I really realllyyy love your art. The way you play with color is so intresting, it’s bright and colorful but the way I like it ( in the way bright & colorful that really didny hurt the eyes at least for me, i hope it doesnt hurt you? ). How do you pick color in general or play with color ? I see that you rarely use tumblr I guess, but I’m too afraid to ask in twitter
dusting off my inbox jkasdlfhs - Hii always appreciative of ppl that compliment my coloring;; I have weak eyes too so I totally get your comment lol
I'm sure there are color theory videos out there that can explain it better than me! Here are my quick guidelines. Sorry it might be long/boring. But these helped me lots, after watching tons of videos ...and drawing a lot of SP:
Expanding your visual library for color combinations - If I'm using it in my illustration, it's because I've either practiced or seen that color combination in other paintings before! Understand why you like certain art and try it out! I saw a lot of people use indigo for the shadows > I tried it out and liked it > I continued to do it and found what worked for me
Example art: I saw a piece that used bright yellow as the background. The characters' colors were purple/indigo. I never knew the color combo could be so pretty until then
Playing with Color Layers - In the early stages of coloring, I experiment with a lot of different filters and layer types! Foundation is important. If you don't like your colors at the "base" stages, you might not like your end results. Or it might just take you way longer to finish the piece. My personal fav layer settings: overlay, soft light, color dodge, difference, exclusion.
Past me used to just color. Then, slap a filter (like overlay/multiply) at the very *end* of my art process. And I just hoped it looked good at the end aksldfh
I do that process throughout my coloring planning phase now! Like color > adjust colors > continue coloring>argh adjust > continue coloring. Especially before I commit to polishing it up. When I do my rendering/final touches, I don't use filters much anymore. Which might be why they "pop" out more! Because the base colors are cohesive now.
(Example Art: Kenny + Tweek. I was adjusting their bg and overall colors a lot... I didn't know whether I wanted neon yellow or green. Or if they should overall have a purple or pink tone. After I settled with those things, that indigo you see (on Kenny's Hair and Tweek's clothes) are my own personal color choices. And weren't adjusted dramatically with filters. Which might be why they stand out more )
Background is kingggg - I do background first now! Since the atmosphere, lighting, and colors depends on your background. If you have your background figured, you can figure the rest easier.
Limit your colors - consider what main color and accent color you'd like! If I do an indigo background, most of my colors will now try to work around/compliment the indigo background.
Example: My 6 fanarts show different background colors and how the character colors are affected. Kyle has a more yellow tint to him. Butters gets more turquoise and sea green colors.
Drawing South Park characters is the ultimate test because some of their colors are...hard to make look pleasant (imo) ajsklfhs
I know some don't like coloring or backgrounds. But continously drawing my fav characters helped me practice those things
2022 so far! I've been in the mood to draw them with flowers

Hi! Your art is absolutely wonderful and captivating and the colors are something I live for!! Quick question if you're willing to answer- what program and brush do you use for your paintings? Thank you and I love you and your art!!
Thank you!! Really keeps me motivated to continue sharing 😭💕 I switch between Paint Tool Sai & Drawpile.
Buuuut...Drawpile is what I use for most of my paintings! It's a simple round brush & all I do is adjust the "smudging" setting. I use the color picker tool frequently so it just happens to create the brush stroke effect aha
Trying different color palettes
