cool fish #22.5: this guy
White-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus)
Is this White-throated Dipper dialed in or dilly dallying?
Dialed in
Dilly dallying
cool fish #22
fun fact: not technically a fish :)
sorry fishers ive fallen behind. gonna catch up here soon (like fish catching up on the tide) and there will be a. multiple-a-day-cool-fish for a little bit, probably
The wolf eel (cool fish #21) has a face like a grandma and that only a grandma could love! They are not true eels, as they have paired gill slits and pectoral fins. They can get up to 8 feet long! This is bill, his life partner debra isn't pictured (they're monogamous and partner for life)
video from: California Academy of Sciences
these old men (australian lungfish, cool fish #20) are considered living fossils, given that their lineage goes back 380 MILLION years! that's a lot of lettuce in dog toys !
Are these Globefish dialed in or dilly dallying?
Dialed in
Dilly dallying

globe fish (or slender-spined porcupine fish, cousins to pufferfish so this is cool fish #19.2) are by definition dilly dallying: they suck at swimming so bad they tend to just hide and wait for someone to come up so they can stab em
well? can you?
see if you can find cool fish #19, the star puffer! they can swim as fast as threeeeee miles per hour! that's faster than a human baby slowly crawling! they have beaks that let them crush and eat crustaceans and molluscs. watch out if you have a spine!
this diva (cool fish #18) is a flamboyant cuttlefish! that's her real name!
fun fact: she can change clothes (colors) to make a statement and to blend into the crowd. also she's poisonous!
cool fish #17: tasselled wobbegong
fun fact: this is the most specialized member of the family, and the only member of the genus. he mostly sleeps all day and waits for food to roll up to his mouth. they can apparently attack humans, though an attack hasn't been reported since 1940! he's so flat look at him
cool fish #16: harlequin tuskfish
fun fact: they are anti-equatorial, found from Japan to Australia! look at him teefs!
cool fish #15: painted frogfish
fun fact: they can change color!! they are ambush predators and solitary. also this guy got into the orange hi vis paint jar
cool fish #14: sacambambapsis!
fun fact: this fish freaks me the fuck out! I'm typing this at 1am and looking at pictures of this fish fills me with a deep existential horror beyond my comprehension!
also this fish is extinct, and recreations are based on fossils that were found near bolivia
cool fish #13: blobfish!
fun fact! their jelly like skin weighs them down and they need the high water and fat content to survive. they don't have a swim bladder because they would explode! they look like they do on land because of the pressure difference. they mostly eat things that pass by, bc they can't really move too well.
cool fish #12; alligator gar
fun fact: they arent alligators! they are one of the largest fish in north america! they have ganoid scales which are bone-like and diamond shaped. they're mostly found in the central/southern USA, from Illinois south along the Mississippi river. they have teefies!
