:Ā Itās very difficult to expect young musicians to be at the level that a stage actually demands if they never have an opportunity to perform on one. And not just to show themselves, but also to experience what being on a stage actually means. Because in those competitions, we came into contact with professional sound systems, people who were professional sound engineers, professional lighting engineers and so on.
Those are all very important things that have to go through a young musicianās mind, theyāre all experiences you need to have in order to one day command a stage. Because you canāt just walk onto a stage and command it if there are a thousand technical things that youāve literally never encountered or even seen before. Itās like going to compete in Formula 1, but you donāt even know how to start the Formula 1 car.
Which of your songs is your favourite and why?
Kris:Ā Well, I always like our newest songs the most because theyāre the most interesting, I havenāt listened to them that many times, so Iāll say our latest single, Odsevi Sonca.
Bojan:Ā Ako toga viÅ”e neÄe biti. Thatās the song I like. I never listen to our music, but if I did listen to something, Iād listen to that. And Everybodyās Waiting.
Kris:Ā When we released Carpe Diem, it was the most-played song, the most-listened-to song in the Slovenian language ever. It was the most-played song on Slovenian radio last year, which is very difficult to achieve as a rock act in Slovenia because every year thereās one female pop artist who dominates, so that was the only year when a rock band was on top.
Bojan:Ā Weāre really proud of that.
And if you had to put on a concert that wasnāt just your own songs, but something youād play purely for yourselves, what would you play?
Bojan:Ā Donāt ask us that. Weād have completely different answers for what weād play purely for ourselves. (laughs) Some songs by Toma ZdravkoviÄ, Džej, SaÅ”a MatiIJā¦
²Toma ZdravkoviÄ and Džej were legendary Serbian singers known for emotional, melancholic, kafana-style songs.
SaÅ”a MatiÄ is a popular Serbian pop-folk singer known for romantic songs and ballads.
āIād probably play some more traditional urban or kafana songsā
Kris:Ā I donāt know, Iād probably want to play music by Arctic Monkeys. That would be really fun to play live.
Bojan:Ā Weāre two completely different worlds! (sings through laughter)
³Dva smo sveta razliÄita (Weāre Two Completely Different Worlds) is a song by Toma ZdravkoviÄ.
Kris:Ā Duality of band. (laughs)
What do you sing when someone you used to date is in the audience, and what when someone particularly dear to you is there?
Bojan:Ā The same thing, because weāve already decided in advance what the setlist is going to be. Although I specifically remember in Finland, when we played that double show at Tavastia, a girl from the USA came and had a sign saying that she had come from the USA just to hear the song Proti toku, and that song wasnāt on the setlist, so we added Proti toku to the setlist.
And I know that at soundchecks, when they were open to fans, we sometimes played songs that werenāt planned for the same reason, because someone would literally say, āOkay, I came to this concert from God knows where, but Iād really love to hear that song,ā and we never play it, so we played it at soundcheck.
Kris:Ā Sometimes the problem is that we havenāt rehearsed those songs.
āSometimes, bro, weād embarrass ourselves like idiots, play the song catastrophically. But itās the soundcheck, whatever.ā
What is it like when you come up with a new idea for a song, do they ever make fun of you?
Bojan:Ā Itās always a little⦠Itās not like Iām ashamed, but youāre very vulnerable at that moment when youāre showing something new for the first time, and youāre very sensitive to every movement, every look, every reaction. So itās absolutely not the most pleasant experience every time it happens, but I think we crossed that line a long time ago where weād be dishonest with each other and pat each other on the back and tell each other how good something is when it isnāt. So Iāve got used to honest reactions, and I often change some things.
There was one song on the second album where I wasnāt happy with the lyrics, so I completely changed the lyrics.
āAnd then Jan came and said to me, āHey, can I talk to you?āā
Then we sat down and he said: āYou know, I really liked that first version of the lyrics, it really clicked with me⦠I connected with it, I felt that song, and this second version just isnāt the same for me. Would you bring it back?ā And I said, āBro, if you felt something, Iāll revert it back.ā And I reverted it back, and that was that.
Looking back on what I consider to be an unexpected collaboration with Devito on the hit Supersonic, the guys point out that the project served as a ānew toyā that brought back the joy of creating, guided by the idea that music doesnāt always have to be overly serious, but can simply be fun.
With a smile, they added that they themselves absolutely love the song and canāt wait for its Belgrade premiere, jokingly promising a true āgaseriā“ā atmosphere with champagne bottles flying through the air.
ā“"Gaseriā are members of a local Balkan youth subculture who like to show off their money and expensive possessions. The word comes from āgasā and the phrase āide gas,ā meaning to party, show off, and live fast.
What are your favourite festivals? Is there somewhere youād particularly like to perform?
Bojan:Ā For me, it was always a goal⦠like, playing at Sziget was a sign of success to me. And the year before last, we played the Main Stage at Sziget, so as far as Iām concerned, Iāve done my thing, bye.
Kris:Ā Yeah, that was the highest dream. But come on, Glastonbury. That would be nice⦠But Iām sad, Iād still like to play the Main Stage at Exit again.
Bojan:Ā Me too. It was phenomenal, it really was an excellent concert, and I believe Exit will come back. Someone has to exit for Exit to come backāµ. (laughs)
āµThe EXIT Festival stopped holding its event in Novi Sad, Serbia after 25 years due to severe political and financial pressure from the government after the festival openly supported student-led anti-corruption protests.
For the spring, they are announcing a new album and a new tour, promising to properly make the rounds of the festivals and play in Serbia at least 5-6 times. They particularly want to correct the āabsurdityā that they still havenāt performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so they hope that one of the coming years will see the stars align for a trip to OK Fest.
Bojan:Ā Are you sure you werenāt going to ask us what weāre preparing for the concert? (laughs)
Anita:Ā Donāt worry, I wasnāt, I wasnāt, because youāve already said quite a few times that the audience should find that out for themselves, right?
Bojan:Ā Yeah, we make up answers, bro, we pull answers out of our asses. āWhat can the audience expect at the concert?ā ā well, our music!
Organised by the production company Long Play, Bojan, Kris, Jan, Jure and Nace will put on a night full of energy, charm and hits from the albums āUmazane misliā, āDemoniā and āSouvenir Popā. Alongside special guest Luka RaciÄ from the band BuÄ Kesidi, the audience can also expect a special dose of euphoria with this yearās megahit Supersonic, created in collaboration with Devito.
Interest in the concert is reaching its peak - the Fan Pit has already completely sold out, but regular tickets are still available and can be found on theĀ tickets.rsĀ website. Secure your spot on time, ādance all night, love each other, and donāt count the hours until the dawnā!
I know a lot of ppl hate this idea but I would absolutely love to have separate rooms w my spouse if I was married. like we can sleep in each others beds and probably would a lot of the time but also having your own space exclusively for your things which you can decorate however you want and donāt have to compromise on someone elses wants or worry about their mess and also can decompress there if u do want alone time would be amazing
