The Truth about Self-Care

Don't let people tell you how to self-care.

I've seen a lot of people talk about self-care like it's just black and white. They act like it's very general and that it's simply taking care of yourself.

Yes, there's a general keep clean/hydrated/well fed rule, but other than that? Self-care is YOU care. Always remember to put the self in care. People seem to forget to do that a lot.

Self-care isn't just taking CARE of yourself. It's making yourself happy, too.

You're allowed to spoil yourself. If you're mobile and have money, go out and get some expensive coffee or hot chocolate instead of buying something for your family. Take a few bucks out of your grocery money to get yourself something cool if you can. Go to the mall by yourself or with people who make you feel comfortable. Go to the library. Go to the park. Do what you want to do, not what other people want you to do.

Don't want to do any of that? It's okay to not want to be around anybody! Take some time to be alone. Watch a movie. Visit an old fandom/find a new one to check out. Play your favorite video game. Get caught up on an online/TV series. Read a book. Listen to new music or find some of your old favorites. Try a new recipe (cooking OR eating).

I've been exhausted lately, so do you know what I'm doing for myself as self-care? I'm going to drink some hot chocolate and tea, make some popcorn and watch Disney movies before I take a shower and sleep for work. Maybe write something or draw. That's my self-care.

Remember, self-care is personal. It's all about you. It's YOUR time to be happy, not make others happy. Take a deep breath and relax. Remind yourself that you're important and you deserve time out of your day for yourself. <3

i spent christmas alone while my family got together and fought, and honestly i feel so good about this

meanwhile my sister threatened to disown my dad so he threatened to disown her, while my mom enabled and my other sister downed a bottle of wine to deal.

on the other side of the country, i was busy discovering, to my delight, that the that the 3rd installment of the Home Alone franchise not only stood up to the test of time, but contains some of the best oneliners and comedic timing I have ever seen.

honestly, keep toxic people out of your life. family isn’t everything, and bad family is often worse than no family. don’t be afraid to put in some distance, especially during high stress times like the holidays. you don’t actually owe them anything.

being alone for the holidays is so much better than being with people who make you unhappy.

sorry for the inactivity, guys! I’ve been busy with work irl, sadly. I love my job, though, so it’s not a problem!

I’m actually upset about S3 ending, but I’m excited for S4 and the new holiday specials!! I wonder if we’ll get a thanksgiving episode?! Or a valentines day episode?! Or maybe a birthday episode! Who knows! :O Cameron’s redemption arc had me shook--
