The architecture is much more Modern than Rome or Bolzano, with blocky buildings reminiscent of the American 50′s-60′s, however, with subtle Italian character. There are fewer remains of Ancient Rome, but the cityscape remains quite eclectic. You can see the recurrence of the strong rhythmic bays, but many, stripped of the ornamentation seen much in Rome. The streets feel more uniform, open and…

Place de la Musica Catalana
Barcelona, Spain Lluís Domènech i Montaner
I would say that the contemporary architecture here is very respectful to the historic buildings. The place de la Musica is a perfect example. The modern addition protects the existing facade with a glass cladding. You can see the interior of the building from the outside, but through a flat glass facade. It’s a good compliment to the bizarre, baroque,…

Barcelona
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is unexpectedly modern. It has an emerging spirit that is different from Milan. The people mind their own businesses and keep to their own enjoyment, but are friendly and approachable. There is a hippie or boho attitude, and many people sport gypsy pants, which I sadly rarely saw in Italy. Liking this city very much.

Milan
Milan, Italy
My first impression of Milan will forever be characterized by our first arrival. We took the train there from Bolzano, and upon arrival, we rushed to another train to get to the city. With no time to stop or eat, we sped through the grand Central Station, rushed onto our subway, and to the embassy – but I think this is the appropriate manner in which to take in Milan. It’s a bustling…

Rome, Italy
Rome is a city with multiple layers of history and information, collected over decades in time. In a small area, you can see artifacts from the Ancient Greeks, buildings from the Renaissance or Medieval times. Most buildings are or are in the process of being carefully restored and their integrity kept intact. It’s amazing to see the centuries of works coexist.
However, it seems…

Bolzano
I’ve been spending the past few weeks in Bolzano and it feels like I’m in a different world. Bolzano is a small town in Italy, on the border of Germany and Switzerland, and therefore, has a distinct character that set it apart from other Italian cities. In fact, the people here speak Italian, German, and a strange Bozen dialect. The town sits in the middle of the alps and the dolamites,…

Surrey Central
Surrey, BC Bing Thom
On our way to Seattle, we stopped in Surrey to see Bing Thom’s SFU Surrey Campus. I’d never been there, partly because I rarely go to Surrey. Despite Surrey’s reputation as a ghetto, I think that this building is the beginning stage of Surrey’s redevelopment and urbanization. The significance of this transformation is appropriately illustrated by the building, which…
