College, and specifically UCLA, gymnastics seems like such a fun and encouraging place. I love how she’s genuinely smiling throughout the entire video and how her teammates are cheering her on and truly loving and supporting her throughout her routine. I hope we can get more of this in sports!

I watched a video where, as she started at UCLA, she talked about why she left elite gymnastics (meaning: the level of Olympic athletes). She explained that her coaches, doctors she had gone to, judges, and many others, were telling her she was “like a bird who couldn’t fly” because of her size. She talked about how she didn’t like how she looked and would spend hours in the gym after eating a meal just to be what they wanted. She said the sport ‘stole her smile’ and she just wanted to enjoy a pizza once in a while without feeling so bad about doing it, and she wanted to compete to enjoy it again, not to prove a point. She also talked about how Miss Val and the team at UCLA inspire her and how they helped her get her smile back.

So to me, the thing I like the best about the routine video, and the performance most of all, is that she got her smile back and that after all she struggled with and discussed so openly, she can still create beautiful routines like this and be a role model for girls who feel like they don’t fit in with someone else’s image of what they should be.
