random, post hiatus thoughts

i love seeing how so many of my pjo mutuals (on this acc and others on tumblr / other social media pages) have such an overlap between pjo and all of these other incredible fandoms ??? like it seriously makes me so happy because i know we’ve all got this big imagination that stretches beyond just the one box we might feel inclined to reach towards

for example, i am a die-hard marauders fan ! my best friend is obsessed with avatar the last airbender ! my cousin loves all things acotar (yes i judge her for it but in the most loving way i swear) ,,, but the one thing all of us have in common is that we find ways to bring those book loves of ours into everything we do because <3 serotonin <3 

anyways, this is just me rambling after not having been on this account for a hot minute. as usual, if you have any dope fanfictions or just wanna connect and be mutuals, hmu ! :)

ok so like OBVIOUSLY i love percabeth right ? they’re the big deal of the pjo fandom PLUS i feel like i see so much of myself in annabeth (what self-proclaimed child of athena wouldn’t) and who’s type isn’t percy-esque (himbos of any gender are just <3)

BUT … have yall really really REALLY taken a look at clarisse and silena? like ok let’s break this down

their parents are Ares and Aphro (greek myths showing how they love each other so it isn’t unlikely that clarisse and silena have chemistry… in fact it’s MORE than likely that they’re connected as we see by how clarisse reacts when silena *SPOILER ALERT* dies)

speaking of the silena death, the parallels between clarisse x silena and patrocles x achilles ?! UNMATCHED we literally cannot ignore the fact that that was a clear allusion to that tragic love story that was recognized in ancient Greece

some things that stand in the way of clarisse and silena being canon (besides the fact that silena is dead oop)

yes yes i get that chris is with clarisse and silena is with beckendorf but there is NO WAY that they didn’t have any feelings towards one another at SOME point in being at chb

i really think that they had such potential and rr’s tragic need to appeal to heteronormativity in the early series really got to him sigh

Personal headcanon that clarisse learns to braid silena’s hair because “silena it’ll help my hand eye coordination…. NO silena not to be girly” but when silena dies, clarisse braids her own hair and her siblings’ hair as a way to connect with them and calm down 

canon that silena helps clarisse be vulnerable and lean into her personal emotions more (as shown by when she comforts silena after charlie dies)

indoctrinating my roommate into the pjo fandom

SO my roommate finally read the first pjo book (i will say she did mention reading it when she was younger BUT she remembered next to nothing so im gonna consider this completely my influence) 

yes yes she liked it and her favorite character was annabeth WHATEVER WE BEEN KNEW what i was MOST excited about was being able to walk her through the rite of passage into the fandom that is absolutely shitting on the movies <3 

i kid you not she finished the book probably sometime last week and last friday night i sat her down on the couch and we watched the mammoth that is the first movie

her main thoughts and criticisms include:

1. why does annabeth not have blonde hair ?! (to which she said about 6 times watching the movie)

2. grover is too fucking funny even if he’s not in character

3. The LOTUS CASINO SCENE. that is all <3

4. why did they fuck up annabeth’s character so hard damn

having her read the first book and watch the first movie with me was truly the best thing ever thanks roomie hehe

lt musical top five songs

hello hello hello how are we doing on this fine day november the 3rd ? have we voted (if you’re eligible to in the US) ? did we eat food and drink water ? are we taking care of ourselves physically and mentally during what will probably be an extremely challenging end to 2020 ?

if you’re anything like me right now and you care remotely about the state of the united states government, you’re probably trying to find ways to distract yourself from looking at your phone 24/7 in hopes that you can avoid the political chaos. the way i’ve elected (hehe, word choice) to do that is by turning off my notifications and binge listening to the lightning thief: the percy jackson musical (aka the musical based off of the first book in pjo, aka the book and musical that literally pulled me by my hair through quarantine)

i honestly haven’t given the soundtrack a listen since before my uni started, but now that i’m re-listening to it to destress, i feel like i have a lot of opinions about this amazing soundtrack. of the entire soundtrack AS WELL AS any bonus tracks of songs that were cut out but still released, my top five fav songs are as follows:

1. D.O.A. - UGH PLS THE SINGER’S VOICE, makes me laugh, i love the creativity and the way i feel like i can picture myself with the trio with all the characters and the way they all react

2. Lost! - HAHAHAHA y’all i’m from new jersey so +10 points for that ALONE, the chaos makes me laugh, percy still in his “idk what the Hades is going on” phase

3. In the Same Boat - the sass, the “woah”, grover, the way this song makes me laugh every time i listen to it 

4. Good Kid - i SING this song when i'm alone in the car bruh like i SCREAM these lyrics

5. Son of Poseidon - really like the pick-me-up of the soundtrack, you can feel the energy being put back into the plot, this is the song you sing driving down the highway on a quest when you finally figure out how to save the day

honorable mentions goes to:

a. My Grand Plan - the way i project onto annabeth so hard (i honestly don’t know how much i would like this song based on the melody and stuff if i didn’t love annabeth’s portrayal and the fact that the message in the lyrics resonate so heavily)

b. Pick a Side - Clarisse (aka my fav), Luke lowkey questioning his role in the war, THE hARMONIES AND JUST EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PHYSICAL SCORE

c. Put You in Your Place - <3 clarisse <3 , <3 the guitar <3 (im not really a rock music type of person but this song in particular changed the way i listened to music and specifically this soundtrack considering how much of it has that late 90s early 2000s rock vibe), also i just love this scene in the book

d. Take the Weight - EMOTIONAL, RAW, 10/10, makes me question my role in life

another week another unnecessary fixation on a show i’ve watched at least four times over <3

when i tell you i’ve watched greys anatomy THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH at least 4 times… i’m so serious it hurts

when i was watching it through this time, though, i definitely felt like “oh my gosh, this character would definitely be a child of athena” or “wow, if they were in the pjoverse, who would be their godly parent?” SOOOO guess what we’re doing today folks

(i’m only doing characters that make an appearance in the first two seasons because that’s where i am rn in my re-watch)

george o’malley → george omg <3 so much love for this boy. he’s easily one of the kindest characters, but that doesn’t mean he lets people step on his toes - george has so much power and we really see him starting to take control and harness it throughout his arc. i’m gonna make a really bold claim and say he’s a child of one of the Big Three, specifically i think he fits the marker to be a child of Zeus. george reminds me a lot of Jason from HOO - he’s really kind and soft-spoken, but he commands respect when needed and is known to adhere to the rules pretty strictly. i think george is a natural leader when he wants to be, and just because he might not have the biggest bark or bite of the surgeons on the show doesn’t mean we should cast him aside (this is a trait i find super important for many of the powerful demigods in the PJOverse !!)

christina yang → i think through-and-through, my gal christina yang is a daughter of Nike. Bold, ambitious, and highly successful, i can’t see dr.yang being a child of anyone OTHER than the Greek goddess of victory. yang works hard to get what she wants, graduated at the top of her class at every university she received a degree from, and will very obviously through anyone under the bus if it means she gets the best surgery and the most recognition (whether or not that’s healthy … well that’s not really for me to argue is it HAHA)

addison montgomery-shepherd → addison montgomery-shepherd truly is one of my favorite characters. i think she has one of the best arcs of any character and really is the most multi-dimensional on greys. if i’m going JUST by what i know about them based on the first two seasons of grey’s, i think i would beg her as a daughter of Aphrodite. not only is she beautiful, but she’s proven time and time again how dedicated she is to love. even though she cheated on derek, she tries insanely hard to make it work (even going as far to relocating across the country for him and leaving behind the man she fell in love with - truly a greek tragedy that Aphrodite … or at least the Aphrodite canon to PJ … would be obsessed with).

a fanfic i always reach for !!

when it comes to fanfiction, i feel like i’m the kind of person to just read whatever’s put in front of my if it sounds interesting or fun to read. bUT when i tell you this is probably the one fanfiction i will consistently pick up when i feel like i just want to be back in my percabeth feels, im SERIOUS. 

https://archiveofourown.org/works/7523317/chapters/17100580 → “Game, Set, Match” by ananbeth and blackjacktheboss on AO3 (their users on tumblr are the exact same: @ananbeth and @blackjacktheboss) have probably written the most beautiful masterpiece of an AU i’ve ever laid my eyes on. 

the story revolves around percy and annabeth (among others that we loved in the original books) who are professional tennis players. annabeth and percy hook up one night and decide to become friends w benefits (which… knowing what we know about percy and annabeth … simply does not go well at all). they hook up in hotel rooms across the world, go on cute dates, and (SPOILER ALERT) fall in love <3

I think my favorite thing about this fanfiction (besides the fact that i can project heavily on the experiences of annabeth in the fic) is that the sexual interactions between percy and annabeth are not explicit but rather written as though someone is describing to you a piece of art in a museum. i don’t think i’ve ever read anything remotely sexual and felt like i was gonna cry by how beautiful the encounter was written. 

SERIOUSLY if you have the time consider giving this fanfiction the attention and adoration it so dearly deserves :))

sharing fan blogs :P

so today my roommate and i finally showed each other our tumblr blogs… needless to say it was so funny because we were reading each other’s posts out loud and getting so embarrassed about what we wrote. (i also realized that since this is just a blog for me i don’t need to be formal about it at all just because it’s a singular fandom acc) it really made me realize how personal fandoms and fan blogs are

when i first started my fan blog (my personal one, not this pjo one) i don’t think i told a single soul what it was because my parents found out about it when i was a child in the closet (no longer a child, still in the closet though lmfao). now i feel like my blog is a way for me to vent and explore things about myself that i just can’t in real life. so, to me, it was so funny seeing how that same mentality manifested when i was sharing a really personal part of myself with my roommate. i can reblog anything from politics to fandoms to my spiritual journey.

anyways, that was just something i was thinking about and reflecting on how far i’ve come since i first started my tumblr acc waaaaaay back when i was definitely too young to be on this platform. so, roomie, if you see this, welcome to the blog hehe (and pls help me come up with a better name for my personal blog because i hate the name love u !!)

Percy Jackson Characters and Their Hogwarts Houses

I love looking at crossovers between some of my favorite works of literature, and I know that so many people from the Percy Jackson and Harry Potter fandoms overlap so heavily. So, I’m gonna talk about some of my favorite yet underrated characters in PJO and what I think their Hogwarts house would be!

Charlie Beckendorf - Charlie, as called by Silena, or Beckendorf, as most of Camp Half-Blood knew him, was the Head Counselor for the Hephaestus cabin and one of Percy’s confidantes at camp. *SPOILER* When Charlie sacrificed himself aboard the ship in order to destroy it and let Percy escape, it was one of the greatest sacrifices that I think Riordan wrote in any of his books. The bravery it took to do that and the selflessness Beckendorf had in that moment leads me to believe that he would be a Gryffindor. 

Ethan Nakamura - Ethan was one of those characters that was morally grey but I seemed to gravitate so heavily towards. Ethan’s godly parent was Nemesis, the goddess of balance and revenge; this was so clearly seen in the way Ethan acted as a rebel against the Olympians because he believed that the gods were acting unjustly and using their power in an abusive way. In my opinion, Ethan displays the traits of a Ravenclaw: intellectual and resourceful, but callous when it comes to those he believes in on the wrong side of things. 

Thalia Grace - Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus, is unarguably one of the strongest demigods of her time. Hell, she was even appointed the lieutenant of the Hunters of Artemis on her very first day having joined the group of women. She’s ambitious and cunning, but as seen by how she used the Hunters of Artemis as a way of evading her 16th birthday and therefore the Great Prophecy, she’s not the kind of girl who wants to be the hero of everything. Yes, she loves to succeed and be the best but not if it means losing her head. For this reason, I would headcanon her as a through and through Slytherin.

PJO Characters and their College Majors

I’m currently in college, and in one of my classes we drafted our college major plans. It had me thinking a lot about what some of my favorite characters’ college majors would be!

Annabeth Chase - Annabeth is easily top 5 favorite characters for me. Obviously, she would major in Architecture because of her dream to build something permanent, but a part of me also wants to say that she would possibly minor in Psychology. She obviously went through so much growing up and watched her siblings and Camp Half Blood friends do the same, so I could definitely see her taking a minor in Psychology as a way to better understand the people around her and be able to help her younger siblings in the ways that she couldn’t get the same help. Also, I honestly just think she’s the kind of person that wants to know what other people are thinking all the time (same tbh). 

Clarisse La Rue - I don’t want to do the stereotypical thing where people make PJO characters have majors based on their godly parentage, but I 1000% see Clarisse going on to teach at the War College or working with the Pentagon. So, because of that, I would probably peg her major as maybe IR with a security or war studies concentration. Wow… honestly the more I think about it the more I picture her going to work for NATO or something like that then retiring to teach at a university. 

Travis and Connor Stoll - okay this one is SO niche, but I love thinking that Connor and Travis would go on to create a program that empowers kids with rough family situations to be more confident and loving of their own individual personalities (since there were so many children of Hermes and it always felt like they got lost in the mix, Connor and Travis wouldn’t want any other kids to feel that way). I think, whether one or both does the same thing, that they would major in Business / Entrepreneurship and Children’s Psychology so they have that foundation to do some really impactful work. I can totally picture them teaching the kids fun pranks and making them have competitions for team-building.

Bisexual Visibility Week

For one of my university classes this week, I read an article about how being really involved in a fandom community online could help people navigate their sexual and gender identity. It was funny because I read it during Bisexual Visibility Week. Being someone who is bisexual and has been heavily involved in fandoms since I could remember, the article resonated with me because I didn’t even realize how much being in the fandom had impacted my personal journey with coming to terms with my sexuality. My sexuality is something that I think I’ve always known subconsciously, but being exposed to different characters with different backgrounds, even when most of the characters I grew up reading weren’t that diverse in certain aspects, helped me a lot in realizing certain things about myself. The Percy Jackson series was, however, the very first series that I’d read that had someone who was LGBT (even if they weren’t necessarily bisexual). 

It’s funny because at first, I kind of just told myself I really liked Nico di Angelo’s character “not because he was gay”... which is ironic because I literally projected onto him so intensely when reading any of his POVs. When I finally came to terms that he really was the first ounce of representation LGBT people had, I better understood that… yes, I did like him because he was gay! He was like me, and that wasn’t something I’d ever encountered before. Then, as I got older, it was really cool seeing how so many people in the PJO fandom had the same experiences as me with latching on to Nico’s character because he was also their first experience with identity representation. Now, we see almost everyone and their mothers in the fandom head-canoning different characters as different sexual and gender identities which is SO cool because if I want Silena Beauregard to be a Middle Eastern, bisexual woman in love with Clarrise LaRue then that’s something that is out there and that I can have. That’s easily the best part of this fandom is how intricate our headcanons are that everyone can find representation for their respective identities in the universe we’ve created outside of the canonverse. 

Without the PJO series or fandom, I don’t think I would’ve had such a good grasp and pride in my sexuality than I do now. Happy Bisexual Visibility Week! <3

Clarisse La Rue

A character that always seemed to resonate with me, whether it be when I read the book for the first time as a kid to when I re-read the book in quarantine, was Clarisse La Rue. Clarisse, a daughter of Ares. Originally, Percy had described her in the books as someone who was super hot-headed, arrogant, and loud. Physically, she was fit but bulky, with brown eyes and a face bordering on pudgy. Something about this had always irked me at the way she was described because I felt like I was her in a sense. For most of the first book and a half, she was simplified down to be the bully of the series. As Percy got to get to know her throughout the series, he began to see what her loudness hid: a loyal friend, a fierce ally, and a girl looking to be loved by her neglectful father. 

Now, I can totally see the parallels between Clarisse in the first series and myself when I was younger. In true only-child fashion, I always felt the need to be the loudest in the room and prove myself whether it be through academics or otherwise in order to make my parents proud and get that much needed attention. Although I definitely have gripes with the way Rick Riordan portrayed Clarisse (and how many authors portray the slightest of morally grey characters as either hot white boys or fat girls who are loud and obnoxious, like seriously, find a new stereotype please), I definitely felt like it was representation that I’d never received in any of the other books I’d read growing up. So, thank you Clarisse for being that for me. <3

Do you ever just think about how much a book has changed you?

I started reading the Percy Jackson series when I was in middle school, and I think it was the first time I felt like I was a part of a series. Don’t get me wrong, I read a LOT as a kid, but I think the characters in Percy Jackson felt like friends to me in ways that other books didn’t make me feel. I was definitely a troubled kid in the ways that I felt like characters from the books, especially Percy and Annabeth, made me feel seen. Those books helped me better understand myself and the way my brain works, but it also acted as an outlet for me to start breaking down certain barriers that I created. I found people in my school and online who read the books and felt the same way I did, and I remember feeling such a close connection with my friends in middle school at that time because we all genuinely felt like we were demigods in the series at one point.

Now, I definitely feel that sense of community again. Going into high school, I entered a really bad stage of my life and stopped reading all together. In the back of my mind, the Percy Jackson universe was definitely still there, but I didn’t read the books at all. Then, when quarantine hit because of COVID, I literally reread the entire series. It felt like rediscovering a part of myself, especially since I could find a greater community within all the different social media platforms that developed over the years, and I basically had all the time in the world to dive back in headfirst into the fandom. Being able to get back into the fandom has honestly helped me so much in discovering who I am, my values in life, and how I want to help others feel as seen and heard as I did from reading these books.
