Your Manny series? I'm in love with it and I was hoping you could finish it off with a happy ending. I know Manny came back to his "Angel." But im hoping we can see him spend the weeks after that nursing her back to health like an overprotective helicopter parent/nurse. "Mi amor sit down." "I got it Angel." "Ey mami! Siéntate, no quiero que te hagas daño." (Sit down i don't want you to hurt yourself) "I understand I may be smothering you Angel but... I won't lose you. Not again... I... I can't go through it again."
And after a few months or a year or so, because Manny would wanna take a while to make sure she is healed and healthy they would get married if front of the entire town and have "QUITE A FEW KIDS" due to the lack of birth control or they adopt them. Maria would be the one to marry them obviously. 💚💚💚
I re read getaway car a few days ago and I was like...i need to continue these two cuties' story. so thank youuuu for this request and i am terribly sorry for the late response 😭💔.
Warnings: Mentions of Injuries, Bruises, Reader's dead parents, Parental Guilt, Cursing, Angst, Fluff, Canon typical violence and sense of doom, Whipped and Helicopter Parent Manny, Marriage, Weddings, Insecurities, Emotions, Lots of family fluff, Joel is the best dad, Reader is called "Mama" but no other physical descriptions or wedding outfit descriptions, Reader is hinted to have given birth, Adoption, everything is kept vague so that it's not generalised. "Ay mami! Siéntate, no quiero que te hagas daño! Do you want me to put you on lockdown?"
You grumbled as you heard his voice echo in the still room. He'd said these exact words for the third time in a day.
See, you knew Manny was a helicopter parent when it came to you being hurt. But this?
This was a whole new level of helicopter parenting that'd even put some of the actual parents out there in shame. Because he didn't even want you to use the washroom on your room, he didn't want you to adjust the blankets on your own-
He did not want you doing anything.
"Emmanuel you're not being serious if you think I need help for adjusting my blanket as well", you groaned loudly, wincing when the movement hurt your sore ribs.
“See, see! Told you to lay back down, baby. Let me help”, he fussed again, gently pushing you back down on the bed with a hand holding your hips, thumb gently rubbing against the fabric of your shirt to soothe the pain while simultaneously pulling the blanket up till it reached your chin.
You looked up at him with a pout. “Manny, my back is killing me from sitting the entire time! And besides, they did clear me for taking slow walks. Please, I wanna go and see the cherry blossoms.”
The cherry blossom trees that were planted outside of Joel's house were finally in bloom and you’d been dying to see them. It was something you’d always look forward to seeing, ever since you got to Jackson. It was a routine you’d had with Joel, especially after Ellie moved out. It not only helped the two of you to unwind after a long day, but also helped you to forget about all the dark, unwelcome thoughts about Manny and Joel greatly appreciated the quiet company. His grumpy unwillingness to be looked after had fizzed out the day Ellie turned away from him. He told you every time that he was extremely grateful that you chose to do this with him, his big doe eyes shining with a vulnerability and softness that made your heart squeeze with love and empathy for the old man.
Manny sighed softly, closing his eyes in resignation. He couldn’t say no to you or your pout or stop you from spending time with your dad. Besides, you’d already spent like a week on bed rest and the doctors had encouraged you to exercise eventually, especially if you complained about your body being sore and stiff.
And he knows how much you love watching the cherry blossoms with Joel. It was an annual tradition that you made sure to follow, no matter how sick or tired either of you were.
“You sure you can walk? I don't- I can't see you in pain”, he asked while brushing your hair back lovingly, his brown eyes twinkling in the morning light that filtered through the gauzy curtains on your bedroom windows. The light made his curls look like a halo and you had to fight the urge to run your fingers through them.
"Yes, baby, I swear. And you'll be there to catch me if I fall, right?", you looked up at him with a knowing smile because he has not left your side ever since he came back from the...excursion.
He's taken shit from everyone because he'd been acting like a proper mother hen. His cheeks would be flushed red by the time he came home after finishing any work around the commune because Joel, Tommy and Maria teased him endlessly for talking about you and worrying over you in every breath.
Ellie would slap his hands away every time he tried to coddle you, grunting about how you were completely capable of yourself and how you didn't need him when she was over. He'd pout like a hamster the whole night after she would leave. He was so easily rage bait-able that Ellie took full advantage of it.
"Of course, I'll be there. Always", he leaned in and pressed a warm kiss to your eyebrow, one hand smoothing over your bed head and the other gently holding your chin.
-
"Easy, I got you. You can lean on me completely, I don't mind. Let me know when to stop, hm?", your fiancé gently encouraged you as you walked towards Joel's house, a strong arm hooked around your waist, bearing most of your weight on him while his other hand grasped your own tightly, ensuring full support to you while you winced every now and then with the movement.
"Hold on", a raspy voice spoke next to you while their strong arms went around your waist to help you upright. Manny and you looked on your left, a smile already stretching at your lips at the familiar southern drawl and smell of coffee wafting around you.
"Hey, old man", you greeted Joel with a waver in your voice, slowly making your way over to the porch of the Miller house, carefully going up the stairs before your two bodyguards gently lowered you on the swing that Joel had recently installed.
You grunted before sitting, your hands squeezing both of the men's shoulders, them crouching in front of you until the pain subsided and your breathing went back to normal. Letting out a deep sigh, you flashed the two of them a smile as a thank you before they stood up, Manny's hand still resting in between your shoulder blades as if he couldn't part from you for even a second. Joel smirked at the younger man's clinginess, shaking his head in disbelief.
"At ease, soldier. She's at her own house, no need to micromanage", he teased Manny, making you giggle while Manny's cheeks instantly heated up. Joel might have been well over 60, but his constant dry and sarcastic humor never failed to make you laugh. This instance was particularly funny because Joel was just as, if not more, overprotective, as Manny was. He'd buzzed around you like a nervous bee when you came back, both of them making you crazy with their helicopter parenting.
Manny ducked his head, his thumb rubbing circles over your shirt, eyes shyly finding yours.
You never got tired of seeing this side of him. He'd get so flustered so easily, you cherished it dearly, being deprived of it for too long. Back then he was always focused on keeping you alive, overprotectiveness and tough love were the only two emotions he let himself feel.
"Tommy's been askin' for you, by the way. Told me he asked you to help 'em with a small football tournament for the kids. You're a good 30 minutes late. Better go to work before Maria gets here and makes you do a double shift", Joel grumbled before moving around Manny to take a seat next to you, nudging him away playfully so that he's separated from you. You stifle a laugh again.
Manny stood there with his mouth open, eyes wide and hand hovering in the air as if he just came to a realisation. "No-no, I'm- I was about to leave. I just wanted to help-Sorry", he stammered though his sentence, which was also so unlike him but you chuckled softly.
"Relax, babe. He's just pulling your leg", you nudged Joel who smirked childishly, crossing his arms and shrugging as if he didn't know what he was doing.
Manny deflated and side eyed Joel, mimicking his position and snuffing his boot against the wooden floor like a child who was told off for stealing candy. You rolled your eyes in fondness.
"Sometimes I think both of you are like, 12. Anyways, you should go meet Tommy now. I'll be right here, okay?", you reassured Manny with a gentle look in your eyes, coaxing him closer, to which he responded with kneeling in front of you, hands resting next to your thighs on the swing for support, brown eyes looking up at you with furrowed brows.
Joel smiled and looked away, playing the part of a perfect nonchalant dad (which he wasn't.)
"I'll be back in an hour or so, yeah? If I'm late, please have your lunch and the painkillers. I'll even bring you that pastry you like from Nonna's", Manny smiled knowingly, well versed with your little obsession with Nonna Lucy's strawberry pastries. She had a small bakery here in the commune and you were her absolute favourite customer. Ever since you had helped her set up her store and carried her stuff back home when she first arrived here, she'd always saved some of the stuff aside so that you could take it home. She'd give the box away with a sweet kiss on your cheek, holding your face in her wrinkled, soft hands in the way grandmothers did.
You instantly brightened at that.
"The strawberry one?" Manny nodded, you squeezed his wrists, your eyes twinkling, "Could you please get the banofee bread as well? I haven't had it in so long", a dreamy sigh left your lips as you reminisced about the soft and perfectly sweet bread that lifted your moods on the darkest of days.
Manny chuckled, sliding his hands up to intertwine your fingers with his, lifting it to kiss your knuckles slowly. "Okay, angel. Anything else?"
You pretended to think for a minute before shaking your head, a tiny smile tugging at your lips. "No. Just you."
You watched that same pink shade dust his cheeks before he leaned up to kiss your lips slowly and longingly, a hand positioned behind your head, tenderly holding you. You returned the kiss, parting when a throat cleared itself next to you, your noses brushing together as Manny straightened up immediately.
"I'll, uh- I'll see you. Bye, angel", he cleared his throat, caressing your cheek, his eyes looking at you with all the love in the world before reluctantly separating, muttering a 'Bye' to Joel with a nervous smile. Joel nodded at him and Manny took off, not before turning back for a last time to look at you down the road.
"Like a damn puppy", Joel snorted, causing you to giggle and pat his shoulder.
"Oh, c'mon, leave him alone! I'm just happy he feels comfortable enough to be so open with us", you said while admiring the bright pink blossoms in front of you.
Joel let out a sigh and took your hand on his shoulder, gently holding it between his larger ones, eyes trained on the way the cherry blossoms flew in the breeze. "I know. I'm happy for you two. It's why I haven't been visiting you as often because I know he'd look after you just fine."
You turned to look at him, surprised at how sincere and open he sounded. Joel wasn't exactly known for wearing his heart on the sleeve. but he's always had a soft spot for you and Ellie. That'd never change. But this is one of the rare moments where he'd openly talked about how he thinks Manny is good for you. A rare moment where he voices his approval for the younger man with so much fondness and honesty.
He turned to look at you before chuckling bashfully, his slightly chubbier cheeks lifting up, causing the crows feet next to his eyes crinkle heartily. A sign of age and experience, both. "Alright, don't look so surprised. I'll take my words back."
You rolled your eyes jokingly and chuckled under your breath.
A few moments of silence passed, the two of you relishing in the cold breeze and sway of the trees when Joel spoke up again.
"So...when's the weddin'?"
Your cheeks warmed up at the question. The entire commune knew that Manny and you were going to get married anytime soon, that golden band on your left ring finger and Manny's fingers always caressing it were clear signs of his endless commitment to you and the promise of forever.
"Dunno. I told him to wait till I can walk two steps without feeling dizzy. Though he insists we'd be married in our bedroom and he'd be just as happy", you said with a shy look in your eyes, Manny's serious and devoted face flashing in front of them.
Joel hummed. "We know. He literally tilted that abandoned store upside down to find that ring for you", he scoffed, his accent sounding thicker than normal. "Wouldn't leave my basement until he learnt how to polish it with his own hands."
The two of you share a comfortable laugh.
"He reminds me of Tommy, with his sass n' charm n' impulsivity. Hell, even looks like he could be his twin", he shook his head in disbelief before looking down at you, your smiling face and eyes directed at the ring on your finger.
"I know, I thought the same when I saw Tommy for the first time too. Thought, I'd kill to see the two of them in the same room someday", you reminisced, how much you'd missed Manny that day when you entered Jackson and Joel introduced you to Tommy. "Look at them now, sharing workspaces, planning tournaments for kids and Manny babysitting Tommy's kid. Who would've thought, right?"
Joel gives you a smile before squeezing your hand. "I might not say it often but...", he swallowed before continuing, reminding himself of all the lessons from therapy and just saying it out loud instead of suppressing his feelings. "I'm glad ya'll are here, kid. Listen to your old man and keep each other close for eternity, hm? Protect what you love. Keep that warmth close.”
You felt your eyes tear up, chest squeezing at the warm and fatherly tone. You'd never thought you’d be alive to witness this side of Joel. Hell, you never even thought that you’d be alive and still be with Manny, even after all the separation, death and chaos surrounding you two.
“I will, Joel. Thank you”, you flashed him a sweet smile before laying your head on his broad shoulder, squeezing his hand twice and letting out a huge sigh of relief. You didn’t have to say anything else. That ‘thank you’ expressed everything you’ve ever wanted to say to him.
Relief at having Manny in your life. Relief at having Joel alive. Relief of finding a new family.
Relief of simply existing, and being able to experience being loved by your people.
-
Time went by slowly.
Joel and you chatted about everything and anything. Right from gossiping about the newest couples in the commune, to what were you deciding for dinner today. It was your favourite thing to do, because no matter how much he denied it, Joel was a huge gossiper. You never teased him for it, but you cherished the ridiculousness of it whenever he’d let out those silly, contained giggles in between a story. He also fed you the soup and sandwich he'd made, given you painkillers on time, and you were back to chatting soon after, your empty bowls carefully placed on the ground in front of you.
It felt good. To sit here, to feel the wind on your skin, to sit on the porch of your family’s house and people watch.
And before you knew it, your Manny was back.
He was carrying two paper bags in his hands, filled with treats, no doubt, and looked up at you with a toothy smile, the setting sun hit his hair just right and made them look like a golden-orange wonder, his brown eyes twinkling from adoration as he looked at you.
"Hey, amor", he called out as he climbed up the porch stairs, leaning down to press a kiss to your head and nodded at Joel as a 'Hello', before turning back to you, "Did you have lunch?"
You nodded and held out a hand for him to help you up, which he eagerly accepted, with one hand splayed on your shoulder blades. "Good", Manny murmured and kissed your lips, "Ready to go?", at his gentle request, you smiled and nodded in reply. Joel looked at you two before shaking his head with a smile, as he watched Manny somehow juggle the paper bags in his hand and support you at the same time.
"Nonna gave a free donut as a 'get well soon' treat", Manny chuckled as you stood up.
You let out a tiny gasp and jutted out your bottom lip. "She didn't! Oh, I need to go see her. Will you take me?"
"Yes, but we need to ice your ribs and make dinner for now. We'll go tomorrow, okay?", he replied with a kiss pressed to your temple.
You grunted before turning towards Joel, who was smirking with his arms crossed. You narrowed your eyes at him, to which he chuckled and stood up, both hands bracing his knees, groans of pain leaving his lips and his eyes squinting shut.
Manny and you jolted forward to help him, the movement pulling at your bruise and making you bite your lip in pain, but you forgot about it for a moment. Joel's knee pain will always remind you of that fated day. It never fails to make all of you freeze with dread as the reminder of Joel escaping his death would always manifest in his chronic pain.
Joel raised a hand to stop you two, gently laying it on Manny's shoulder as a way to reassure that he was okay.
The two of you swallowed thickly.
"Go home safe, you two. I'll be watchin' until you turn the corner. Lemme know if you want some help with the dinner, I'll ask Ellie to send some over, hm?", Joel's gruff voice replied as he patted Manny's shoulder before ruffling your hair.
You looked up at him in adoration, eyes misty with love for this old man who tried so hard to look all tough, but he was as soft as that brown jacket he'd wear. Your lips parted to say the same request as you'd make ever since he'd been fighting with Ellie:
"Why don't you just move in with us? Isn't that easier?"
Manny rubbed a thumb across the back of your hand as he noticed how soft your voice had become. This was a sensitive topic, he knows that very well.
You would cry to him every night that it killed you to see Joel all alone in that big, empty house. Your protectiveness towards the older man came from a place of not having your own parents to look after. You worried, all the time. You'd tell Manny--"What if he falls and breaks a bone? What if he's injured and no one's there to help him? What if he feels so lonely that he distances himself even more? I can't watch him sit alone on the porch like that, Manny. Can't we bring him here? With us? The house is too big for us, anyways. He'd love the company. And..And I'd sleep peacefully if I knew he was safe, with us."
He never said no. He'd always tell you that Joel is welcome at your place, anytime. He just worried about Ellie misunderstanding the whole thing. Manny knows you don't mean to make Ellie feel bad. In fact, you'd be happier if both of them lived with you. But you understood she was a new adult and wanted her own space, and you respected that. But you cared about and loved Joel just as much too. You felt safe with him. He was how you'd imagined your father would be like, had he been alive today. And besides, if Joel moved in with you guys, Manny could go on patrols in peace, knowing you are with a trusted person that would keep you safe, always.
"Sweetheart, you already know my answer. I got a house here. I'm fine. I am still able enough to do everythin' on my own. This metal ain't rusted yet", Joel responded with a hesitant smile, his eyes looked at the cherry blossom tree on his drive way, clearly avoiding contact.
He said the same thing in different variations, every time you asked. You knew he was too independent and proud to ask for help or accept help. But you also knew that softie appreciated it whenever he got it.
You frowned at the expected answer, as always, and he just laughed and leaned in to kiss your forehead carefully, before separating.
"Take your fiancé home, Alvarez", he looked at Manny, who nodded before giving Joel a close lipped smile.
You looked at Joel with tearful eyes, to which he simply cupped your cheek, his brown, sad eyes meeting with your own, before you made your way down the porch stairs, leaning closer to Manny's warmth for comfort.
-
"Does that still hurt?", Manny asked, his breath hitting against the skin of your ribs in an oddly soothing way, making you close your eyes in content as his fingers gently traced the bruise still visible.
"Mm, a bit when I breathe or move suddenly. This feels nice, though", you breathed out, referring to the warm and soft pads of his fingers caressing the wound. Manny chuckled before leaning in and pressing his lips oh so gently to the purplish part, making your breath hitch and cheeks heat up at the caring gesture, your eyes opened to look at the mess of curls with a sudden realisation.
He continued his ramble about finding solutions for your pain, picking up the cold compress and gently pressing it to your ribs, as you looked at him with funny eyes. "We'll go for a follow up soon, hm? I'll ask if a soak in the tub can help relieve the pain. And if we need to start any phy-"
"Let's get married."
It looked like Manny short circuited for a moment there. His hands hovered in the air, mouth fell open- giving you a glimpse at his cute crooked teeth, a stray curl fell over his forehead as he looked at you with furrowed eyes. "-sio- Huh?"
"Let's get married, babe", you repeated and linked your pinky with his, craving for some kind of contact.
"I- well, we will be, right? After you heal, yeah, we are getting married, angel", he replied, still confused, yet letting his pinky curl around yours immediately.
"No. I mean now. Let's go and get married, now, or tomorrow. I don't wanna wait", you looked up at him with twinkling eyes, slowly sitting up with his help, and he knew he was in trouble then.
"Amor, are you- you can't even walk without being in pain...I don't want you to be suffocated by pain on your special day. I'd never forgive myself", he softly debated, more concerned about your well-being than the fact that it was his special day too.
"It's your special day too, dummy. And it's fineeee, I can handle it. I've got so many people to look after me. Besides, I can't wait anymore. I want to be married to you as soon as possible so that I can officially call you husband", you tried again, lifting a hand up to brush those wayward curls away from his forehead.
He sighed in content before leaning into your touch.
"We've been apart for way too long, Manny. I don't want to waste time, not anymore. I don't...I don't want to have any regrets. I want to spent the rest of my life married to you, with a couple of little chubby babies running around our house while you try to catch them", you added with a wet smile on your face, eyes looking up at hi handsome face with so much hope.
Upon hearing your words, his pupils dilated. He wants to marry you so badly too. And he knows how badly the two of you want kids. The fact that he didn't have to hide his eagerness anymore was slowly making him ecstatic because his hands immediately snaked around your waist, nosing at your forehead in an attempt to get closer to you.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted to say that, angel."
Your fingers buried deeper in his curls.
"I've wanted that for us since the day we had our first kiss. I want the whole cliche. The domestic life. The white picket fence. The lazy days in bed. The rings on the fingers. The sleepless nights because the babies can't sleep. Introducing myself as your husband. Sharing my last name with you--all of it. I want all of it", he whispered shakily into your skin, clearly thinking about all the years you've been together, the trials and tribulations you had to go through, the separation and thinking that the either of you is dead--he's so grateful that life gave him a second chance.
You closed your eyes and felt a tear slip down your cheek, as if you could feel his thoughts and the pain that you'd felt across the years. Manny slowly separated the two of you so that he could look into your glossy eyes with his own. His hands came up to cup your face into them, thumbs wiping the streak of tear away with tenderness.
"I just wanted to wait to let you heal but--yeah. Let's get married, baby. Let's do it. Now, Tonight, Tomorrow--any day that you want to. Make me your husband", he smiled tearfully, making you let out a shaky chuckle before nudging your noses together and kissing him deeply.
-
The two of you called the family over. Joel, Ellie, Tommy and Maria were all gathered in your living room as you told them that you want to get married as soon as possible.
None of them were shocked, except Ellie who made a gagging face before Joel told her to be nice. They congratulated you both and immediately got to work, bringing out their diaries and pens to write down the guest list and what are the things that would be required for the decor, your preferred cake flavour, the dinner menu and so on.
Manny let you handle the reins, completely. He let you decide everything, right from the decor to the dessert. He wanted you to have something to look forward to since you have been holed up in the house for a week. He of course helped you out, he was nothing if not resourceful and whipped about you. He made sure that he went to Nonna's and gave the order for your cake and your favourite treats. He helped make the flower decorations and set the main table for your dinner. He helped clean the halls of the small church of the commune where the wedding would take place, he did all of the heavy lifting, still being a helicopter parent about your rest.
He had help from Maria, who had taken it upon herself to make sure you had the most perfect day ever. She helped out with your outfit, the meal prep, she handmade special flower crowns for you and Manny, which she had been keeping hidden from you to surprise you, Tommy and Joel personally went around the town to invite people, paying special attention to those who were close to you and Manny.
Ellie and Dina were tasked with keeping you company. They were your bridesmaids--along with Maria who was your maid of honour-- and they made sure not a single request of yours was ignored. Dina was going to help you with the make up and hair since you still had difficulty raising your arms and sitting straight for too long, and Ellie was helping you stay hydrated and fed.
Everyone wanted to pitch in for your wedding.
The thought itself was enough to make you cry. A few years ago, you were almost sure you'd die alone and away from Manny. You were sure you'd lost Manny. But now? You had a family. You had someone you could call a father, you had sisters, a mother figure, people you could rely on and call your own, and of course, you had your heart--your Manny, with you.
You didn't even realise you'd been crying when suddenly a warm hand encompassed your damp cheek in it, your eyes blinking absently before looking up to see Manny's worried face looking down at you, his other hand coming up to wipe the tears from your other cheek.
"What's wrong, angel? Are you in pain?', he asked gently before sitting down in front of you on your shared couch. It was just 2 days before the wedding and he'd been working around the house to tidy it up, so that it makes it easier for you to find things and so that the house looks good on an important day like your wedding. He knew you liked keeping the house neat and tidy and were upset that you were not able to pay much attention to the cleanliness of it.
The thought made your throat swell up again, his sheer thoughtfulness and care for you rendering you emotional. You shook your head before letting out a sob, sniffling harshly when he carefully brought you closer, helping you lean against his sweater clad shoulder.
"Baby...what's wrong?", he cooed, a hand brushing away stray hair so that he could see you better.
"You're so nice to me. Cleaning up everything and running around for the wedding. I just", you managed to choke out before inhaling shakily and crying into his sweater again, the fabric muffling the sound and your tears wetting it.
Manny's shoulders shook with a quiet chuckle, surprised but endeared by your reaction. "You deserve the best, angel. This is the least I could do."
"No-- I", you breathed out before sitting up and facing him, his hands sliding up from your shoulders to your face again to wipe at your soft, damp skin, a fond smile stretching his lips. You pushed your hair behind your ears before sniffling again.
"I just, I feel so useless sitting around doing nothing, and everyone is working while I'm sitting here because I can't even move. But at the same time, I am so grateful that I have everyone to help me, like I can't believe I have family who wants to help me out on my wedding, and-and there's people in the town who are genuinely excited to witness it. And there's you, you're so sweet and caring...I feel so grateful and happy", your words were jumbled and you were kind of rambling, but Manny understood every bit of it, his heart swelling with love because he could totally understand what you were feeling right now.
"I've troubled you way too much in the first half of our lives...this is the least I could do for you. And this is half of what you deserve. I want this to be a new beginning for us, where you get to experience every little thing you want to and I will be there, right next to you", his voice had softened impossibly, his eyes were glassy with unshed tears making you pause and look at him in awe. He'd gotten much better at voicing out his emotions and it always caught you off guard.
He cleared his throat before continuing, his thumbs rubbing circles on your cheeks. "..and maybe we'd be surrounded by pequeños monstruos of our own, running around and causing chaos."
That made the two of you burst out in giggles, your forehead pressed to his chin and arms wound around each other in an embrace. He lips pressed to your hairline thoughtfully as he swallowed thickly, preparing himself to bare it all.
"So, thank you for accepting me back. For forgiving me. For giving me a second chance", his voice had wavered by the end, and you knew it took a lot of strength for him to say it, so instead of making it bigger than it is, you simply hugged him tighter and whispered an 'I love you' into his skin, closing your eyes when you felt a wet spot hit the top of your head.
-
It was finally the day.
The entire week of resting had done wonders for you. Resting helps you heal quicker, shocker! But yes, the doctor had given you clearance and told you that while you still can't pick up heavy things, you can walk and sit with minimal pain now, and you only had to ice your injuries, all of the heavy dosage medicines were finally cut short.
That alone was enough to put you in a better mood on the d-day.
The church hall was ready. Every corner of it was decorated in local flowers, the smell of delicious food and warm pastries by Nonna floated inside the venue, the backs of the wooden chairs' were wrapped in different cloths of Manny and your favourite colours (Joel's idea), the altar held a board that had a collage of polaroids of you, Manny and your family (Tommy's idea), there was a counter for drinks and a stage for the musical instruments and a small music syste, and the aisle was decorated in cherry blossom petals.
Since they obviously didn't have any of the fancier wedding decorations, they had to make do with the naturally available materials or DIY. Which is why the venue had a lot of flowers, branches, table decorations sculpted by Joel, handmade gifts made by Dina and lots of paper made decor, paired with some candles and fairy lights.
The entire town was in attendance. The hall was packed with chatter, the kitchen was busy and the Millers were running everywhere to make themselves available and cater to everyone's need. Dina helped you get ready. You wore a simple but pretty outfit, one that was luckily in your favourite colour, your make up was minimal but enhanced your features, hair tied up in a beautiful manner, your engagement ring and a pair of traded earrings were your choice of your jewelry, and for the finishing touch, Dina placed the flower crown made out of cherry blossoms and rocky mountain columbines on top of your head.
It wasn't like the stereotypical Christian wedding get up, but you and Manny were neither stereotypical, nor Christian. This was more like you two and your story- Different.
And besides, this was already more than what others could afford to have in an apocalypse. You couldn't be more grateful.
Dina stepped back and let you look at yourself in the mirror. You couldn't help the soft gasp that left your mouth.
It'd been a long time since you saw yourself in anything other than the hand me downs and old clothes that you had, rarely putting extra effort in your appearance other than your hair. But this? This was special.
"Look at you...you're glowing. Tan Hermosa", Dina squealed and squeezed your shoulder, her bright smile making you smile shyly at her through the mirror.
She was right. The word you were looking for was glowing. You were glowing. You don't remember seeing yourself like this since...since forever.
"I know that idiot is going to pass out when you walk down the aisle", she teased you, laughing when you narrowed your eyes at her jokingly.
"Hey! That idiot is going to be my husband."
"Yeah, unfortunately", she snorted, making you laugh and squeeze her hands, your smile slowly fading as it sunk in.
Husband. Marriage. You're really getting married. While the whole world is still fighting against the cordyceps, you're here, laughing and smiling and getting ready to get married.
The smile was wiped off your face as those same thoughts haunted you again.
Was this the right move? Did it make you selfish and a privileged prick? How could you have fun today when there's people out there who probably need your help. How could you pull everyone out of their duties and patrols just for your own selfish need?
You slowly felt the bile rise up your throat, the guilt and overthinking making you sick. You were about to get up and leave when the sound of knocking broke your trance. Dina and you turned around to look at at the door, only to find Joel peeking through it.
"Am I too early?", he asked.
"Nope! We're done. Do take a look at your child and let me know if I did a good job", Dina beckoned him in with a flourish of her hands, as if she was presenting you. You rolled your eyes at her antics, Joel chuckling before letting himself in and closing the door behind him.
When he got a proper look at you, he couldn't help but flash a rare, huge dimpled smile, his eyes welling up with joy. "You look nice", he complimented, trying to keep it lowkey but the waver in his voice said otherwise.
You smiled shyly again, your eyes welling up on their own accord as he came closer to hold your hands before raising a hand to gingerly place it on your head, as if he was blessing you.
Dina smiled wetly, always having a soft spot for Joel and how he was always meant to be a father, and how caring and loving he was, even though he tried his best to not show it. "I'll...let you guys talk. Will be back to call you before the music begins, okay?", she gave you a wet smile, squeezing Joel's arm before excusing herself, the door clicking shut behind her.
"You clean up alright too, old man", you sniffled and pointed at his charming shirt and coat combo, his hair trimmed and fluffed in all their curly and silver fox glory, his beard perfectly trimmed like always, and his glasses making him look distinguished and adorable.
He scoffed in response, hiding his warm cheeks by looking at your joined hands and cleared his throat. "Don't think of anythin' else today, hm? Just have fun. Live in the moment. Everything that you'll see today is made for you. For you to love, for you to look at, for you to enjoy. Don't let unnecessary thoughts ruin it for you."
You looked up at him with a gaped mouth. "How did you.."
"I know my kid well", Joel simply shrugged with a smirk, making you chuckle in disbelief at how in tune you were with each other. In another life, you'd know each other forever.
He raised a hand to wipe under your eyes, making you frown because you didn't realise you were even crying. "None of that, c'mon."
"It's because of you", you sniffled and punched his shoulder, referring to his glassy eyes and thin voice.
He opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted by the door opening, Ellie's head popping in this time, along with Dina.
"Hey--whoa, you look amazing! Can I see-", Ellie excitedly began before she was pulled back slightly by Dina.
"Let them come out first. Guys, they've started the music. It's time", Dina gently reminded you all, to which Joel and you replied with a nod.
You let out a deep breath, squeezing Joel's hands out of nerves. "I...I'm nervous. And scared. And...I just...I feel so guilty. Doing this while everyone else outside the commune is still suffering...", you whispered with a deep frown on your lips, making Joel smile fondly. You cared too much to ever put your own happiness before others.
He knew that long back when you were ready to leave Manny behind for Ellie.
"You've been giving up your comfort for your entire life. Take this one day to be selfish. And if anybody tries to object, I'll take care of them myself", Joel reassured in his softest voice.
"And we will join you!", came the overlapped voices of Ellie and Dina from the doorway, all four of you erupting in chuckles as you looked up at Joel with a smile and a nod. Being selfish for this one day wouldn't hurt, right? If you were to die tomorrow, at least you'd die with no regrets.
The three of them smiled, Joel bent his elbow for you to grab, Ellie handed you the beautiful bouquet to hold, and the four of you made your way downstairs, the sound of the music getting louder and louder with each step.
-
Manny was sweating his ass off.
Not because it was summer, oh no, it was a beautiful spring day, the perfect weather for a wedding really. The snow was melting off, the flowers were in bloom, the birds and butterflies were back, the wind was the perfect amount of cold.
Manny was sweating because it was almost time. The music has started playing. The people were settling down, Tommy, Maria and Benji slowly made their way near the altar, the chatter quieted down while everyone turned in their seats in anticipation of you walking down, the officiant, who was an ex pastor who had joined the community recently, had settled behind Manny with a paper in his hands, and Manny was pulling at his coat sleeves out of nervousness.
He kept adjusting his hair, which he had not styled in any way because you preferred it to be loose and curly, but he was mindful of the flower crown, one that Maria had made as a matching pair for you two, his shirt's top buttons were open, and yet he felt suffocated, because there was a huge lump stuck in his throat that he was afraid was going to make him burst out in tears any moment. He wasn't getting cold feet, no. This was the most sure he's felt in his life.
He was just emotional. Overwhelmed. He couldn't believe this was his life now. That he got you back. That you accepted him back, and now he gets to be your husband. He gets to share his last name with you, he gets to have a home and children with you. Gone were the days where he'd try his hardest to forget you and mercilessly kill people as a coping mechanism. Gone were the days where he'd throw up out of worry for you, and when he'd lose sleep out of the nightmares that plagued him that one day, he'd stumble upon your motionless body or worse, he'd have to kill your infected self.
The music swelled as everyone turned towards the doors of the hall. Manny bit the inside of his cheek, his left hand grasping his right wrist so tight that he felt it in his bones, his legs were shaking and he almost thought he was going to fall when he felt a warm, solid hand on his back.
He looked back and noticed Tommy next to him, who simply gave him an understanding smile and patted his back, as if he was saying 'I understand how you feel. I got you.' Maria gave him the same friendly smile.
Manny nodded at the older couple, his eyes shining with gratitude, and suddenly the doors of the hall opened, making Manny whip his head around. He could faintly see Nonna Lucy wipe her tears with her napkin, Elina and her parents looked on with proud smiles, the little baby clapping her chubby hands together, and a ripple of 'Aw's' and gasps took over the crowd.
Weddings were rare, but celebrated weddings were rarer and everyone was pleased to see a couple coming together for their love, and getting a chance to witness it. There was not a single dry eye as you descended down the aisle, Joel's hand gently encompassing yours, your eyes trained towards Manny, who was now covering his mouth to conceal his sobs. Tommy smiled wetly and rubbed the younger man's shuddering shoulders, Maria wiping her own tears while Benji held her hand close to his chest.
You were biting your lip to suppress the big, shaky smile threatening to burst out, Joel sneakily pretending to scratch his eye but really, he was wiping the tear that was about to fall down. Ellie and Dina stood below the altar, making way for you to go up, Joel holding you close for a moment, his aged hands gently adjusting the flower crown on your head before giving you a wink, making you giggle softly. He stood next to Ellie, turning around to wipe his eyes and felt a smaller hand grasp his, making him look down in surprise at Ellie.
She looked ahead at you climbing up the altar, Joel swallowed his emotion and held her hand tighter before looking back at you.
Manny wiped his tears quickly, finally getting a good look at your radiant face before offering you his hand, gently pulling you up to stand next to him, his swollen eyes taking your new look in. All he could think about, was how lucky he was.
God, you were so beautiful.
He was a fucking asshole who had made too many mistakes and crimes in his life, but somehow...somehow the universe thought he deserved you and he won't lie and say he's not glad. Did you deserve him? No. Was he glad you chose him and no one else? Fuck yes. When you looked at him like that with those bright eyes, everything else ceased to exist. He was fully yours.
You were too mesmerised to even speak. He looked extra handsome today. Manny was blessed with a beautiful face but today? with his misty eyes, red nose, damp cheeks, loose curls and that flower crown? You've never seen a man more gorgeous.
"You look so beautiful~", both of you whispered out loud, making the altar burst out in surprised laughs, the two of you jumping before ducking your heads shyly. You shared eye contact through your lashes, his hands squeezing yours before caressing your ring before the officiant spoke up.
"Okay, just a few minutes and we will be out of your hair", he joked, making everyone chuckle before beginning the ceremony.
"Since we don't live normal lives anymore, this won't be the same normal speech either. First of all, I'd like to welcome everyone, to the beautiful union of these beloveds, who have overcome hurdles and tragedies, and stuck by each other's side to this day, and have taken the decision to step into a lifelong partnership of love, support and mutual devotion. They have chosen this day to publicly declare their love for one another, surrounded by family and friends, and the townspeople of Jackson to support them in this new journey."
You shared a loving smile with Tommy and Maria, while Manny turned around to nod gratefully at Joel and Ellie, which they returned.
The officiant began, "Emmanuel Alvarez, do you take [Name] Miller to be your lawfully wedded spouse?"
Manny looked at you with determination, his voice solid and sure, "I do."
You squeezed his hand.
"[Name] Miller, do you take Emmanuel Alvarez to be your lawfully wedded spouse?"
You look over at him again, sharing a smile full of love before declaring, "I do", sliding the ring over his finger with shaky hands.
Manny couldn't help it anymore and leaned over to plant a lingering kiss on your cheek, making everyone burst out in laughter again.
"Okay! Okay, young man, just a few more minutes!", the officiant slowly pushed him back with a disbelieving smile. Both of your cheeks warmed up in embarassment.
"Before we get a kiss, do you have any personal vows you want to share?", the officiant chuckled as Manny rubbed his neck impatiently.
Both Manny and you had decided to do your vows in person, with just the two of you. You weren't sure you were ready to talk about your most vulnerable moments in front of a crowd yet, and neither were a fan of the attention, so both of you denied the offer kindly.
"Very well, I respect your decision. By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you married! You may now kiss your spouse!", the officiant cheered, causing the hall to erupt in claps as Manny placed a hand on your waist, other hand on the nape of your neck, and carefully dipped you just enough to be romantic and not irritate your wounds, as he laid a passionate and deep kiss on your lips, making you squeal and wrap your arms around his neck, the hoots and claps of everyone making your ears warm, petals landing on you two as everyone showered you with flowers in celebration.
"Te quiero mucho, my angel", he murmured against your warm lips, his stray curls tickling your forehead lightly. You giggled and brought him closer, kissing him again as a reply, feeling incredibly loved, celebrated and safe in his arms and surrounded by the people you loved the most.
Ellie leaned against Joel's shoulder, subtly wiping her nose to hide her tears. Joel looked down and smiled, his vision blurry because of his own tears before leaning his head against Ellie's and extending his hand to rest over Dina's head lovingly, her own face damp with tears.
Tommy was rubbing Maria's back, Benji's tiny hands wiping her face of any tears while Tommy bit his lip hard to not break down.
It was a day where everyone could be happy and pretend that it was all okay, because your happiness shone so bright, they couldn't help but bask in the warmth of it.

3 years later
"Shhh, papa! You-You're gonna ruin the suhpwise!", a tiny, whispering voice scolded Manny while small, chubby fingers pressed on his lips to make sure no voice is let out. Manny raised his hands up, mouthing a 'sorry' to the little lady in front of him.
Four year old Esmeralda, or Esme, was exactly as her name. Vibrant and precious, for you, Manny and your family.
Manny and you had adopted her after a patrol run a few months after your wedding. She was a wee little thing, only an year old when you two found her, shivering and scared out of her mind, no responsible adult next to her except for a small basket full of a few clothes, a story book, hairbrush and her bottle. The sight of her broke you, the long lost memory of your parents being snatched away from you immediately paralysing you with emotion as you looked at her scared little body, bundled up in her blanket and broken cries leaving her mouth.
You see, Manny and you were planning to rest for the night in the house that you found her in. It was pretty intact, and big enough for 4 people to live in, but the winter was absolutely brutal that year and you could have been a hypothermia victim if you would've been outside in that snow storm. No wonder her cries weren't audible. The wind outside had been howling too loud for anybody, or any infected, to notice her inside.
When you took a scan of the rooms, you could hear some whimpering coming from the last room in the house, which made Manny's head snap around in alarm. He pushed you behind him and raised his rifle, sharp eyes trained at the door before he kicked it in, only to stop in his tracks and drop his rifle like it had burned him.
You had nudged him with your foot in urgency then, to which he simply stepped aside and let you look inside the room: a small, fussy bundle resting on the floor with that wicker basket next to it. You had let out a loud gasp, slowly following Manny as he crouched next to the mass of blankets, the whimpering getting clearer as the blanket fell of its face.
There she was. Her big brown eyes stared up at you two tearfully, her lips pouted and little forehead scrunched up as she chewed on her fingers out of nerves and hunger, both. You couldn't resist and slowly unwrapped her blanket, revealing her faded yellow pajamas and kicking feet, her curly hair was unruly, little face damp with tears and arms extending to make grabby hands, another tiny cry leaving her. The sight tugged at Manny's heart, his own hands coming up to hold the baby's gently while you blinked away tears, looking around to find any note.
There wasn't any, and based on her healthy condition, it looked like her parents or guardians were waiting for the right opportunity to leave as she would've been hypothermic in this cold if she was left here for longer. The fact made you frown harder as you thought about how desperate and helpless her parents must've been to keep her here alone, but safe, while risking their own lives.
"They must've been in trouble...must have left her here in hopes of someone finding her", Manny murmured as he looked around the room with sharp eyes, while you slowly picked up the babe, still wrapped in her blanket. Her crying stopped as soft whimpers left her tiny body, her hands grabbing the collar of your shirt for support as your stomach twisted with another bout of emotion and sadness.
You had always loved kids. Always wanted them. So did Manny. You couldn't help but feel protective over this little angel, who was unfortunately stuck in this mess. You'd never leave a child alone. So, you already knew what you were going to do. Looking into her glossy eyes, you felt a tear slide down your cheek, your free hand coming up to brush her curls back lovingly.
"We're taking her."
Was all that you'd said to Manny, who had stopped in his tracks, not out of surprise, but fondness. He knew you'd say that the moment he saw the baby girl. And he wasn't complaining. She'd had him wrapped around her chubby little finger the moment he kicked the door open.
That's how your Esme had become a part of your family. She was the apple of everyone's eye, especially her Papa's and Joel's, who she lovingly called Abue Jo. Ellie and Dina would eagerly look after her, little JJ becoming a close friend of Esme's and causing loads of trouble together, and they were usually led by Benji, who was as protective as Tommy and Maria were over her.
She was the light of your lives, and you don't think you've experienced such happiness before as you did when she called you Mama. Manny had spoiled her rotten and was teaching her Spanish, and you'd teach her everything necessary for survival, both of you helping her in anything and everything she needed, making sure she never experiences any kind of discomfort in this fucked up world.
Which brings us to today.
-
Today was Mother's Day, and while it was your 3rd Mother's Day with Esme, it was your first ever with the newest addition of the family- your baby boy Gabriel, or Gabi as you all had started calling him.
Gabi was not planned. At all. You had your hands full with Esme, and having one child was stressful enough in these conditions that Manny and you had not thought of another one. But Gabi was a result of a night with your husband and emotional decisions. And before you knew it, he was here, in your arms, all chubby limbs and hair identical to yours.
If Esme was Manny's twin, Gabi was yours. Which had made Joel cry when he first saw him because all he could remember was your face when you'd first entered Jackson on your horse. Joel carried Gabi's little body all night long, even if his back and shoulders protested against it.
Gabi was now 6 months old, super active and a babbling little brook, and it was his first ever Mother's Day with you.
Currently though? It was 10 am and you'd finally fallen asleep at around 4 after staying up with him, feeding him and soothing him as he had officially started teething. Poor baby was frustrated and in pain all night, and the only things that helped with milk or his teething rings. Manny had forced you to sleep, cradling the baby in his arms and giving him his bottle, but the anxiety and guilt would not let you sit still. You told Manny to sleep, which he did not do until you rested next to him.
And when you did, Manny's strong arms around the both of you instantly calmed things down. Gabi had finally fallen asleep on your chest, giving you some respite as well as making Manny heave a sigh of relief, his lips pressing to your head before Gabi's.
Manny had still woken up at 8 to rouse Esme. He'd been planning this for a week since he found out that Mother's Day will be approaching soon, and he knew he wanted to make it a special day for you, since you'd been so exhausted and hormonal after Gabi's birth. And who else than his little boss lady to help him out?
She was ready, always excited to do something for her Mama, and now her baby brother. She helped Manny out with the breakfast, which was your favourite, and helped him pluck the strawberries and tulips that she'd helped him plant in the backyard. She also helped him pour the coffee into your favourite mug, her tongue sticking out in concentration, and before they knew it--it was ready. The tray was decorated beautifully, the flowers set in a thin glass before Esme suddenly ran up to her room, leaving Manny stunned. She rushed down the stairs again, Manny shooting his arms out to slow her down and noticed a piece of paper in her hands.
"What's that baby? And don't run like that on the stairs, please. You're gonna fall and hurt yourself", he gently chided, picking her up against his hip.
"Sorry papa. I was looking for this!", she cutely apologised before shoving her paper in front of his eyes, the bright, squiggly stick figures of you, him, Esme and a small basket with another stick figure and floating head-Gabi-making him chuckle in adoration, his hand coming up to hold the paper.
"Aw, bebé, did you make this for mama?", he cooed, making her nod rapidly. Manny smiled brighter. "It's so amazing! They're gonna love it!"
Esme giggled shyly into his curls.
-
That brings them back to where they were standing outside your and Manny's shared bedroom, whispering amongst each other while Esme shushed Manny for talking too loud, making him pick up the tray before slowly turning the door handle, trying her best to be as quiet as a mouse.
The door opened and Manny let out a content sigh at what he saw. Half of his entire world was right there in front of him, feeling safe enough that they could sleep so soundly, they didn't even hear the dull thuds of Esme’s footsteps, which were slowly making their way towards the bed.
He chuckled softly, her excitement making it harder for him to tell her to slow down. He slowly entered the room with the full tray in his hands, carefully setting it on his side of the bed. Esme was already climbing on it, Manny gently held her by the waist to make sure she didn’t spill anything on the tray while she patted your cheek lightly, in the uncoordinated way children do.
“Mama. Mamaa~…The sun has waked up…when will you…”, she whispered loudly, making Manny hold his laughter in while using his free hand to brush your hair back, making sure not to disturb the sleeping bundle on your arms.
You let out a deep sigh, your arms tightening around Gabi slightly, legs stretching under the blanket as your eyes squinted while slowly opening up.
Esme gasped. "Mama!! Hiiii!", her hands still patting your cheeks, making you smile sleepily.
"Mmm, who is it? Is it my Esme-Sesame?", you mumbled, cracking one bleary eye open, to which Esme replied with dissolving into squeaky giggles. She always felt tickled by the nicknames you and Manny gave her, bursting into laughter as if you'd cracked the joke of the millennium, but really she was just expressing how much she adored them.
You opened your eyes with a bright smile, meeting Manny's own doe eyes over her curls. "Good morning, mami. Happy Mother's Day. We have a small surprise for you", Manny leaned forward to give you a soft kiss, which you sleepily returned, feeling all warm and comfy in the bed surrounded by your favourite people.
"Someone has been bossing me around since 8 am, by the way", he murmured against your lips, making you chuckled before he separated from you.
"Mama, Happy Mama's Day!", Esme squealed and pointed her small arms towards the full tray next to you.
"Someone has been bossing me around since 8 am for this, by the way", he murmured against your lips, making you chuckle before he separated from you.
You let out a soft gasp as you looked at the tray and attempted to sit up, a hand supporting Gabi's back while the other helped you push up from the mattress. Manny took the moment to gently take Gabi from your arms.
The feeling of your arms being freed from the weight and same position over night was amazing, softly groaning as you stretched them to get rid of the pins and needles. God, you underestimate how heavy babies actually are. Manny cradled the little sleeping bundle in the crook of his arms, a fond smile stretching his lips as he lovingly ran his palm over Gabi's round head, his nose leaning in to take his baby smell in.
Thankfully he was a good sleeper, so you two never worried about his sleep cycle being disturbed by noise.
You looked at the tray full of food and the tulips from your backyard and pressed a hand to your chest, feeling your heart overflow with emotion. Pouting at Esme and your husband, you extending your arms for Esme to climb in, who eagerly scooted closer until she was sitting on your lap, her head leaned against your neck.
"Awww, thank you, my baby. You did all this for me?", you squeezed your daughter before leaning your head to look at her, and when she nodded with a cheesy smile, you pressed a loud smooch against her head, making her giggle again.
"Hey, what about us?", Manny frowned in exaggeration, bringing Gabi closer to his face, whose eyes were now open wide, making grabby hands at Esme as soon as he saw, snorting and huffing in excitement.
Esme responded with a "Good mowning baby!" and grabbed his hands, smiling at the way he kicked his legs, ready to crawl all over the house.
"I helped, too. And little man cuddled you while we were gone, didn't you, Gabe?", he cooed to the baby, who responded with loud babbles of his own, making Manny press a smooch to his chubby cheek.
Your chest swelled at the scene, like it has been for the last three years at anytime all of you were together.
It feels like you've lived a hundred lives since you left the WLF. Manny and you have been through so much shit, that you'd both already given up and resorted to a life of loneliness, sadness or violence. Maybe even death. But now?
You had a house. You had a family. You had each other. You had 2 beautiful kids. God knows what you did to deserve all this, both of you have done some pretty gnarly shit to just survive. But maybe, somewhere along the line, the universe or god or whatever energy out there thought that you'd suffered enough, and sent all these angels your way, thought you were worthy of being a guardian to these sweet babies, who were the best gifts of your life.
Manny's eyes met yours and his breath hitched at the emotion in your eyes. He knew exactly what you were thinking, because he spends eevryday thinking about the same.
For Manny you'd been his angel for his entire life. He had no one. Yeah, he had his friends and his dad, but you? You were his soulmate. His other half. He knows he's going to hell for the pain he's caused others and how he abandoned you. But somehow, you still thought he was worthy enough to be your husband and the father of your kids, and he's forever grateful for that. He'd promised himself that he'd go to any lengths to protect his little family.
Manny scooted closer to you, both of your babies tucked safely in between you two, his hand cradling your damp cheek in it, your lip quivering as you leaned against it.
"Thank you for this", you whispered shakily against his skin, a wet smile on your face as your hand came up to brush his curls back. He closed his eyes before leaning his forehead against you, his nose nudging against yours.
"No. I should thank you. Thank you for having me, letting me be with you and know you, and for letting me be their dad. You deserve all of this and more. I love you so much, mi vida", he said before swallowing thickly, his thumb rubbing soothing circles on your cheek.
Your hand slid down to the nape of his neck, pressing him closer as you shook your head against his. "We deserve this. All of that is in the past. Now we are free to turn gray and wrinkly together. I love you. We love you, Manny."
He clenched his jaw to stop the sob from escaping before pressing his lips to yours again, it was a loving and reassuring kiss, his hand tenderly holding your face like you were precious, both of your tears and shaky smiles pressed against each other.
A small hand patted his cheek, breaking you both apart to look at Gabi's gummy smile paired with Esme's grimace. "Ewww, close your eyes, Gabi!"
You laughed out loudly, pressing a hand to your mouth as Manny gasped.
"Oh really, is that icky for you, Miss Alvarez? Is it still icky when I do this", he leaned to press a series of kisses on her face, making her scream and burst out in laughter, Gabi joining in with his own screeching baby laughs, leaning his head on your lap as his little body shook with giggles.
You looked on with teary eyes and a big smile, your body alight with joy at your family's happiness as they became a mess of limbs and laughs on the bed.
The breakfast was long forgotten, as your bellies were full with love and sunshine, because after way too long, you were finally happy.
And you finally saw the Daylight.

Say what you want about 13 reasons why, but the relationship between Clay and Justin, from hating each other to becoming brothers, was the best thing about the show and it was totally worth watching four seasons just for them.
“Will you hold my hand, Bro?” “They have a bond thicker than blood” “He’s my brother, my positive influence”
Justin and Clay were the best relationship on 13RW and I will fight anyone on that. Their development was top teir. They ended up carrying the whole show. There is no 13RW without them. It started with them and ended with them.
My biggest ick when it comes to movie and TV tropes, when they give abusers redemption arc instead of giving the victim an incredible arc. Because in real life, Abusers will never change. I know that tv and movies are meant to be an escape from reality, but there are times when they still ground itself in reality itself.
Writing about an abuser or a rapist and having them show remorse and be taken hold accountable does sound good on paper. But the redemption arc is out of the left field. Many times, when it watches or hears, the fictional abuser decides to change himself. The damage has already been done. For example, Endeavour realised his wrongdoings and how he treated Rei and the kids after he ended up being Number 1. After All Might retired as number 1 hero, Endeavour surpasses, which is something he is determined to do, but when he gets it. It felt like it was nothing.
You could argue that Endeavour's obsession with All Might was the main reason why he chose to abuse his kids. But I don't think that's a good reason why to change because Endeavour had a lot of time to reflect on his actions towards his family. But it didn't start until he became the number 1 hero.
The way people treat Rei is very despicable because many will find to blame Rei and try to defend Endeavour. Yes, Rei married him. Yes, she chose to have children with him. But she didn't choose to be abused or didn't want her kids to abuse or neglect. I think that Rei was optimistic about the marriage and believed that they could work out. Yes, she wanted to have another kid. But I think she was fine with just having two. It seems as though Touya was born as a duty, while Fuyumi was born out of respect. It felt like she was given the choice when it came to having kids. While she probably did have a choice to have Natsuo and Shoto, It didn't feel like it was 100% her choice.
Yet, people like to say that she was the aggressor in the relationship. I hear over again whenever Victim snaps and does something due to the abuse and trauma they suffer. When Rei burned Shoto, she was in a severely bad state. She also immediately tries to heal him.
People act like Endeavour's treatment towards his family wasn't as bad as many claim it was. So, Endeavour neglects Touya by not helping him with quirk or even trying to find any research about. Telling a kid to stop using his quirk isn't enough, in my opinion. Endeavour already saw Touya as a failure. The minute the doctor said that, his quirk leaned towards the mother. Not mentioned he neglected Natsuo and Fuyumi, than when he gets his masterpiece of Shoto. Shoto goes through so much harsh training. On a few occasions, when he abused Rei through physical or mental.
By saying that, it was Rei's responsibility involving Touya. I'm sorry, but why should it only be Rei's responsibility that Touya doesn't hurt himself? Why is that? Because his quirk is in more in line with hers, even though she probably has never seen a blue fire quirk except the fire whom she is married to. Touya wants attention from the parent who sees him as a failure and won't even bother to help him. Yet, I hear fans defend this kind of action.
Another example of letting bad people have redemption arcs even though they don't deserve it is Bryce Walker from 13 reasons why. Bryce Walker raped and assaulted many girls at school, and one of them ended up committing suicide. In Season 3, they decide to give Bryce Walker this supposed redemption arc. Where he tries to be a better person. But that doesn't end well because Bryce deliberately injures Zach because Zach has been seeing his ex. Which shows any ounce of empathy that Bryce ever had with the people whom he hurt is not there.
It's crazy to me how Clay calls out on people like Justin or Ani who defend Bryce by saying things like, "He's still a person. He wanted to be a better person. " whenever Clay points out that he was also rapist who raped Justin's then girlfriend, Jessica, and even wasn't a great friend to Justin himself. If Bryce wanted to prove that he changed, then he should've reported the crimes himself to the police. But he doesn't do that. Because rapists like Bryce don't want to hold themselves accountable.
If I had a nickel for every time a Netflix show killed off (a) major character(s), who had been abused most of their life in the season four finale I’d have three nickels. Which isn’t much but would definitely be more if Netflix shows got renewed…
tv shows need to STOP killing off the kids that come from abuse, the message that it sends is fucked up!!! (sorry for any spoilers but all these shows have been out long enough now)
got reminded that I used to watch 13rw and this just made me upset again.
fuck the creators of 13rw and stranger things. everytime I think about justin my heart breaks. he finally had a family and was getting better only for the fuckass writers to kill him off. it makes me so upset that he was truly the light of the Jensen’s’ house and they took it away. he deserved a second chance.
and don’t even remind me of el. Poor baby girl. She deserved to live happily with hopper and mike. And so did Eddie deserve to live a life of dignity with his friends and uncle wayne.
