Rhone Ma enters dairy farming with Nor Livestock Farm acquisition

21 Feb 2020: Animal health solutions provider, Rhone Ma Holdings Bhd is acquiring non-controlling interests in three companies for RM7.84 million to expand its footprint in the ruminant segment and to participate in the dairy farming business.

Rhone Ma is acquiring a 49% stake in Nor Lazuli Nutrition Sdn Bhd (NLN) for RM1.75 million cash and another 49% stake in Nor Livestock Farm Sdn Bhd (NLF) for RM700,000.

In terms of capital expenditure, Rhone Ma has set aside some RM1.5m for the expansion of a dairy farm, following the acquisition of Nor Livestock Farm.

The group is aiming to have 250 cattle by the end of this year, which would mean two million litres of milk production annually. After that, Rhone Ma hopes to further double milk production to four million litres a year with 500 cattle in the next two years

FGV enters Dairy Farming Business with RedAgri

16 February 2020: FGV Holdings Bhd is venturing into the dairy farm business with the purchase of a majority stake, total 60% in stake in RedAgri Farm Sdn Bhd (which owns the Bright Cow brand of dairy products) for RM10mil.

FGV, which started its life as the commercial arm of Federal Land Development Authority, known across Malaysia as Felda, is better known as one of the world’s biggest plantation companies and crude palm oil producers.

FGV said the acquisition marked its entry into the dairy farming business and fresh milk processing, the first step towards becoming an integrated agrifood company.

RedAgri currently processes 4,000 liters of fresh milk a day, which will be increased to 20,000 liters a day by 2022. Most of this increased production capacity is already committed to industrial and commercial customers, FGV said.

Malaysia imports about RM3.9 billion worth of dairy products annually, as local production amounts for only 67.1 million litres per year or 61% of current domestic demand, according to FGV.

“The remaining 40 million litres are imported. The same scenario also applies to several other key food products, presenting opportunities for organisations such as FGV to benefit from import substitution, while also supporting the government’s vision for shared prosperity,” it said.

Baladna-Felcra partnership to set up the largest dairy farm in Malaysia

10 October 2019: The Malaysian Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra) signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar’s largest dairy producer Baladna Food Industries to set up the largest dairy farm in Malaysia in the next two years.

The partnership will work together on the development of an anchor farm with a 10,000-head capacity. Satellite farms, run by Felcra workers, will also be developed to supply feed meal for the dairy cattle, in a bid to vertically integrate. The two companies aim to produce 50m litres of milk annually by 2021.

The Qatari firm is in the midst of an initial public offering to raise as much as QR1.43 billion. The company has exported to Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan with the first sales outside of Qatar made in April 2019 with the shipment of UHT long-life milk to Afghanistan and Yemen.

F&N buys MSM Perlis Chuping Land for upstream milk business

8 October 2020: Malaysian soft drinks Fraser & Neave Holdings (F&N) announced plans to invest RM 650 million in the first phase of a vertically integrated dairy farm in Chuping, Perlis from MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd.

F&N AgriValley will import 4,000 milking cows in phase one of the project to produce 40 million litres of fresh milk a year. When fully complete, the 4,450 hectares dairy farm will produce 200 million litres of fresh milk from 20,000 milking cows and up to 5,000 head of livestock annually.

Updated 10 Apr 2020: MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd has cancelled the deal to sell agricultural land in Perlis to F&N.

F&N said the RM 156 million deal fell through as its wholly-owned subsidiary, F&N AgriValley Sdn Bhd, did not obtain the required approval from the Economic Affairs Ministry (EPU).

FarmFresh purchases dairy farm & plant in Australia

06 September 2018: The Holstein Milk Company Sdn Bhd, which produces milk under the Farm Fresh brand, has invested RM85 million to acquire a dairy farm and a plant in Melbourne, Australia to meet the demand for fresh milk in Malaysia.

RM 45 million was spent to take over the plant from a dairy company there while RM40 million was used to buy a 607-hectare farm as well as to establish a sperm bank for breeding cattle through artificial insemination.

The company started taking over the plant and the farm in July and is in the stage of renovation and bringing in the necessary machinery for processing fresh milk.  

When works are completed early next year, the plant will be able to produce 27,000 liters of milk daily, which will then be brought into the country to be re-processed at the 12-acre milk processing plant in Muadzam Shah Cattle Research and Innovation Centre (MSCRIC), Rompin.

The production capacity of this plant is 80,000 litres of milk daily, comprising 60,000 litres of Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk and 20,000 litres of fresh milk.

The Holstein Milk Company was expected to control almost 30 per cent of raw milk production in the country compared with 17 per cent to-date. It will also help increase the company’s market share of its product to 43 per cent by the end of this year compared to 39 per cent at present.

To meet the demand for fresh milk in the country, the company is also assisted by about 15 satellite breeders in the state, including from the Panching and Pekan areas. The company also intends to explore new markets in the Philippines next year after successfully entering the fresh milk market in Singapore.
