Meet the artist page.
Top left: drawing of the artist on a crouched pose wearing a red sweater over a white collared shirt, green cargo pants and black platform boots. They have rounded glasses, and short brown-blonde hair pulled up in a stubby pony. They are very pale, have blue eyes, some acne and a monobrow. They have almond shaped eyes, a narrow face and long nose. Above the drawing it is labeled “Wren (20 yrs)” and below that reads “she/they, Christian, AroAce, AuDHD.” Next to the word Christian there is a cross, next to the word AroAce there is a pin with the aroace flag, next to the word AuDHD there is the infinity butterfly symbol. There are several arrows pointing to the figure reading “Meet the Artist, Literally a bird, perched^tm.”
Top right: box labeled stats and skills. Inside the box there are 5 stat bars. The first is labeled “blood pressure” and is a little under half full. The second is labeled “CHAOS” and is over flowing, colorful and has several glitch effects. The next box is labeled “wonder” and is mostly full. The next is labeled “sense of shame” and is almost empty. The last box is labeled anxiety and is a little less full than the wonder bar.
Bottom: box labeled inventory contains a variety of items. Items include: iPhone in a pink otter box, purple iPad and drawing stylus, teal ear defenders, hand lotion, pincushion labeled “Stabby the Tomato,” several granola bars, pink glittery zipper box with the text “MY PILLS” embroidered on it in white with a pillbox inside, tangle fidget, uno cards, binoculars, a short sword, noise canceling headphones, and a very small stuffed white seal with big eyes labeled “poquito 🤍” riding a much larger fat seal stuffed animal with grey spots wearing a name tag that reads “Gordo.”
according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.
eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??
turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.
sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale lurking around
and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start
Apparently it is impossible for Tumblr users to think of a not ageist way to describe their tastes, because everything must always be compared to how inferior children are -- despite the fact that it is pretty much never the choice of any child or children when media aimed at them is dumbed down etc.
Things when bad: kids and children are involved!
Things when good: this is very Adult this is specifically Adult only Adults can understand or want this
okay we’ve come all the way back around. let’s pack this up. this post is done. “who asked” you just walked into my post that i made on my blog..? who asked YOU?? am i losing my fucking mind?????
The phrase, “target audience,” is nice cause is implies that people outside who the movie was aiming for and catering towards can still enjoy the media, but they aren’t who the artist primarily had in mind when creating it.
A movie that doesn’t have children as its target audience will tackle different ideas and use different storytelling modes as it doesn’t aim to be accessible/relatable/enjoyable to that audience.
Well-made movies with children as a target audience—ones that respect kids ability to understand and appreciate beauty and deep emotion—will often resonate with a larger group than just children. Which makes sense; the ideas are highly accessible and widely relatable since kids have limited life experiences and need clarity.
Movies with older target audiences can afford to be more subtle and specific. They can be more narratively complex, they can be more non-linear, they can slower paced, sadder, scarier, more morally grey. They CAN also be hornier, but they don’t have to be all the time.
There’s no shame in enjoying movies targeted to children, or in wanting to enjoy movies targeted nearer your own age demographic. M
it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed
so true there could be any number of undiscovered species down there all of which are none of my business and never will be. peace and love on (the surface of) planet earth 💕
