STRAIGHT TALKER

The Leslie I knew had quite a gift for languages. Leslie's Cantonese, English, and Mandarin were all very good. Although he had lived in Taiwan for a short while, I never expected his Mandarin to be so fluent. He also tended to keep his abilities hidden. Once, a group of Taiwanese journalists came to Hong Kong wanting to meet Leslie. My Mandarin is very limited, but knowing that someone from PolyGram Taiwan would accompany them, I breathed a sigh ofrelief because he could translate for me. Unfortunately, by the time of the dinner, I found out this fellow had gone on a shopping spree and wasn't coming to the meal. Facing these six or seven Taiwanese people speaking perfect Mandarin, I was completely speechless (and I feel weird when I can’t talk!). As I began to panic, Leslie arrived. When he sat down, I realised my saviour was here. It turned out Leslie's Mandarin was perfect, and he kept joking with me in Mandarin, leaving me caught between laughter and tears!

Among the few superstar artists, Leslie was also one of the most fluent in English. When traveling with him to Southeast Asia for performances or promotions, he helped us immensely in terms of language. Having him around almost felt like he was the one taking care of us instead. But perhaps because his language skills were so good, he sometimes made promises a bit too easily. Once, when a group of journalists asked him when he would hold a concert,Leslie said in fluent Mandarin, "Next time I hold a concert, I'll invite you all!" Later, this group of journalists actually came to the label asking for concert tickets, airfare, and hotel expenses, causing us no end of trouble. We couldn't back out, ended up spending quite a bit of extra money, and had to hurriedly arrange their itinerary to Hong Kong. Leslie also promised to personally sign posters foreach newspaper. All of us had to work frantically to deal with the consequences of those few "quick words."

BLURTED-OUT QUIPS

Because of his language talent, it wasn't surprising that we ended up with extra work (of course, as a team that stood together through thick and thin, we didn't really mind). But sometimes, even extra work couldn't fix things. One instance was during the 1988 concert. I was responsible for the script for that concert. It was common for performers to forget parts of the script or improvise when they got caught up in the moment, but with Leslie, it was more worrying than you’d expect because he had a tendency to speak everything on his mind!

During one part of the concert that night, he rose from an opium bed, reenacting a scene from Rouge. The original script was about the dangers of smoking. But Leslie suddenly started improvising, pointing at the opium pipe in his hand and saying to the audience of over ten thousand people: "None of you should try this. Only Sun Ma Tsai (note: Sun Ma Tsai was a very famous Cantonese opera veteran in Hong Kong, now deceased, who had smoked opium) can handle it!" I almost fell off the producer's platform along with Johnnie Yeung (the concert producer). That was barely the start! Leslie added another line: "Fleur, Fleur isn't here tonight. I told her not to go eat Japanese food at that place. ‘It's too dodgy. You might get slapped!'" (Note: During that period, Anita Mui had offended some triad members for some reason and had been inexplicably slapped while eating at a certain place.) I almost fell off the platform again with Johnnie Yeung. Both of us nearly had a heart attack! Leslie didn't mean any harm, these blurted-out quips often gave petty people around him ammunition to make malicious criticisms. Deep down, I found this straightforward nature of his an endearing quality. If you understood him, there was no problem. But if someone wanted to cause trouble, there was always an opportunity.

I'm sure everyone remembers how he once said he would retire after earning ten million dollars. Later, many people used that statement to challenge Leslie. If you've read all this, I'm sure you can also understand that this was simply another result of his quick words or random thoughts. But I do feel somewhat indignant about it. People aren't so fixated on other singers, only Leslie. Many always seemed eager to catch him in a misstep.

[TRANSLATION] "SUITS & TILES: TAIWAN LUXURY" - Excerpt from "Will You Remember"

Leslie looked at me with a smile and said, “Yeah, busy. My friends have all stopped playing and are waiting for me to go back to finish the mahjong tournament. Lots to do!”

You might think that Leslie had a large circle of friends around him who often wore luxury brands, used luxury brands, and drank luxury brands, so that’s how he knew so much about them. But this assumption is absolutely wrong. In his leisure time, Leslie was rarely around more than four or five friends, and in his work life, it was also no more than four or five people. So all in all, Leslie’s world revolved around only about ten people. On the workfront, it was usually just one or two directors, me, and his manager Florence Chan (who was practically inseparable from him). As for his everyday friends, believe it or not, nine out of ten were his mahjong buddies.

Leslie spent all his free time playing mahjong, with Taiwanese mahjong being his favourite. Occasionally, he’d also join a game of Big Two. To be honest, I was a bit intimidated by his mahjong circle because they could play for dozens of rounds, day and night. What’s more, every now and then, they’d hold a mahjong tournament with a decent cash prize. Whenever the tournament came around,we had to adjust any work arrangements we had for him; otherwise, it would just cause trouble for ourselves.

Once, during a Jade Solid Gold awards ceremony that happened to coincide with the mahjong tournament, my colleague told me Leslie would arrive at the very last moment and leave immediately after. I happened to be in TVB’s makeup room at the time, so I went over to greet him and said sympathetically, “Busy, huh? Glad you could make it to accept the award.” Leslie looked at me with a smile and said, “Yeah, busy. My friends have all stopped playing and are waiting for me to go back to finish the mahjong tournament. Lots to do!” Honestly, he could be so exasperating. In the end, Leslie said his goodbyes right after accepting the award, and a TVB director even chased after him, saying, “Busy, huh? Glad you could make it to accept the award.” Leslie just replied repeatedly, “Yeah, yeah, incredibly busy!”

SLEEPLESS NIGHT RESTLESS HEART

The rest of the crew worked under immense psychological pressure to produce Summer Romance (Leslie never had an album called Sleepless Night Restless Heart!). Everyone was fully aware that "this was a battle we absolutely could not lose." I decided to approach Kwok Siu-Lam to compose the song was mine, because the first phase of promoting Summer Romance was tied to the Tokyo Music Festival, and the competition required that the entry song be an original piece. He had many excellent works that fit Leslie’s style of performing.

The producer responsible for this track (which didn’t even have a title until very late in the process) was Patrick Yeung. He’s a very cool, quiet, and experienced producer, and of course, he was also one of the key figures carrying the heavy burden. However, because he was so silent, I wasn’t sure if he was stressed at all! He also began wearing sunglasses to every production meeting for Leslie’s albums. He probably didn’t want others to see how worried he was... making albums is really tough!

After the meeting, we decided to invite Lam Man Chung to write the lyrics. Patrick had been hesitant during the meeting, and neither Leslie nor I understood why. Later, we realized he was notoriously difficult to pin down in the entertainment circle. The Tokyo Music Festival sent repeated ultimatums, and we almost lost our chance to compete. Finally, we managed to track him down. He only faxed us three sections of lyrics and one additional note: "You come up with the title!" 

In the end, Leslie casually said, "Let’s call it Sleepless Night Restless Heart!" I thought it was very fitting because this song kept everyone restless and sleepless. Thank God Sleepless Night Restless Heart became one of Leslie’s most popular songs and laid a solid foundation for our collaboration!

PRO SINGER

Since Sleepless Night Restless Heart received an overwhelmingly positive response from the very start of its promotion, and because we absolutely had to release the album before the summer (since missing the prime summer slot would affect album sales), everything was done at lightning speed to complete the album Summer Romance. Patrick and I racked our brains and realized that Leslie’s recording schedule was extremely tight. We tried every possible solution but couldn’t figure it out. Later, we explained the situation to Leslie, and he said with a smile, "Actually, I’ll need to cut two more days from my recording time!"

He wasn’t even joking! At the time, Leslie was also filming A Chinese Ghost Story, with Tsui Hark demanding his presence on set every day. Patrick and I were deeply worried that the album wouldn’t be finished on time. Unexpectedly, on the night of the recording session, Leslie walked in completely composed and asked, "Are all the backing tracks for the songs recorded?" Patrick replied that one song, Together, was still missing, but the recording schedule… Before he could finish, Leslie recorded nearly five songs in just four to five hours. He walked out of the recording studio with a big smile and said, "I’ll finish Together tomorrow, and then I’ll wrap up the rest the day after." I was surprised to find that Leslie had indeed saved a significant amount on production costs!

Typically, a singer would need twenty to thirty hours just for vocals to record an album. He did it in just over ten hours, and the results were excellent. This might explain why Leslie’s vocals on his later albums felt so smooth and natural. It was simple, really: he often recorded in one take. Another thing you should know about his recording process: whenever Leslie sang something that didn’t meet his standards, he would restart from the beginning, completing the song in one seamless flow, unlike many others who patch lines together bit by bit. Listening to him record a new song in the studio was truly a pleasure. Who says being a singer doesn’t have its easy moments?

[TRANSLATION] "Fashion Expert" - Excerpt from "Will You Remember"

LESLIE pays great attention to his attire on every album cover he releases. He has a particular quirk: he doesn’t need, and even opposes, having anyone design his stage outfits or cover shoot clothes. At the same time, he strongly dislikes having a makeup artist do his makeup. Whenever he goes abroad for performances, he carries a large case of cosmetics all by himself, and backstage, he often reminds other singers which foundation to avoid. I often joke that he must have been a woman in a past life.

Speaking of album covers, some of you might remember or like the Virgin Snow cover. Thinking about it brings back a story. Outside hotels in the U.S. and Canada, there are doormen wearing hats similar to the one on that cover. That just goes to show he’s a true superstar. When Leslie wears a hat, no one would ever imagine it’s the same as what a hotel doorman wears.

Another time, Leslie had just returned to Hong Kong from Paris, wearing a dark green woolly jacket. Backstage (during group shows, singers often chatted about clothes, probably because they had little else to talk about), everyone asked Leslie where he bought this stylish jacket. Someone, trying to sound smart, said, “Leslie just got back from Europe, of course it’s a European brand!” Leslie just smiled and didn’t answer. Later, during a casual conversation, Leslie said, “I did buy it in Paris, but from a street stall. It cost 400 Hong Kong dollars!” Everyone burst out laughing.

Speaking of brands, Leslie is also a fan of luxury brands, but he doesn’t necessarily wear head-to-toe designer labels because he feels that would be too extravagant and wasteful. In fact, Leslie is very mindful with his money. And apart from his basic expenses, people often fight to pay for his food and travel! Sometimes I feel that my daily expenses might even be higher than his. Yet, he knows all about luxury brands, be it from clothing to furniture, from cars to yachts. I’ve never understood where he picks up all this knowledge. What’s even more surprising is that, despite rarely drinking, he knows more about wine than I do (and I’m someone who really enjoys fine wine). And he talks about it so convincingly, like he really knows his stuff!

HONG KONG NEWS RECAP: NOV 26TH TAI PO WANG FUK COURT FIRE

What happened?

On November 26th, 2025, at around 2:50pm HKT, a fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court (宏福苑) apartment complex in Tai Po district

Although firefighters arrived in 10 minutes, the fire quickly spread and escalated to 7 of the 8 blocks in the complex. At 6:22pm the same day, the No. 5 alarm (the highest level) was raised (HKFP)

The fire was so severe that first responders were unable to enter the building to conduct search and rescue while keeping their lives intact

The fire was declared contained at 9:31pm on Nov 27th, and declared under control at 3:15am on Nov 28th (HKFP)

Only at 10:18am on Nov 28th, after 43 hours of firefighting, did the fire get mostly put out

As of Nov 28th, at least 128 people have been confirmed dead (HKFP), including 1 firefighter and 2 Indonesian domestic workers

At least 79 people were injured (including 11 in critical condition) and 200+ people are still currently missing (HKFP); thousands of residents are left displaced

How did this happen?

The apartment complex was undergoing a HK$330M renovation project (that's US$38.5M) by Prestige Construction & Engineering Co. Ltd. (宏業建築工程) when the fire happened; the project has been ongoing since July 2024

The direct cause of the fire itself is currently unknown and under investigation

HOWEVER: The fire was not an accident; it was caused by systemic failure, negligence, and corruption, and was entirely preventable

It begins with Prestige Construction & Engineering itself: since 2022, the company has had over 10 records of safety violations (The Collective: Chinese)

In July 2024, the residents voted out the old management committee and discovered that the chosen renovation plan was the most expensive of 3 options (IG)

The invoices were filled with "miscellaneous" charges with zero transparency (IG)

Renovation work hadn't even started yet, but the corporate greed was already beginning to show itself and alarm bells were already ringing

It only got worse from there

Over the course of renovation work:

Workers were caught smoking while working on the bamboo scaffolding (IG footage); no action was taken despite repeated reports [NOTE: We are not blaming the one construction worker, only pointing this out as a symptom left unaddressed]

Non-fireproof mesh netting was used (HKFP), instead of fire-resistant netting legally required for construction projects, due to cost-cutting: legally-compliant fireproof netting is almost twice as expensive than the cheap stuff (IG)

Styrofoam window sealant was used: while this is common practice in Hong Kong to prevent damages, the fact that styrofoam is flammable heavily contributed to the fire spreading

The fire alarm system was also shut down, allegedly because the workers were using emergency exits for convenience (Wikipedia via AM730: Chinese) (IG report) (IG footage)

Despite the residents' complaints, inspections, and even government warnings, no action was taken (Bloomberg via IG)

What about the bamboo scaffolding?

Certain Western media outlets, including BBC, CNN, The Guardian, The Independent, Reuters, Channel 4, ITV, and Sky News, have been blaming the bamboo scaffolding used in construction work in general, and even the government has been speeding up their plans to replace it with metal (IG)

THIS IS MISINFORMATION AND ORIENTALIST NONSENSE.

Bamboo is naturally fire-resistant and scaffolding made from it has been in use in Hong Kong for over a century with no major issues

Even after the fire, photo evidence shows that the bamboo scaffolding used in the project remains intact, albeit scorched externally

The government is only pushing this narrative to further align themselves with Mainland Chinese construction policy (Tumblr)

Bamboo scaffolding is not to blame. Corruption, systemic failure, corporate greed, and safety oversights are.

Currently, at least 11 people have been arrested on suspected corruption charges and manslaughter (HKFP), but there remains a lack of accountability on the government's negligence so far

Donate to Crossroads Foundation Hong Kong (a local grassroots NGO): they are also buying and distributing essential items for displaced residents

Donate to Feeding Hong Kong: they are accepting both financial donations and food donations of shelf-stable items

Donate to Hong Kong Saving Cat and Dog Association (HKSCDA): they are offering free medical care to pets injured by the fire and are currently accepting donations (note: website is in Chinese)

Donate to Po Leung Kuk: they are Hong Kong's leading social service organization and fundraiser and are regarded as trustworthy by locals

Although the government and Hong Kong Red Cross have both set up relief funds, some locals regard them to be untrustworthy due to a lack of transparency

Donate to independent fundraisers by 港 Canto Club Community Initiative (IG, closing Dec 1st 6pm UK time) and others

On Instagram, Analixir and Kyli3e3 are offering art commissions in exchange for evidence of donations

MFMW supports migrant domestic workers in distress while Yan Chai is a charitable hospital that doesn't take any admin fees for donations, meaning 100% of your money will go to supporting those in need.

Hello friends — as you may have seen on the news, Hong Kong just had its worst fire in at least 60 years with 128 confirmed dead and over 200 still missing. If you are overseas and would like to help, here are some ways you can do so:

1. Spread correct information about bamboo scaffolding and the cause of the fire

There is no evidence that the bamboo scaffolding exacerbated the fire. In fact, it is far more likely that the cost-cutting of the contractor led to this tragedy as they used low-cost mesh instead of the industry-standard non-flammable mesh, which caused the fire to spread upwards quickly. Bamboo is very difficult to light on fire and has been used as scaffolding in Hong Kong for many years. It is part of our culture and a stronghold of local heritage. It is one of the few industries where the Mainland has been unable to take over because they use metal scaffolds. There has been a huge spread of disinformation even among reputable international media that the bamboo was a leading cause of the fire. In fact, this is misleading and only helps the government’s agenda to phase out bamboo scaffolding in favour of metal scaffolding, which they are already doing. Biases against bamboo scaffolding are often rooted in misunderstanding and xenophobia. It would be extremely helpful to correct those who are spreading this misinformation. Please help stop the state from turning this tragedy into a way to promote their political agenda. Instead, please bring focus to the falsity of their statements and hold the real culprits accountable. It is cost-cutting and negligence on the contractor and government’s part that led to this disaster.

2. Check in on your HKer friends

Many HKers are shaken by the incident and may be struggling with their emotions/mental health as a result. Please offer them a listening ear and let them know you are here to support them.

Looking for watermelons? Filming "Ashes of Time": A Story

The filming of "Ashes of Time" took place in Yulin, Shaanxi. The place they stayed in was very close to the Mu Us Desert, and was near no trace of civilisation, making it terribly inconvenient to go anywhere.

Once, Leslie heard that watermelons taste better after expanding and contracting with temperature changes when buried in sand. To spice things up, the bored Gor-gor led the rest of the cast on a quest to bury watermelons in the desert sand.

But because deserts are ever-moving, these watermelons were lost as quickly as they were buried.

Seeing the hilarious image of A-Listers running around burying and digging up watermelons brought the crew a lot of laughs.
