that’s true in terms of game design, yes - as a device within the narrative, tanetane serves the purpose of showing us our main characters traumas and feelings that we hadn’t known before, but that doesn’t erase what’s happening to the characters themselves in terms of story. 

lucas, duster, and kumatora are all forced to relive fearful moments or feelings throughout the entire experience. (duster sees wess calling him ungrateful and admitting to being the cause for his disability, lucas watches as his own brother and father attack him amidst all his other bottled up feelings of guilt and shame, kumatora is forced to listen to people call her unlovable due to her lack of a ‘proper’ title as princess, etc etc etc)

since these are things that we had not seen plainly in the cast before, that seems to say that these feelings are ones that they don’t want to confront, or try their best to ignore. therefore, in that sense, being forced to confront these trauma-induced feelings firsthand without expecting it or being able to rationalize it, is retraumatization for the characters themselves.
