I'm alive

Hello! 

This is your blogger with an important message: I have not fallen off the face of the planet. University just keeps me devastatingly busy. However, I am still kind. I volunteer, I remain a resource for friends in distress, I smile at people on the street. It's just hard to find time to document everything. I'm hoping that next semester, when I have better handle on university life, this can be part of my quotidian again. I really miss blogging. 

That said, I'm learning a lot about kindness here. Kindness comes in more shades than I originally anticipated, so stay tuned for some observations therein.

Hello everyone! 

This post is a long time coming. As you may have noticed, dailyactsofkindness has become less daily. I am busier now than I ever have been before, and while I still make time for kindness, I barely have time to breathe, let alone archive my life on this blog. So I apologize. 

Consider this confirmation of what you must already suspect: I will be less active than I have been previously. Hopefully this is a habit I can reconquer once my life settles down. Until then, rest assured that I am still being kind- I'm just not documenting it as much. I entreat your magnanimity and thank you for your patience.

The Past Three Days

I must again offer my sincerest apologies. University life has drained me more than I thought it would. However, I can safely report that I have be kind to all in my path, have gone out of my way to help friends, and have smiled to the unsmiling masses.

Day Fifty Five

Today I helped a friend move a bicycle. Simple and quick and kind of fun. Look out for opportunities to be kind! Stay compassionate!

Today I gave money to a young street performer trying to finance a college education. He was very, very young, and very, very talented. I was so happy to do it! I highly recommend giving anything you have to the worthy causes you encounter.

Days Fifty Three and Fifty Four

Apologies, apologies. You may have gathered that I just started university, which means that I'm exhausted and busy all the time.

Yesterday my service was organizing a church library and packaging meals for the terminally ill.

Today my service was smiling at the people in my new town. Where I come from, when you pass someone on the street, you smile and give some variety of salutation. Here, this is not the case. Maybe they're happier this way, but I'm going to try to brighten their days with a little human contact. 

Again, my apologies. Life has never been so crazy.

Watching this disgusted me. This video evidences the virulence of the sickest hatred. This is the opposite of kindness. Kindness is open, unconditional, and beautiful. I wanted this on my blog as a reminder to all of us to overcome our prejudices, to understand how ugly they make us. Please, please, please be kind. Be understanding. Love to your fullest capacity. We are all better than this kind of hate.

Day Fifty Two

Today I spent time in an assisted living community with the residents and sorting books for book donations! In other words, it was a wonderful day of volunteering. I love knowing that I am making an impact in my new community. It's opening my eyes to all the volunteer opportunities I'm going to have whilst here, and it's definitely inspiring. 

Challenge: find a new way to stay dedicated to service. Remember why you do what you do.

Day Fifty One

Today, alongside forty nine of my peers, I helped package eight thousand pounds of donated food! It was crazy. It took us two hours in a sweaty warehouse but we did it. I highly recommend visiting your local food bank for a few hours- the programs are already established. You literally have to show up. Do it! Stay kind!
