whats shambles?
A shamble (or shambles) is a magical object from the Discworld book series by Sir Terry Pratchett. They were introduced in "The Wee Free Men," the first book in the Tiffany Aching cycle.
Shambles are used by witches for a variety of magical uses. They can detect or amplify magic, send a spell, protect a dwelling, or really whatever is needed. (Some shambles are also purely decorative, because a proper witch ought to maintain a certain level of ambience. Unless, of course, your name is Esmerelda Weatherwax, in which case the darn things just get in the way.)
There are no hard and fast rules as to what EXACTLY a shamble should look like, or even what it should be made of, only that it must be able to hang like a wind chime and must contain something living (or once-living) at the center).
A capable Discworld witch should be able to put together a shambles from whatever materials are at hand and the most powerful and effective shambles are the ones you make when there is the greatest need for them. It's all about capturing the moment and following one's intuition and sense of need during the construction.
I may or may not have had shambles in mind when I created the tutorial for Witch Webs for one of my books, but they certainly capture the same feeling - a woven hanging with no definite pattern which can include whatever feels right and may be used for whatever purpose one has need for at the time. Plus they make fabulous decorations.
Simple Spell - Full Moon Wish Jar
Intent: To harness the power of the lunar cycle for the manifestation and fulfillment of wishes.
Materials:
Small Jar with tight-fitting lid
Chime candle & fire source
Oil for sealing
Herbs and Items representing your wish
Ideal Timing: Waxing or Full Moon
Find a clear space to work. Make sure it’s free of fire hazards. If possible, try to work near a window through which you can see the moon. (If you don’t have one, that’s all right too, since you’ll be setting the jar out for the moonlight when finished.) Light your candle, focus your intentions, and get to work.
Select herbs and trinkets which fit inside the jar to represent your wish. For example, if your wish is for money or prosperity, you might include coins or small craft gems. If your wish is for health, you might include vitamin pills or a charm representing medicine. Check your books for herbs or crystals that correspond to your wish as well. This is your wish - make the spell your own. The contents of the jar can be whatever you want.
Use the materials that resonate best with you, but remember that your focused intention is the most important component of all. If desired, you can write your wish on a dried leaf or a piece of paper to give the spell a clear direction to work in.
Some common plants associated with wish-making include:
Bamboo
Bay Leaf
Blue Violet
Dandelion Seeds
Dogwood Petals
Nutmeg
Peppermint
Sage Leaf (any color)
Sunflower Petals or Seeds
Once your jar is complete, drip three drops of wax from the candle into the jar and circle the mouth of the jar three times with the oil to seal the charm. Then cap the jar and seal it with wax. Leave your thumbprint in wax on top of the lid. Place the jar somewhere that it will be touched by the light of the full moon and leave it overnight.
The jar should work for about a month, or slightly longer if you’re working with a supermoon. When the next full moon rolls around, you can recharge the jar by leaving it out overnight again, or make a new jar with a new wish.
Recipe suggestions under the cut. (And if you like this spell, you'll love my books!)

Your goal should be to get weirder with age and im not kidding. Become that odd estranged extended family member that owns a whacky home wherein a powerful magical item is kept that is the catalyst for the story of a children's adventure novel protagonist
Because it is the anniversary of his death, I wanted to share a small story about my grandfather.
Before I knew that I was intersex, I identified as a trans man. And I went the way any trans man has to go if he wants to transition in my country. My parents thankfully were supportive but I was afraid to tell my grandparents. My grandparents were German and lived/were raised during the third reich. While both of them never said or acted in a way that suggested that they had fascist views (my grandfather was until he died part of a leftwing political party), but there still was this fear in me. "They are old, they grew up surrounded by abhorrent beliefs...". And then there was my aunt. Who would constantly claim that my grandfather was homophobic.
The problem was, back then, there were no openly out gay people in our area, so I never got the chance to see my grandfather interact with someone who was queer. So I just believed her. Because she was so insistent on it. And because it confirmed my fears and my brain loves to be constantly afraid.
But I knew I wanted to come out. I had to, eventually, because I had stopped my estrogen treatment (back then, I did not know that I got that because I was intersex) and went on testosterone instead and first physical changes began to show. We all lived in one big house, so my grandparents would eventually notice.
I was so afraid that my father at some point offered to talk to his parents. I waited outside in the hallway that led to their kitchen and listened.
My father explained, easy to understand, that I was going to transition from female to male because I felt terrible in my body. My grandfather asked, "Is that why the child* is so depressed all this time?" I had been in and out of multiple clinics for manic depression at that point. My father gave a yes. And my grandmother made the incredibly selfish comment, "Can't that wait until I am dead?"
Before I even got time to be upset, my grandfather slammed his fist down on the table. I had never seen or heard him do anything like that before. He was a very calm and collected man who preferred to leave the room before he got too angry. "No, it can't wait. The child gets to get well now. And if that is what is going to help, then it needs to be done."
From that day on, he never used my deadname again or used the wrong pronouns for me. Sometimes, he would stop in a sentence to think and remind himself, but he did always address me correctly.
He celebrated with me when my name was legally changed. He built the bed frame for me and my boyfriend's bed when we moved in together, just like he had built the first adult sized bedframe for me when I outgrew my small bed. He drove my boyfriend to his chemo sessions because my grandfather also had cancer and knew how terrifying it was to go alone.
Did he fully understand what it means to be intersex? To transition? No. But he understood that one of his loved ones was suffering and that he could help to alleviate that pain. And so he did.
He taught me calligraphy. He taught me how to sew. He taught me bookbinding. He gave me many gifts.
But the biggest gift he gave me was, that when someone hated me for what I am, I could stomach it. Because this man was willing to unlearn the bigotry he had been taught for decades so he could love me for who I am.
*in my grandpa's dialect it was normal to refer to children as just 'the child' (genderless)
What a wonderful grandpa.
I don't normally post photos or talk about the protest actions I participate in, but I was at the Chicago Stand Up For Science rally on behalf of my job recently and this sign took me out at the knees.

Magical Oil Recipes - Glamour Edition
For anyone looking to brew up some magic related to glamours, confidence, physical appearance, or eloquence, here are some recipes I’ve created that you might find useful.
To prepare them, blend the ingredients in such proportions as feels correct for your purposes (or as supplies allow). Use dried material except where indicated. Place a few spoonfuls in a mason jar with a screwtop lid and fill the jar with a bland oil of your choice. (Vegetable oil of the sort you would buy for cooking works fine.) Screw the lid on tightly and shake well to combine, then leave the jar in a dark dry place for 2-4 weeks to steep.
Once steeped, prepare a clean storage bottle (also with a secure lid) and label with the type of oil and the bottling date. Strain the oil through paper towels or cheesecloth to remove the plant material, then bottle immediately. Store away from sunlight and heat for up to one year. Use for spellwork as you see fit.
(Please note that NONE of these potions are meant to be taken internally by any means. Observe all proper safety measures related to glass, fire, and potentially harmful plants as necessary during preparation.)

I know you've said that the ideal timing for the Roughskin spell is a full moon, but since the idea is to hide from harm and the moon is hiding soon (eclipse) I'm gonna try it out then! Just thought I'd share ^-^
Now THAT'S using celestial timing to your advantage!
Generally speaking, a full moon is the ideal timing for a protection spell, but lunar timing is very much a guideline as opposed to a hard and fast rule. I know plenty of witches who would argue that the ideal timing for the Roughskin spell is a new moon, due to the need for concealment, and they'd have an excellent point.
I think the use of a lunar eclipse for this purpose is a power move and you should run with it. Way to think outside the box!
(For anyone interested, the spell is here and there are kits available in my shop if you need components. The lunar eclipse will be Friday March 14th.)
The TikTok Benadryl + ibuprofen ‘trend’ to treat anaphylaxis is distressing on multiple levels because it shows not only a blatant disregard for medical information but also how a little bit of information applied the wrong way can have disastrous effect.
The spiel I kept seeing from one creator whose videos I now can’t find (please god let it be because she got taken down and not simply because she blocked me) was that allergic reactions are an inflammatory response.
Which is correct! It is an exaggerated immune response to a foreign substance that can lead to swelling at the sight of exposure.
However, not all inflammation it treated the same way and leaning towards the camera to say, “now, this is what doctors don’t want you to know,” as you explain that Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory—which it is, you are again correct on that point—and then urging people to use it as a cost effective way to treat allergic inflammation is going to get people killed because no!!! No, no, no!!!
Different inflammation pathways are active.
The ibuprofen might reduce swelling and pain from a bug bite but it’s not blocking the allergic response of the immune system. In fact it may make it worse because as I already noted in my previous post, ibuprofen can liberate basophil cells which are also liberated from mast cells during allergic responses.
Telling people to combine it with Benadryl only further risks the chance of mortality because Benadryl only treats some allergic mediators, and cannot reverse anaphylaxis once it’s started, and as I also previously pointed out can mask symptoms of shock because it can make you sleepy.
Just because something is cheap and readily accessible doesn’t mean it’s safe for you to concoct your own treatment for serious ailments based on the most basic surface level understanding of word definitions.
Inflammation has many mediators. You can’t nod and wink at the camera like you’ve hacked big pharma when you don’t understand that.
FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG KIDS IN THE US!
Someone over on bluesky posted this and I figured I'd better repost it here. It's the pre-RFK 2025 vaccination schedule for babies and young children, ya know, just in case it mysteriously disappears. Save this and give it to your child's pediatrician; tell them this is the schedule you want your child on.
Bree, do you have an spell or spell ingredient recommendations to make bureaucracy go faster? As in, cut a processing wait time down from two years to a year or something along those lines?
Thanks for your help!
UGH, bureaucracy. I'm so sorry things are snarled up for you at the moment, but I think there are a few recipes from Pestlework that might help!
For the oils, combine 1 part herb blend with 2 parts bland oil of choice in a glass jar with a tight lid. (I recommend vegetable oil as a default if you need something that's easy to find.) Leave about an inch of air at the top to allow room for shaking. Cap the jar tightly, label it with the contents and date, and leave it in a warm dry place or a sunny windowsill to steep for no less than two weeks. Shake the jar daily to help the infusion process along.
Once it's ready, strain the oil through paper towels or cheesecloth into a clean container, label and date, and store somewhere cool and dry for up to a year. (If it ever starts to grow mold or smell rancid or sour, discard it.)
Jump-Start Catalyst Oil To give events in motion a "jump" to move things along
Bergamot
Peppermint
Cinnamon Stick
Posthaste Catalyst Oil For when it absolutely, positively has to happen on-schedule
Bergamot
Cardamom**
Ginger Root
Sandalwood or Amber Oil
Catalyst Spice Powder To get things moving when they are stubborn or stagnant.
Ingredients:
1 pt Allspice
1 pt Cinnamon
1 pt Cloves
1 pt Ginger
This powder can be used to increase the vitality or speed with which a spell works, or to trigger or accelerate change. Use in spellwork to set off certain effects or events, or to expedite an event. This powder can also be used to enhance the effect of any herbal charm blend to which it is added.
For a quick and easy "make it happen" charm, combine a few pinches of Catalyst Spice Powder with a few drops of Posthaste Catalyst Oil, and squish the resulting paste into a small amount of salt dough or modeling clay as you contemplate what you want to happen. Form the clay into a ball and pierce it through with a chopstick or skewer, then allow the clay to dry. Hang the ball from the branch of a tree or shrub with a piece of sewing thread. Leave it there until the thread breaks and the ball drops, and then you will know that the result you hope for is soon to manifest. Make sure you retrieve the ball to prevent harm to the local plant life.
Hope this helps!
