JO July Drabbles - Day 30 - Home

Nothing better than coming home after a long trip and having your cat greet you at the door.

Jan throws the door open and immediately gets rewarded with an excited trill. Igor runs towards him, happily chittering, his tail raised and the tip of it happily flicking left and right. “Oh, baby,” Jan exclaims as he drops his bags and crouches down to scoop up his cat. Igor rubs his face against his neck and chin, squirming only slightly when Jan smacks two loud kisses against his head. “Have you missed me?” “Meow!” says Igor before wriggling out of Jan’s grasp. He doesn’t let off him completely though, sneaking around his legs, leaving his telltale trail of white fur against Jan’s dark pants legs. “I thought so,” Jan agrees, bending down to run a hand over Igor’s back. Igor hot on his heels and infront-behind-around his feet, Jan does a speed-run of his coming home routine and shoves his bags into the living room, before he finally opens the bedroom door. “Oh, baby,” Jan exclaims again, pure and raw delight filling him at seeing his bed, a feeling similar to seeing his cat again after weeks on the road. Bless his past self for changing the sheets before he left. He changes into sweatpants about as fast as he can, then dives underneath his duvet. Igor is at his side in an instant, stepping around him before settling next to his pillow. Jan could explode from happiness. He is finally home after a successful tour, he gets to sleep in his own bed again, his parents have conveniently dropped Igor off to be waiting for him, and he has plenty of time to sleep for two days straight before his responsibilities start up again. Igor nuzzles into his hand. What a time to be alive.

31 - Pride (542 words)

For my fellow folks who are not leading the parade 'out'.

Disclaimer that I don't know how they identify and am not making assumptions, this is for fun.

Jure surveys them with hands on hips. “Why am I the only one dressed for the parade?”

“I didn't realise there was a dress code,” Kris retorts. “Are you dressed up?”

He's already seen a couple of drag queens on their way to the meeting point and that is what he calls dressed up.

Jure impatiently gestures to himself, pointing out each item in turn. “Light green T-shirt, dark green jacket, grey jeans, black shoes. I even got a white belt to finish it off.”

“And those colours mean?”

“It's the aromantic flag! I knew nobody would recognise it.”

“Sorry-”

“No, it's fine, actually. I can be loud with my colours, better than a flag that's more popular.”

Bojan looks down, fiddling with his wrist, drawing Kris’s attention to the pink, purple and blue wristband he's wearing.

“Is that the bi flag?” Jure asks.

“Yeah.”

“Oh great, I'm not alone.”

“Nobody will see that,” Jan points out.

“I don't know if I want them to,” Bojan admits. “I mean, I guess it'd be cool to get a nod from someone, but… It's for me, really. I know a rainbow would be more recognisable, but that's more of an umbrella. This is my flag.”

Kris’s heart hurts a little. Bojan's relationship with his identity is so protective. He still looks at Pride as if he's on the outside, trying to gather the courage to ask if he can join them, but the idea of coming out to anyone besides his trusted few visibly scares him.

“See, Bojan came prepared,” Jure says. “What about you two?”

Nace waves his little rainbow fan. “I like the umbrella.”

Kris isn't sure if Nace even has an identity. He was straight until joining the band and there's no flag or label for ‘married-the-first-man-you-dated’.

“I've got this.” Jan points to his bright yellow T-shirt.

“That's not a flag.”

“No, but each of the stripes represent different people so I just took the colour that reflects me. It's like Bojan said, it doesn't matter if other people know who I am. I know.”

“Kris?” Jure asks.

“Me?” He startles. “I don't have colours. I like women.”

“That's okay. It's not like it used to be,” Bojan says reassuringly. “Going to Pride doesn't mean you're definitely LGBTQ anymore. There are families here. We're all just turning out to support the people marching, so we can stand out or blend in however we want.”

“And you do have colours, although they're really boring. Black and white.” Jure sticks his tongue out. “You could man the lesbian flag if you want.”

He lifts a small flag from his bag and offers it. Kris accepts. Jure continues rummaging.

“And who wants to take the asexual flag? I didn’t see a single one last year and they deserve to be represented.”

“I will. I like the purple,” Nace admits.

“He gets two flags?” Bojan complains. “I'm jealous now.”

“Then how about this?”

“Ooh! Those colours are awesome. What is it?”

“Polyam.”

Bojan gasps happily.

“I want that one,” Jan protests. “It's got pi on it.”

“Coming right up, sir.”

“Did you bring a flag for every single identity?” Kris asks.

“Don't be silly,” Jure replies cheerfully. “I brought multiple.”
