Briar visibly sighed in relief when she realized her children had not targeted one of the meaner citizens of Madison. The last thing she needed was for her name to be on their gossiping lips even more. Her divorce was still hot news. “Guess she thought you might give her the candy she’s cryin’ for so much.” Joked Briar, tossing one glance to her giggling babies. Ivy had no regrets, and Briar couldn’t stay mad at all. “Goodness, don’t lie to me like that. These two are nicknamed the terrible ones for a reason.” She half joked, but was half serious.
“Well she’s in luck,” Daisy grinned, reaching into her apron to pull out the strawberry flavored candy she’d stuck in there just a few minutes prior to finishing her break. “I’ll just give this to you though so I don’t ruin her appetite or anything,” she handed the small wrapped candy over to Briar, smiling at the twins who were watching their interaction with wide eyes. “No lies here, I promise. Some of the fits I’ve seen would put this to shame. I’ve cleaned up one too many messes from kids so these two are perfectly fine.” And Daisy wasn’t lying. Some of the kids were downright terrible that the girl couldn’t help but wonder how they were raised in such a way.

“So you’re just honest, I think that’s a good trait,” he was an honest guy, but he was a gentle guy too, which was why when he was going to talk to someone about something sensible, he tried to be careful not to talk about it, in a way that could end up hurting them somehow, “I did, but you probably just didn’t notice me, I tend to be someone that can be quiet and pretty invisible when I want to,” he was not the biggest fan of being the center of attention, so he tried as hard as he could, to be unnoticed, but it wasn’t always that it was possible, “It has been pretty good, I like how relaxing the town can be,” it was a big change from how his former home was like, “I moved because I had nothing else left for me back at home.”
“Well, thanks. I try to be, anyway. Lyin’ just makes me feel awful and at some point someone always finds out so it just seems like there’s no point,” Daisy joked with a small smile. It also scared her but she wasn’t about to confess that to a stranger who probably didn’t care or really even know her. “That’s probably it then. Or just a matter of timin’ is all. Well, now that I know ya I hope you’re prepared for me to babble when you come through my line.” Working the check-out at the grocers was how Daisy knew so much about what was going on around town since she didn’t get out much. “Are you liking it alright then? I know some of the people can be a little overwhelming sometimes.”

Breaking from the suffocatingly dense occupancy within the venue and into the hazy Southern evening was a relief Bo had been desperately seeking since the event began. How many times throughout the night did she contemplate making a swift and silent exit when she was feeling particularly overwhelmed. She took great lengths to remain discreet in her attendance, carefully hiding away where she could enjoy the festivities in peace. Bo never intended to draw attention to herself, she didn’t come to be looked at. Thank goodness she found an ally to aide in her endeavors and who better than the bashfully spirited girl beside her. This was all she ever really needed, nothing but the company of the a good friend and stars which filled the sky like pale corn into freshly turned ground.
A breathe escaped her in contentment, shoulders losing their previous tension and skin immediately warming in the heat. However Daisy’s question forced her to pause. “No I–” she stuttered out, momentarily caught off guard. “Um…I came with someone” she finished, dropping her gaze as a slow smile grew. Bo didn’t know if it was the term ‘date’ that suddenly had her flustered or just the very thought of Nevada alone, but her cheeks took on a light pink hue. “He’ll be okay by himself for a little while, he’s a lot more sociable than I am” this she was grateful for as it meant she could use him as a buffer to deter any unwanted conversation. “And you? Is anyone escorting you tonight?”. Not that Bo believed having a date was a requirement by any means. Perhaps it was her own fondness for the girl leading her opinions but she couldn’t imagine why someone wouldn’t want to snatch some quality time with the blonde.
A smile spread across Daisy’s features as Bo mentioned coming with someone. That was news to her, though Daisy supposed she hadn’t asked before when the two had discussed the ball previously while Bo was checking out from her most recent grocery trip. “Someone?” Daisy questioned, head titled to the side. “I’m gonna need you to explain because it sounds like if ya came here with someone, it’s a date and nothin’ else,” she teased, giving Bo a knowing look. The smile on her friend’s face was easy to read, clear as day that the girl had feelings for whoever she’d come with in some capacity. “No, came alone. I don’t even usually come to these but my mama had already picked me out a dress and I couldn’t say no so I’m here just to give her peace of mind that I do leave my apartment from time to time,” she explained with a roll of her eyes. “No one asked either but that’s alright. Easier for me to leave when I want.”

It was clear that Sadie was losing the battle over a puppy. And truly, it wasn’t much of a battle. She had every intention of giving in. But she played the role of a reluctant mother, shaking her head with a smirk. “I’ll think about it. We have to ask your Dad what he thinks.” Sadie pulled up a picture of a shih tzu on her phone and showed it to Daisy. “They’re yappy little dogs. I tried making the case for a lab or something, but no. He wants a toy sized puppy.”
Surprised colored Daisy’s expression at their choice of a dog, tilting her head. “Really? I’m surprised you aren’t thinkin’ about something a little bigger,” she confessed. Daisy knew how great Caleb was with her pit-mix Lady but figured Sadie knew what she was talking about and shrugged. “It’s a dang cute dog though, either way. Makes me want a second but I don’t think I could fit another pup in here with how much room this one takes up,” she motioned towards Lady who was lying in her bed tucked in the corner of the kitchen.

Some have called him a real life hero before, because of the job that he had, but despite the fact that he did see firefighters as heroes, when it came to himself, it was different, “You sure know how to stroke one’s ego,” he gave her a small smile, knowing that she was just being playful, and didn’t actually mean what she said, “You could say that, yeah, I have been here for like two weeks or so, so I guess I can still be considered new,” he still got a little lost from time to time, but in no way as much as he used to when it was his first days. He couldn’t walk around without a GPS.
“Just callin’ it like I see it,” she told him honestly. The girl didn’t know how to be anything but. She didn’t say thing just for the sake of them, or exaggerate stories just to sound more interesting. It wasn’t something she was taught and never felt right. “Two weeks? Well you must’ve stopped by the grocer at some point. I’ll have to keep an eye out and say hi if I see ya.” Daisy loved her customers and it was nice getting to chat with everyone while at work since she couldn’t be out and about more. “How are you likin’ it so far? What had you movin’ out here?” Curious by nature, Daisy always wondered how non-locals ended up in the small town.

Roman kept his gaze on her, noticing the surprised expression on her features but the expression on his face didn’t change even though it wanted too. He wondered how certain people looked at him and with Daisy, he had never been sure how the blonde looked at him. “Only sometimes?” He teased as he reached out to grab his beer, bringing it to his lips, taking a small sip of it. His eyebrow arched at her little hiccup, a little smirk coming along his lips as he tapped his fingers against the side of his beer bottle. “Where do your parents live?” He asked. Usually, he wasn’t the small talk type… All he had to do was turn on the charm and the next thing he knew they were always tangled between sheets but somehow Daisy had always been different. The shy and nervous act. It got to him for some reason. “Yeah.” He chuckled softly, nodding his head. “Most people feel that way about cars but there’s somethin’ about getting grease on my hands… I just love it.” His tongue brushed along his lower lips as his gaze drifted down her, shrugging up a shoulder. “No reason, just curious.”
“I said what I said. I still just work at the grocer so it’s not like I’m a genius or anything,” she sighed, picking at the bar top. It really didn’t bother Daisy all that much that she was still in Madison, doing the same thing she was 5 years later. She liked her life, all things considered. Her eyes wandered over to Roman once her drink was sat back on the bar and bit her lap as she watched his lips cup the glass as he took a drink of his own beer. Mesmerized by the movement, Daisy quickly shook herself out of her daydream and titled her head at his question. “They’re a couple blocks down from the movie theater. Been in the same house since before I was born.” Strange didn’t even begin to cover how Daisy felt at Roman’s questions but she wasn’t in the mood to try and decipher why it seemed like he was trying to get to know her. It felt like some sort of trick and Daisy realized she didn’t care at this point, her drink almost gone. “You like getting dirty then, hm?” Glancing up, Daisy smirked. A comment like that was too bold for something she’d normally reply with but it felt good, to push herself to say what she really wanted to. “You seein’ anyone?” She countered back. “Saw you and Chesney at the ball last week.”

“Really?” her eyebrows rose. “Honestly, I don’t know anything about fashion. Someone could be wearing a million bucks and I wouldn’t think twice. You make it look great.” She shrugged off Daisy’s compliment. She didn’t care what the town or others thought about her anymore. Especially when it came to Belle Ball attire. “I didn’t get any actually. Got a little too excited over the thought and got way too careless.”
“Me too,” Daisy agreed with a soft sigh, smiling. Daisy would be hard pressed to know high value if it stared her in the face and she really didn’t mind all that much. Thrifting was like a sport to her and she was well versed in picking out and sorting through bins to find the treasures people tossed to the side. “Well thanks. Not really much a fan of dressing up but figured it would be fun.” Brushing off the side of her dress, Daisy glanced around then back to Charlie. “Well hopefully there’s somethin’ else that’ll be just as good. I haven’t looked around yet though I’m after the sweets table, I think.”

“The worst thing that could ever happen to this world.” Nimet said in a cryptical voice, eyes narrowed as she looked ahead of her to the nothingness. “Rude teenagers. Leaving nothing but chaos wherever they go. They just laughed at me when one pushed me and made me drop it.” She pointed at the melted scoops. “Oh, if I could catch them.” She curled a hand into a fist although truth be told, even if she had the chance Nimet wouldn’t be able to hurt the teenagers or anyone. Letting out a sigh, her shoulder fell.
“It really is. Ice cream on a hot day only for it to fall to the ground and melt immediately? Can’t say there are worse things to happen,” Daisy agreed, glancing back down at the colored rivers of ice cream that were decorating the sidewalk. “Wait, they pushed you? I’d be tracking them down if I were you. I’m so sorry.” Some of the kids in Madison were straight up trouble makers, knowing Daisy had kicked out her fair share at the grocers when they tried to steal or make a mess. “Want to grab another scoop? I know it’s not the same but.”

As much as she loved Daisy, Sadie thought it was inappropriate to share her problems. Given their considerable age difference, she was unprepared to actually open up and be vulnerable. Instead, she wanted to ask all the questions. It was nothing against Daisy – in fact, Sadie was sure that she’d be gracious and kind under those circumstances – but why should a 24 year old carry her load? Sadie had plenty of support in her life without dragging a young girl into the mix. So even if Caleb wasn’t sitting at the table, she’d probably still keep the news to herself. She was relieved for the subject change, scrunching her nose at Daisy. “That was the wrong answer, Daisy,” she laughed. “You’re supposed to tell him it’s a big job, and Mommy’s not gonna clean up after the dog.” Caleb was grinning, excited for even the prospect of a puppy. He tugged on Daisy’s arm to plead for her support, promising to care for his pet. “Tell her what kind you want,” Sadie encouraged. Caleb told her that he wanted a shih tzu, to which Sadie made a face that said Yes, really.
“Wrong answer?” Daisy laughed, “Okay, okay. Your mother is absolutely right Caleb. Having a pup is a big responsibility and if you want it to live a long and healthy life, you gotta make sure you’re ready for it. Can’t rely on momma to do all the hard work.” Daisy knew first hand how difficult raising a dog on your own was and hoped she could help, even just a tiny bit. When Caleb started tugging her on arm, Daisy sighed dramatically. “I’m sure you’ll be great at it though. You’re smart and you are good with Lady.” The little boy was amazing with Daisy’s own dog, gentle with his pets and even trying to teach her new tricks when they were hunkered down at her apartment when it was too hot outside to even think of walking anywhere. At the mention of the breed, Daisy tried to think of what they looked like. “They’re smaller, right?” She turned to Sadie, unsure.

Daisy seemed to have a lot on her plate. Sadie was always worrying that she didn’t have someone to lean on. She knew a lot about caring for her own parents, so she sympathized with the younger woman. “You’re a good girl, Daisy,” she praised, hoping it wasn’t condescending. “Your parents are lucky. Hope your dad is okay.” Sadie chuckled when Daisy wiggled her eyebrows, not ready to talk about herself. She shrugged her shoulders and replied, “I’m fine. Nothing new.”
That was a lie, but Caleb didn’t know that his stepmother was pregnant, so she kept it to herself. Instead, she changed the subject by saying, “Caleb keeps askin’ for a puppy. What do you think? I told him it’s a lot of responsibility.”
The thought of doing anything but taking care of her parents hadn’t even crossed Daisy’s mind. Things for them started to go down hill around the time Daisy was in her junior year and that’s when she’d taken her job down at the grocers, to help out the second she could when she turned 16. Some kids would resent their parents for asking for so much help but Daisy knew her parents wouldn’t ask if they didn’t need it. “Thanks. I try, you know?” She shrugged. It was nice to hear every once in a while that what she was choosing to do was the right thing. “He’s good, all things considered. Just needs to know when to stop.” Daisy rolled her eyes, thinking about her father.
“Nothing new? I don’t believe that for a second,” Daisy pointed out, finishing off her cookie and downing the glass of milk in one go. It was easy for the younger girl to pick up on the fact that Sadie was hiding something but Daisy didn’t want to push. “A puppy huh?” Turning to Caleb, she crossed her arms in front of her with a serious look. “Well, you’re pretty good with my Lady so I think you’d be a good pet parent,” she nodded, glancing back to Sadie. “What kind of pup are you thinking about?”

How crowded it was, was something that bothered him lightly. He would probably be able to distract himself eventually, but how many people there were, would make harder for him to dance, as he always got extremely self conscious about his skills. He was scared that people would judge him for how he danced, despite being told that he was really good at it, it was hard for him to do in front of such a big group of people, but at least he wouldn’t do it on a stage, so he would probably eventually just get out of his comfort zone, like he did sometimes, and go to the dance floor, “Yeah, I managed to stop a disaster from happening, so I’m okay.”
Daisy was a bit of a loner herself. Even the friends she still kept in touch without after high school hadn’t spoken to her yet despite the fact that she knew they’d seen her come in. It didn’t matter, really. She hadn’t come for them but for her mama, to appease her and show her that she did have somewhat of a social life. “Well, you’re a real life hero then,” Daisy quipped, giving him an encouraging smile. “Are you new to Madison?” It was rare that Daisy didn’t know someone and it always caught her off guard when she met someone new to the town.

From her expertly chosen vantage point, partially hidden in one of the dining tables set in the back of the venue, Bo-mi watched the twirling couples float across the dance floor and felt a kind of peace fill her. It really was such a lovely thing, everything about the evening seemed to have delicate enchanting hue as if she’d entered a scene from a fairy-tale. As much as Bo avoided social events like the plague she had no issue feeling appreciation for it from afar. She was an observer, it was her forte. Never seen, never heard, but always there. There were few people who appreciated this about her, or rather, who accepted that some people were comfortable on the sidelines. It seemed almost taboo in a town where the majority of the residents were blessed with naturally engaging personalities.
Regardless, she still loved her town ever so and the few within in who had managed to find a place in her fickle heart. One of which was making her way towards her makeshift hideaway. Instantly she perked up, a easy smile resting on her face as Daisy approached. “Daisy” she greeted fondly. As soft spot had formed for the younger girl upon realizing she in fact wasn’t the only one with meeker tendencies. It was truly a relief to connect with someone who just understood. “Me? You look just darling” she complimented, looping an arm carefully through hers. “I’m glad you came to see me actually, I was thinking I needed a bit of a break from the crowd. Want to get some fresh air with me?”
Daisy felt a woosh of air leave her at Bo’s soft smile and it felt like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Being around Bo-mi was a comfort Daisy hoped to never take for granted. She was a breath of fresh air in Madison and Daisy felt lucky that she could call Bo a friend, bonding over their similar personality traits and love of a good horror film. Daisy hated that it was so easy to make her blush and she gave Bo-Mi a grateful smile. “Stop,” she laughed, throwing a hand out to wave her off. Locking her arm with Bo’s, Daisy quickly agreed. “It’s like you read my mind. Please,” she begged, glancing around for a door and navigating their way around until they pushed through a pair of double doors and were met with the muggy air outside.
“So, did you just ditch a date or come by yourself?” Daisy asked, curious. It was a shame she didn’t know much about Bo-Mi’s personal life and she hoped to change that, one small question at a time and this was the perfect opportunity.

She was already reaching for the useless cocktail napkins when the waitstaff waved her off. They all wore faces of restrained annoyance that she’d never be able to successfully pull off. She turned to Daisy with a guilty smile. “Yeah, no problem, thing looks like it cost a fortune.” Her red dress had been bought on clearance in LA when she was nineteen. “I hope you weren’t craving the shrimp.”
Daisy hoped her dress hadn’t cost a fortune, knowing her mama had probably spent her left over utility bill money on it. Blushing with a nod, Daisy smiled. “Thanks. I’m sure it’s just something she picked out at a consignment shop but I bet she’ll love hearin’ you thought it was expensive.” Daisy was lucky if anything she bought was new with tags still on, used to hand-me-downs from her older cousins and clothes from the thrift store. “Now your dress,” she pointed, “looks like somethin’ out of a Hollywood movie.” Charlie looked stunning in her red dress and Daisy hoped someone had told Charlie that before she did. “Not a fan of raw fish so we’re all good here. I hope you got to eat some before they fell at least.”

Roman kept his eyes on her, a low chuckle leaving his lips at her words. “Alright, you’ve got a fair point. This town is way too small for the whole no time no see speech,” he rested his arms down against the surface of the bar, his hand reaching out to grab his beer. He brought it to his lips, taking a long sip of it. “How are you likin’ it at the grocer?” He asked as he slowly put his cup back down. “Just workin’ at Rusty’s Auto Shop… I ain’t doin’ anything too exciting.” He smirked at her as his eyes shamelessly ran down her figure before slowly lifting back up to her face. “You uh - seein’ anyone?”
Hearing Roman agree with her caught Daisy off guard and she turned to him with a surprised look painted across her face. “Sometimes I’m smart,” she almost giggled, turning back to her drink while she turned a little red. Taking a generous gulp of the drink that had only been placed in front of her seconds ago, she downed almost half before slightly hiccuping. “It’s alright. I’ve gotten enough raises by bein’ there that I can live on my own, even if it’s just a few blocks away from my parents.” She knew it sounded lame but she was just proud of the fact that she lived on her own in general. “Rusty’s huh? Cars confuse the hell outta me and I always feel like they’re rippin’ me off just a little because they know that,” she admitted with a shrug. Daisy could feel his eyes on her as she sat there, sucking in a bit and straightening up her back so she didn’t slouch. His question caught her off guard and she whipped to look him in the eye with a bewildered look. “No- what? Why?”

Caleb spent a lot of time with Daisy, and that’s how Sadie justified her close inspection of the apartment. It was a bit sad-looking, lacking decor and feeling incomplete. She wondered if Daisy felt lonely in this place, filing it away for another time. Sadie happily dunked her cookie and nodded her head. “Tuesday works for us. Thank you for everything Daisy– And Caleb, you’d better be a good boy. Miss Daisy will tell me if you’re actin’ up.” Practically vibrating in his seat, Caleb squealed, “Oh yeah! I love the movies!” Sadie watched him get excited and smiled to herself.
Pleased with her cookies-and-milk date, she sighed contently. “How are you, Daisy?” There was only so much they could share with Caleb at the table, but hopefully she could get a read on the girl’s wellbeing. “Life bein’ good to you?”
“Awesome. It’s a date then, Caleb.” Daisy grinned, watching at how excited he seemed to be. She’d always admired the way Sadie had raised him. Caleb was polite and positive and Daisy loved learning new quirks about him the more time she spent around the small boy. “I’m almost sure he’ll behave. Don’t think I’ve ever had a bad time with this one.” She pointed a wiggling finger at him that earned her a giggle. Taking a bite of the cookie and smiling at the taste, she turned to Sadie at her question and swallowed before answering. “I’m alright as can be. Gotta head to my parents later today to help my mama with some meal prep for the week since my dad’s been having trouble movin’ around but he says he’s fine,” she shrugged it off, taking a sip of the milk in front of her. “What about you? Anything new with you?” Wiggling her eyebrows, Daisy grinned. She loved hearing about Sadie’s personal life, getting to live vicariously through her.
