Of course, he had enough faith in Daichi to know that whatever it was could not be ill in nature.
But part of him whispered, 'He hates this new life you have imprisoned him in.'
Daichi had agreed readily enough to returning to their kingdom, standing by Koushi when he had been reinstated as a prince and busying himself as Koushi was quickly swallowed up by matters of the court.
Koushi knew that Daichi would follow him to the ends of the earth if he asked.
What Koushi didn't know was whether Daichi was happy with him.
He was no longer Koushi's bodyguard, although nothing would ever get rid of Daichi's protective tendencies.
It was difficult to find a place for himself here, three years after leaving this kingdom. Koushi had not wanted to pressure him and so, he had told Daichi that a break would do him some good.
Clearly, that had not meant anything to the former bodyguard.
Daichi was everywhere all the time.
If he wasn't being roped into helping the instructors with training the next crop of warriors, he was strategizing with the Sugawaras' advisors.
When he wasn't working with the protection unit, he was talking out policies with Koushi.
Was he restless? Did he feel like he did not belong?
He had been avoiding Koushi.
At first, Koushi had thought that Daichi had been busy or tired.
But it had become unmistakable after the first couple of days.
Beyond feeling hurt, Koushi was afraid.
The last thing he wanted was to lose Daichi again.
So he followed his lover.
Early that morning, before dawn's light had even touched their chamber, Daichi was out of bed.
Koushi waited for a moment and then followed, keeping his footsteps light and plastering himself to the walls.
The last time he had woken without Daichi, all he had was a yellow blossom tucked into the pages of his favourite book as a clue that Daichi had not left him completely.
That Daichi still cared for him.
Koushi was not waiting to stumble upon any flowers in books by accident.
So he tracked his lover all the way down until Daichi disappeared into another corridor.
Heart beating wildly, nerves dancing and alight, Koushi tried to tell himself he was being silly.
Paranoid.
Royalty tended to be.
Koushi had never been but three years without Daichi had done some things to him.
He knew that it had done a number on Daichi as well. He could see it in Daichi's eyes sometimes.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, he sprang round the corner and hoped it would be enough to catch Daichi in the act of whatever it was.
Daichi looked up, startled and with cream on his nose.
"Koushi!"
"Daichi?"
Koushi stared.
Daichi was wearing an apron, likely borrowed based on how ill-fitting it was. And he was bent over a cake.
"I thought-" Koushi was so embarrassed he had no other recourse than to be honest, "I knew you were hiding something from me and I got worried so I-"
Daichi's brown eyes were soft as he put down the bag of cream and approached Koushi.
Pulling him into a gentle hug that immediately dispelled all the anxiety, Daichi murmured, "Of course, I apologise, I did not mean to worry you. I should have considered that."
"No," Koushi shook his head, "I should not have jumped to conclusions, I just... Wanted to know if you were happy."
Daichi leaned back to give him a puzzled look, "I get to spend my days with you. How could I not be happy?"
Koushi shrugged, a habit his sister, the queen, had long tried to break.
"I want you to feel like you belong here."
Daichi smiled, "I belong with you. Anywhere you are, I belong too. Besides, I have multiple job offers and I intend to select one."
Koushi felt a weight lift off from his chest as he gripped Daichi's hand, "Wonderful, that's wonderful. But if there is ever anything you lack, you must speak to me, please."
Daichi pressed a gentle kiss to Koushi's brow, "Always. Now let me gift this to you since you are here."
He swiftly finished whatever he had been doing before Koushi interrupted him and proudly presented it to Koushi.
It was a cake.
Decorated with yellow blossoms.
"Happy birthday, Koushi," Daichi said softly, "I am not much of a baker so I needed help, but I wanted to do something special since I have missed so many birthdays with you already."
Koushi launched himself into Daichi's arms, narrowly missing the cake.

Summary after the cut:
"I don't think you know what you're doing," Suga laughed, watching Daichi haphazardly try to ice a box mix cake they'd just finished.
"I'm a pro baker, I'll have you know. They invited me to Great British Bake Off, but I declined because I was too busy marrying you," Daichi said, only just now noticing that the cake was, in fact, not fully cooked.
Suga stood behind him, looking at the sink full of dishes and the miscellaneous party decorations strewn about. Music played faintly over the speaker. The aftermath of his birthday party.

Daichi makes Suga a box mix birthday cake after all their friends leave his actual birthday party. Things go wrong. A tradition is carried on.

The departures board has switched - his flight now has a departure time, finally - 50 minutes from now.
50 minutes to get all my ducks lined up.
He spends two of those minutes just trying to visualize it.
No, no, they had a good team, they’d pulled through far worse. If he could get a hold of the right people…
He pulls open his phone, scrolling through his contacts, trying to mentally track where everyone currently was, who’d be on hand, who’d be unavailable, and…
He presses the call on the first name he’d need on hand.
It rings-
“Go for Kuroo-”
“Hey!” Daichi says.
“Yoo, Sawa-”
“No time! What are you doing in about six hours? Also, do you own a car?”
Aghast, Koushi covered his mouth which had fallen open, "Daichi, do you think I married him?"
"Did you not?" Daichi's hold on Koushi had slackened and he frowned, "The kingdom needed him and the alliance."
Koushi had assumed a terrifying expression, "Not after what he did to you, us. Oh, when I found out..."
Terrifying but very attractive, Daichi could not help but smile and brush Koushi's cheek with the back of his hand.
Koushi softened almost immediately, leaning into the touch, "I was livid. Heartbroken. How could you leave?"
Daichi immediately opened his mouth to respond, but Koushi shook his head.
"I know, you would never have done so if you had not believed it was the right thing to do," His hazel eyes narrowed with contempt, "That is precisely why I personally executed that snake."
Daichi's mouth fell open.
"You what?" He choked.
Koushi studied him quizzically, "You truly have not heard?"
"Koushi," Daichi framed Koushi's face in his hands solemnly, "If I had known for a moment that Uto was gone, I would have been back to look for you in a heartbeat."
There was a tense silence as Koushi searched Daichi's face. He didn't know what the prince found, what had changed in three years and what had remained the same.
Yet, Koushi nodded, "I know. I know you. That is why I have been searching for you."
"I led our forces to conquer Uto's kingdom instead, who needs an alliance?" Koushi waved a hand as if taking over another country was easy, "He had treated his subjects worse than slaves and many were happy to follow our laws for a better life and proper treatment. Even his ministers were keen to surrender, everything in his government was rife with corruption."
Koushi sighed, "If not for their natural resources, this would not have worked. But their people are happier and they get a fair portion of what they work for."
Daichi nodded carefully, "And how are you here? Are you not needed back at home?"
Sudden movement caught his eye and Daichi nearly drew his sword, only to freeze as familiar faces halted at the treeline.
Ennoshita inclined his head, a small smile on his face as Tanaka let out a yelp and tried to run to Daichi, only to be held back to Ennoshita.
"We will be by the stream," Ennoshita retreated with Tanaka in tow.
"What exactly did you tell them?" Koushi demanded, "They refused to leave me alone even after I abdicated the throne."
Not for the first time that day, Daichi was flabbergasted.
"You what?" He gasped again.
He suddenly felt like all he knew was upended.
This was not the world he had left three years ago.
Koushi shrugged, "Kiyoko was always the better ruler, no reason she should not take the throne just because she is female. Besides, I told her I would return to advise her once I had found you."
The absolute confidence that Koushi had to find him did not escape Daichi.
"But your crown, your people, everything-" Daichi spluttered, "What if you never found me?"
"I would, and I did," Koushi beamed.
"I told Ennoshita and Tanaka that your life was theirs," Daichi said slowly, "They knew what it meant to take this role. They would have followed you to the ends of the earth."
"Good thing we did not have to go that far then," Koushi grinned.
Daichi was silent.
Koushi had done so much and all just to find him.
"I am just a country boy, with nothing to offer you," He whispered.
Gentle, calloused hands cupped his face, tilting it so that he was looking at the one he loved, the one he thought he had lost.
"What was that you said to me before? That I was your path?" Koushi smiled and it was the most beautiful thing Daichi had seen in three years, "Then you are mine, Sawamura Daichi."

“Now Mr. Detective, whoever do you take me for? I wouldn’t waste your time on something so… trivial.”
“I don’t take you for anything, stranger,” he replies, flicking his eyes back up to him. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Sugawara,” he says.
“Just Sugawara?”
“That’s all you’ve ever need to know.”
This boy was gonna kill me. Between those legs and that smile it was like he was designed to torment me - if only we’d met somewhere else. Somewhere I could ask to see the back of those jeans - this is work, though, and clients that come in with ‘something awful’ usually mean it, in this town.
“Well then, Sugawara, what sort of awful are you dealing this evening that couldn’t wait until the morn?”

Summary after the cut:
"Sawamura, move to the back with Sugawara."
Suga wasn't paying attention, but he sure as fuck was now. He watched with a slack jaw as Daichi stood and walked to the back, shooting him a friendly smile and plopping down next to him in a chair.
The universe was so kind today.
"I'm Daichi, I don't believe we've met before," he smiled, leaning his arms on the table and looking over at Suga.
Suga tried very hard not to stutter. "I'm Sugawara, but Suga is fine. Nice to meet you."
While Daichi insisted that everyone he met called him his first name, claiming everyone was his friend, Sugawara decided he was not friendly enough to do that. A nickname would have to do.
Daichi was the definition of a popular guy. He was sweet and smiled at literally everyone with all his teeth. He was the kind of guy to throw his jacket in a puddle so his date wouldn't have to walk in the water. Suga could not say the same for himself, but he sure as hell could appreciate it.
Daichi moved his focus back to the professor, who started to explain the project. Suga kept his attention firmly on Daichi's muscular arms that leaned on the table, like always. How he was passing that class, he did not know.

Daichi and Suga are paired up for a chemistry lab, and Suga is a weak man.

part 2
Dacihi is Suga's guardian, a noble knight or so they used to say.
He stood with his face held high, holding the sword that the previous monarch had given him when he was 12 years old.
Nobody saw his actions coming, nobody believed that he would draw his sword against Suga but he did…
and then he launched himself following the steps of the young king down that cliff…
giving way to a new king… a king who would follow his people who would follow Suga's true wishes…

Prompts used - Partners/Later in life meeting/You just gonna stand there and stare, or are you gonna give me a hand?
Ruthless. Efficient. Unbeatable.
That's what people said of Sawamura the mercenary.
Daichi didn't mind. People left him alone and he got a decent number of jobs.
What was the point of swearing his loyalty to anyone else when his only loyalty would always be to a single person?
Blood and bodies in his wake, Daichi kept walking down the dirt path despite not knowing where he was going.
He had gone far enough away from his kingdom that no news from there would reach him. Call him bitter, but he didn't want to know how happy the royal couple were.
Three years on, there wasn't a night he didn't dream of Koushi.
Koushi's voice whispered in his ear, giving his opinion on anything and everything, laughing or scoffing, telling Daichi not to be so rigid or muttering curses at people when they were rude to Daichi.
In fact, he felt like he could hear Koushi's voice right now and it got louder as a hooded figure burst out of the trees, closely followed by several masked pursuers.
The hooded figure turned once they were on the open road and went on the offensive.
Daichi felt his heart stop.
He would recognize that sword form anywhere.
But it was impossible.
The hooded figure beat one, two then three of the attackers with ease and took the fourth down with a move that had been practised on Daichi countless times.
Their hood had flipped up when they tackled the final attacker and that unmistakable silver hair shone in the sun.
Koushi looked up at Daichi, panting from where he had landed.
He looked different.
The same bright hazel eyes and those soft lips hadn't changed.
But his face was sharper, tanner and his eyes were just a little harder than Daichi remembered.
His voice, though, was exactly as Daichi remembered as he opened his mouth to ask teasingly, "Are you just going to stand there and stare, or are you going to give me a hand?"
Daichi moved slowly, afraid to dispell the illusion, terrified to wake up from this dream.
Holding his breath, he reached down, unsure how heartbreaking it would be if his fingers closed on nothing.
Warm and calloused, Koushi's hand filled his and he pulled.
It was almost as if nothing had changed, with the way Koushi stood and, following the momentum, fluidly stepped into Daichi's embrace.
And it was as if it hadn't been three years, with the way Daichi's arms folded around him, holding him close, breathing in his scent.
"I am sorry," Daichi croaked, "I never wanted to leave you, but-"
"Uto," Koushi nodded, his voice like ice.
Daichi pulled away to stare at Koushi, his head spinning with the impossibility of it all, "How?"
Now, it was Koushi's turn to stare at Daichi, "Have you not heard?"
Dumbly, Daichi shook his head.
Aghast, Koushi covered his mouth which had fallen open, "Daichi, do you think I married him?"

He wanted to scream and cry and beg the gods to change his fate, their fate.
He wanted to draw his sword and skewer Prince Uto, marry Koushi in his stead.
He wanted to ask Koushi to damn everything and run away with him.
But none of those were possible.
He was just a country boy who loved his prince more than life itself. Who would do anything for his prince's safety and happiness.
Even if it meant taking himself out of the equation.
Even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness.
"Leave tonight," Prince Uto had demanded.
Daichi had never envisioned a future without Koushi.
He had never once imagined a time he would not be by Koushi's side. Daichi was a simple man. He would live for Koushi and die for him.
Never did it cross his mind that he would leave him.
Yet, here he was, standing in Koushi's study and breathing in the cedar wood that Koushi smelled of, trying not to choke on the emotions rising within him.
Yet, he had mechanically woken Ennoshita and Tanaka, the ones he trusted the most and told them that Koushi's life was now theirs.
Tanaka had been full of questions, leaping into action, his sword already out of his scabbard.
Ennoshita had taken one look at Daichi's face and tilted his head thoughtfully. Then he had frowned.
All the same, he had nodded with the gravity that Daichi had come to respect him for and rested a hand on Daichi's shoulder.
"He will be safe with us," Ennoshita had vowed.
It was only that vow, echoing in Daichi's ears, that had kept one foot ahead of the other.
Koushi's study was faintly illuminated with the prelude to dawn, just the softest hint of light grazing the room that Daichi had spent countless afternoons in, watching Koushi pore over tomes and treatises.
He had to go.
The titles of the books blurred and Daichi blinked rapidly, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
Reaching out in a motion that felt so familiar, he easily picked out Koushi's favourite title and carefully tucked a yellow blossom that he had been saving into the pages.
He had been pleased when he found the flower, imagining the smile on Koushi's face when he placed it in those silver locks.
Never again.
Daichi took only his valuables, fit into a single satchel. Then he rode towards the eastern gates as the sun began to rise.
Wedding bells began to toll as he reached the outer walls.

“That kind of missing person’s case isn’t exactly a civilian’s duty,” Daichi adds, as Suga plants his foot into his hands and they time the jump so that Daichi could lift him up, shoving enough that he could catch the end of the window. Suga does, and Daichi swivels underneath him to bend down and get his feet on his shoulders, straightening up to his full height and giving Suga a place to stand as he shoves the window open more.
“I’m not a civilian. I’m an investigative journalist,” Suga reminds him.
“You’re a reporter for a local independent newspaper,” Daichi corrects, putting his hands on the back of Suga’s legs to keep him steady. “Your job is to interview high school principals about their school’s sports teams and write heartwarming fluff pieces about the dogs in the local pound.”
Suga rolls his eyes. “At least I’m not unemployed,” he sings.
“Hey!” Daichi scowls, before wincing slightly as Suga pushes off his shoulders and hauls himself up through the window. “I am not unemployed! I am self-employed! I have a registered business!”

(this story continues on the fourth day)
Suga was the legitimate son of the king, a tyrant king who was destined to die
and that is why he decided to inherit that chaos to his "only son"
Although Suga planned to leave aside his father's ambitions, he "blessed" him with following all the steps that his father wrote for him in a diary.
Once this man passed away, Suga would follow in his footsteps to the letter… or so he thought.
