Ween - The Stallion Pt. 1

Day 35 - The stallion Pt. 1

I know I said yesterday that I was taking a break but I really felt like getting one of these out so i’m probably just gonna do them as and when from now on. I know that goes against the whole “daily” boognish idea but hey, the world keeps turning. Aaaaaaanyway, today we’re talking about one of the greatest weapons in Ween’s arsenal, the beginning of the mammoth stallion 5 parter. The first part of the stallion is a crude, nightmarish song that once again fit’s perfectly in with the rest of the pod. With the twisted guitar parts playing as a nice sound bed for Gener’s deranged vocals (I’m the fucking stallion man, the stallion, the fucking stallion man), this song really set’s itself up with a nice hellish vibe that is the first of it’s kind in the discography so far.

Ween - Sorry Charlie

Day 34 - Sorry charlie

Once again, major apologies for the massive delay in posts but Uni has been so fucking busy as of late you have no idea. Anyway, here we are back at the Pod with the next song predicting the gruesome twosome, sorry charlie. The song takes a slightly different to a lot of the songs on the Pod so far by having a very clean guitar part with what has become the album standard fuzzed out vocals. A slow moving song that acts as a nice break in the album after 2 fairly heavy hitters, Sorry charlie adds a nice immediate level of variation to what will eventially become a twisted nightmare of an album. It’s good to be back anyway, and hopefully tomorrow I will go back to last week in terms of posting frequency.

Sorry for the extreme lack of posting in the last week or so, been a hectic week at uni and whatnot so gonna catch up on it a little later tonight. Might do 2 a day for a little while but honestly not sure. onwards and upwards though eh?

Ween - Frank

Day 33 - Frank

The pod continues to create a vibe unlike any other Ween album with Frank, a sludgy, crawling number which introduces the Ween tradition of the pork roll egg and cheese which is ingrained in the whole album. Like so many other songs on the album, Frank continues the trend of vocals that are as brown as they come with some fuzzed out effects, this time layered over what I believe to be some of Deaners greatest guitar works with a riff that doesn’t feel disimilar to drowning in a swamp. So far this is my favourite song from the Pod, especially towards the end of the song when the different layers of guitars build up over the crazy drum pattern. Also, it may just be me but I love how this song and the next unintentionally predicited the greatest duo in tv history.

Ween - Dr. Rock

Day 32 - Dr. Rock

If the first song on the pod established the tone of the album, then Dr. Rock supports it in the best way possible. Pulsing with fuzzed out vocals and equally brown guitars, Dr. Rock is a fast paced song that goes to show the writing talents of the Ween brothers through it’s stellar lyrics paired with deaner screaming “Dr. Rock!” at the end of every verse line, something that really sets this album instantly apart from Godweensatan. Not that GWS wasn’t full of great songs ofcourse, but right out of the gate The Pod really presents itself as a ween album, focusing less on the genre parody style of the previous album and focusing more on songs that can only be described as “ween”.

Ween - Strap On That Jammypac

Day 31 - Strap on that Jammypac

I can’t believe I’m actually saying this but here we are on the first song of Ween’s second album, the Pod. Strap on that Jammypac is the perfect example of Ween’s excellent album opening tracks which in almost every instance serve a different purpose. In the case of the Pod, the opening track perfectly represents the album ahead, a slow, sludgy ride that is almost the polar opposite of GWS. As a song by itself it doesn’t hold up spectacularly but given how excited it gets me for the rest of the album I can’t help but feel a huge amount of affection for it. As an album, the Pod took a long LONG time to grow on me but for some reason lately it’s been pretty much the only album I’ve been listening to. With that in mind, the next month or so is gonna be pretty interesting.

Day 30 - Godweensatan

I’ve decided that the best way to end an album on the daily boognish would be to rank the album as a whole the same way I would any other song. In that regard, I have to say that GWS is probably one of my least favourite Ween albums but only due to the fact that it favours the genre parody style of songwriting for the most part as opposed to later albums which took on a much more serious tone. But that’s not what GWS is about, GWS is about creating a chaotic and unrestrained beast of an album that takes no prisoners, and that is exactly what it does. I also want to make a list of my top 5 tracks on each album, not in any particular order just as a way for me to understand what style of Ween I appreciate the most. With that in mind, my top 5 for this album are:

1. Birthday boy

2.Bumblebee part’s 1 and 2

3.Don’t laugh I love you

4.Up on the hill

5.Papa Zit

Overall - A solid album that set the groundwork for Ween’s later albums, but unfortunately doesn’t quite reach me in the same way. 65/100

Ween - Puffy Cloud

Day 29 - Puffy cloud

It felt like we’d never get there but here we are, the last song on Ween’s first full length album. Puffy cloud is simply a superb choice for a closing track, a slow spaced out acoustic track about the aftermath of a pot binge that is a perfect thematic match for the end of the album. The song is about a comedown and that’s exactly what it is, a slow comedown from 28 tracks of varying speeds, styles, tones and levels of insanity. As a song by itself it definitely holds up when compared to some of the other tracks on the album but it’s definitely elevated by it’s placement. Instead of slowly fading out or reaching a musical climax, in perfect ween fashion, puffy cloud ends the album on a bum note, something that perfectly represents the start of what would be a roller coaster of a career.

Ween - Marble Tulip Juicy Tree

Day 28 - Marble Tulip Juicy Tree

Been pretty inactive the last few days for a few reasons so gonna blast out the rest of the album now to catch up, starting with marble tulip juicy tree. The first thing I noticed when listening to this song was the fact that it had an incredibly similar vibe to the song love is love by lungfish. It’s somewhat of an oddity on GWS as it has a very high production value compared to songs like you fucked up and it really stands out. There are a lot of layers to the sound which really help to fill it out especially considering the recording method of the album. Along with some pretty interesting guitar work and an overall psychadelic kind of tone, marble tulip juicy tree is an excellent penultimate track for the album.

Ween - Squelch The Weasel

Day 27 - Squelch the Weasel

This probably isn’t going to be super long so figured I’d use today’s slot to to explain that yeah, now I’m back at uni it’s more likely going to be every other day that I do this but nothing’s really certain as of yet. On the song itself, Squelch the Weasel is a pretty restrained folk styled song that definitely stands in line with the other genre parodies on the album, albeit taking a much more inspired approach. Whilst I’m not a huge fan of the song itself as I’m not a massive folk guy, I can appreciate the sonic attributes such as Gener’s great vocals and the killer guitar part towards the end of the track. I feel like maybe the song would feel possibly more fitting towards the start of the album given how much it seems to halt the flow but who am I to imply what the brothers Ween wanted to do.

Ween - Blackjack

Day 26 - Blackjack

Towards the end of this album it becomes very clear that Ween are starting to transition to their fuzzed out, warped style that they would take up on the pod, Blackjack being one of the more obvious examples of this. Starting with a simple drum machine beat that drags it’s way through the whole song, it isn’t long before it’s joined by some incredibly strange lyrics from Gener and a downright warped bass line that goes hand in hand with the fucked up style of the song. One of the first true “brown” songs in Ween’s discography, Blackjack is somewhat of an oddity on GWS that manages to carve out a spot for itself among the better tracks on the album.

Ween - Birthday Boy

Day 25 - Birthday Boy

I think it’s fair to say that I’ve found a new favourite song from this album. I’d never really listened to Birthday Boy before but when giving the whole album another look for the daily boognish I realised just how outstanding this song is. Structurally and tonally not dissimilar to something that Mac Demarco would come to write, albeit with a pretty warped and distorted guitar tone. I only compare the 2 as it makes me seem slightly more credible than if I were to just gush over how amazing the song is. I’m really into this style of chord progression so I’m already pretty enamored with Birthday Boy but the layers of effects over the whole thing elevate it for me in a way that I can’t understand.

Ween - Old Man Thunder

Day 24 - Old Man Thunder

I was gonna skip tonight for various reasons but when I saw what today’s song was I figured I may as well get it over with. Old Man thunder is essentially a 20 second studio outtake, including laughter, that serves as a sort of transition track on GWS. Now whilst I can appreciate that this is a very Ween thing to do and it makes perfect sense, as far as songs go, it’s barely one. If I were marking this on context it would probably be a little higher but considering the fact that I’ve never gone out of my way to listen to it and I only ever do when I end up leaving the album playing after hippy smell I’m gonna have to be pretty harsh and say I can’t really grade it. There’s just not enough for me to judge it against what are essentially actual songs. So welcome to my first, and hopefully last, N/A score on the daily boognish.

Ween - Hippy Smell

Day 23 - Hippy Smell

Once again, Hippy smell was another addition to the special edition of GWS and personally, I think it was worth adding. It adds some nice acoustic guitar to the album and overall has a completely different vibe to the rest of the songs. I think it’s a nice precursor to something like Chocolate and Cheese in the songwriting and style which is something the album does so well, perfectly showing the routes to the later additions to Ween’s discography. The middle section loses me a little as it loses the 2 layers of guitars playing with eachother which is the main reason I like song, although it’s at least cohesive with the rest of the track. It’s a nice sounding track that add’s a niec layer of variety and ends on a super Ween-esque “solo”.

Ween - Papa Zit

Day 22 - Papa Zit

I missed a night cause I was a little drunk but looking back that may have helped when talking about this song. Papa zit is another fast paced, high energy songs from godweensatan but is easily one of my favourites on the whole album. It’s mostly helped by the simply outstanding guitar work from deaner on both the main riff and the solo/bridge section. It also has the distinction of being the first song on the album that I ever REALLY listened to, as in kept going back to it before I’d really started listening to the album. It’s another really nice time capsule of the album if you will, containing all of the typical elements of the album in one song. Whilst I may prefer some of the less GWS songs from the album, this is the best truly GWS styled song to me.

Ween - L.M.L.Y.P.

Day 21 - L.M.L.Y.P

We finally made it guy’s, we finally made it to the most popular song on the album. The song which when played lied reaches an astounding 39 minutes. The song that’s...OK I guess. I kid of course, but I really don’t like Let me lick your pussy as much as most do. Maybe because I’m not a huge prince fan but I just find it quite difficult to listen to a nearly 9 minute song that has as little variation as this song does. On the other hand, the song itself is fucking sexy. It oozes funk and is exactly the kind of variation I need from a Ween album. I may not listen to it as much as some other songs on the album but the smooth bass along with Gener’s down right seductive vocals always gets me feeling funky fresh and ready to move.

Overall - 70
