In an effort to share a little black and queer history during this turbulent Pride month, here’s a comic about one of my favorite musicians, Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
https://www.everythingisgoingtobeokcomic.com/sister-rosetta-tharpe/
I almost included this tidbit, but then I got lazy bc I didn’t want to draw a bus, but now I kinda wish I had.
Your opinion: Do you think Choromatsu is trying to be someone he’s not? Like trying to be responsible and think he’s the smartest most mature and when really not? He’s just as immature as his brothers?
I think the thing with Choro is he's ALREADY pretty smart and responsible. The joke is that he tries way too hard on top of that. He puts on some big round glasses and walks around like the most uppity little nerd ever and that's what's funny, because he'll trip two seconds later and a bunch of adult magazines will spill out of his pockets. The thing with Choro is that he's too hard on himself.
He tries to maintain a bit of a "purist" atmosphere, I think? He pretends he's the perfect student, that he's not interested in getting into a relationship, he tries to keep his otaku interests under wraps because, I think, to do otherwise would be considered vulgar in his eyes. He has this intense idea of what he should be like at his age - a completely perfect and well put-together person. The thing is, none of these things are bad or vulgar. It's okay to want a relationship, it's okay to indulge yourself in your interests and literally no one is a perfect student. What does that even look like anyway?
There are loads of times where Choro has been an extremely attentive and mature person, just off his own back.
There is no faking anything here at all, he has an extremely good sense of his and other people's feelings. Choro's character is smushed together with the fact he's the token tsukkomi of the show. Tsukkomi are supposed to be the ones who are the most normal, and it clashes with the fact that the show is ABOUT stupid NEETs, so that's where the comedy comes from.
I don't believe Choro's trying to be someone he's NOT... because he's trying to be a "good person". He's already a good person, it's just that HIS view of what a good person should be at his age is a little intense at times. The working, married folks they see on the streets are no more perfect than they are, it's just the idolisation of a life they don't have. Choro is the part of all of us that worries we're running out of time, that we should always be doing something constructive that will propel us forward in life, but really, there's no right way to live. He needs to be kinder to himself and let himself be happy. Your life can start again at any moment.
