This study analyses how frameworks have been used to research the social impact of dams, particularly focusing on resettlement. It proposes a new framework for determining the social impact of dams that addresses the dimensions (space, time, and value) of social impact and the components (infrastructure, livelihood, and community).
The Narmada Dam's construction was highly controversial. Not only would it displace millions of people in it's base region in India, it was very costly and not even projected to provide the energy that it was claimed to. It highlights the importance of not only having a clear understanding of the effects of dams but also the importance of truthfully providing energy and sustainability to the people who live in places of poverty.

China’s plan to build hydro dams over Salween River
Asia’s last free flowing river originates in Tibet, runs through Yunnan and flows into Burma and Thailand. The folds and bends it creates sustain millions of people and a rich biodiversity of plants and animals. A mega plan to build multiple dams threaten both local people and wildlife.
The pallid sturgeon is threatened because it can no longer travel far enough on the Missouri River to find a healthy place for its eggs to develop.
What has no teeth, no rib cage, is covered in bony scales and managed to outlive the dinosaurs? The answer is the pallid sturgeon. But after millions of years of survival, only about 125 of these wild “dinosaur fish” remain. And if something isn’t done to save this endangered species, it could vanish forever — all because of what’s going on at a single dam in Montana.
Pallid sturgeon were once abundant along the Missouri River, which flows east from Montana and south until it empties into the Mississippi River in Missouri. They swam up it to spawn, and their fertilized eggs developed as they drifted down the river and through its tributaries. The larvae turned into fish that could grow up to six feet long, weigh up to 90 pounds and live about as long as the average human…
The average age of the 84,000 dams in the country is 52 years old. The nation’s dams are aging and the number of high-hazard dams is on the rise. Many of these dams were built as low-hazard dams protecting undeveloped agricultural land. However, with an increasing population and greater development below dams, the overall number of high-hazard dams continues to increase, to nearly 14,000 in 2012. The number of deficient dams is estimated at more than 4,000, which includes 2,000 deficient high-hazard dams. The Association of State Dam Safety Officials estimates that it will require an investment of $21 billion to repair these aging, yet critical, high-hazard dams.
