“It’s a shame really, that being an asshole doesn’t get you anywhere in life. Maybe you should have shared your focus a little more, oh well - too late now.” Emma shrugged nonchalantly, looking down at her nails. “Oh I don’t intentionally make anyone cry. It’s not my fault if people can’t handle that hard truth. Or take a joke anymore.”
“As flattered as I am that you’re so concerned about where I’m going with my life, let me assure you; you have no reason to be worried,” Damien shrugged. He grinned, nodding at her words, “Touche.”
“No. I have no interest in telling you anything.”
“So are you saying there’s no point in asking?”
“Are you implying that something is wrong with me?” Narcissa could list every issue she had, it dragging on longer than the list of good things in her life, but she’d rather ignore every single problem for the moment. “How heartwarming, Damien. Truly. How do I ever get annoyed with you when you speak such kind words?”
“Only that you seemed to be in a mood, so there must be something wrong- not necessarily with you,” He explained with a shrug, rolling his eyes, “Oh Narcissa, you know how much I enjoy these little talks of ours. It’s a wonder really, why would you ever be annoyed at me when I’m only trying to express my concern?”
Emma gave him the best glare she could muster, not her most powerful, though. “Excuse me? Avery, that isn’t your place to say.” She took the chair and was about to drag it way, when she looked back to him. “You’re not as clever as you think you are, you know.”
“But it’s true, isn’t it?” He carried on tauntingly, “Love, it’s not for you to tell me what my place is.” Damien raised an eyebrow at her questioningly, “What would make you say that?”
“You already sullied your good reputation the minute you became friends with me.” She pointed out.
“Exactly,” He nodded, “And I had to work hard for people to believe that I had in fact not redeemed and you are probably only wasting your time.”
Characteristically, Septima was over prepared for testing, almost obnoxiously so. What she wasn’t prepared for was extraordinary circumstances that lead to migraines and gut wrenching agony at her decision to expedite her classes by taking double the load. An attack on the school ––– an attack on her, she nearly forgot what the world looked like beyond the castle walls. An all too familiar voice sliced through her thought process, brown tendrils permeating across her back as she spun her head. Damien Avery. “There’s a reason for that,” she chimed in a faux sing-song voice, tossing the large textbook on the desk. The acoustics of the library caused the contact of the leather bound book to the table to rattle loud enough that she feared Irma Pince might have her head at any moment. “Why aren’t you in class? I am a prefect, you know.”
Damien usually didn’t care about studies at all. He was hardly ever in the library for the purpose of actually working on his assignments. He just liked the quiet of it, especially after nights when he had barely gotten any sleep. He raised an eyebrow when she dropped the book on the desk, wincing at the loud noise, “Dramatic as ever, I see,” He said in a dry tone. He lets out a small laugh, raising an eyebrow, “And what might that be?” Damien tilted his head, “Why aren’t you in class? A hypocrite, as well.”
“Fine.” She said back a bit mockingly sitting across from him. “So which part of the assignment are you wanting to do? He said we have to work together it’s like a group thing and I’m pretty open to whatever you have in mind”
“Well ideally, you would do the assignment and I would just sort of tag along,” He shrugged, “Do you think you’re open to that? That’s what I had in mind.”
“To some degree you may assume so, yes. However one unknowing individual may assume you care not either way and merely were taking advantage of the seat,” an idle shrug followed. Though she’d half squinted at him before speaking again, “It was meant as a threat. Not a suggestion.” As he moved, she’d swiftly taken the seat for herself. “You suppose? Your reluctance is flattering.”
“But when I am clearly reluctant to give up my seat, surely they would understand?” He added with a small grin. Damien laughed, “Love, you should know better than to think I would perceive it as a threat.” He crossed his legs, shrugging and said in a teasing tone, “It’s been a long day. My legs needed their rest.”
Alex left out a small laugh as the other leaned forward. “I dunno, think about it Damien”
“Nope, nothing rings a bell,” He only shakes his head, smirking, “You’re going to have to help me out here.”
( * ░ ❛ OH I’m sure you do… and that’s like your greatest accomplishment right ?? But please do explain because in my opinion I can make this really uncomfortable for you as well. ❜
“Are you going to turn this into a lecture?” He shrugged, “I don’t get uncomfortable all that easily but sure, feel free to try.”
“ deaf and dumb, what a great combination. ” scorned the young snake as he approached the other with a grimace. “ joke’s over, move your feet. ”
“Well you sure have a way of convincing me,” He raised his eyebrows, nodding along. “I am definitely inclined to do what you say now.”
“Are you actually concerned or just being nosy?” she questioned, turning her head to look at him.
“Nosy? Call it curiosity,” he paused for a moment before shrugging, leaning forward in his chair, “If I say I’m concerned, will it make you more inclined to tell me?”
Narcissa didn’t feel as if she needed to repeat herself, but he was irritating her quickly. “I’m in a foul mood,” the blonde stated with a serene smile before bending over and pushing his feet out of the chair. “Cross me today and it might be the last thing you do.” Pointedly, she sat down and glared before turning her back to him.
Damien raised an eyebrow, “What happened to you?” He asked, more out of curiosity than anything else. He scoffed, shrugging his shoulder, “See- I’m used to your threats, they have kind of lost their effect.”
“Probably about the only thing you’ve ever been this invested in, so I’ll let you have it.” She replied, dropping into the seat before he could change his mind. “Made anyone cry today?”
“Well I really have to focus, you know? Can’t accidentally slip up.” He laughed at her question, shaking his head, “Sadly no. Came close though, there’s still time. How about you?”
“Well yes you do.” She said, dropping her hand from the chair. “Unless this is just you’re natural demeanor, Avery. And that would be pretty sad.”
Damien nodded along with her words as if he was agreeing but the smirk never left his lips, “Sad?” He arched an eyebrow, “Oh Emma, I don’t think you can call anyone sad.” He moved his feet from the chair, nodding towards it, “There you go.”
Damien hadn’t slept a wink the previous night. Too exhausted to go to classes the next day, he was instead in a back corner of the library. It wasn’t like Damien came here to study- he simply liked the isolation. No one would expect for him to be at the library so no one ever bothered him. He was leaning back in his chair, absentmindedly sketching on a parchment when he saw her taking out a book from one of the nearby shelves. Suddenly feeling a little more awake, a tired grin flashed across his lips, “Haven’t seen you in a while.”
