Trying to get back into random blog entries and also wanted to give Alina from Beau Est Mien a shout out for her beautiful print launch over the weekend. As usual Flora & Fauna cafe brings out the most beautiful brunches.

우정 woojeong in Perth is fucking amazing. The bibimbap was perfect and the waitstaff were delightful!
Our $15 meal came with ever flowing side dishes with TWO types of kimchi.
A week ago I shot the Perth Roller Derby Grand Final! (I’m currently learning to become a boating skater).
The whole group is amazing, and the game is played short and fast! I love it, it’s got the best vibe of any sport I’ve ever been in. Can’t wait till I can bout!

A weekend ago I traveled to a farm in South Australia for my partner’s nana’s 90th. She’s the pluckiest lady you’ll ever know. I can only hope to be as lively as she is when I’m 60!

Finally I’ve gotten my act together, I really want to start using this blog as a photo journal. Too long I’ve felt pressured to put words next to my images, when really, I don’t think that way. I think in images. I like looking at images and not necessarily reading text.
So I present to you, Day One of my Japan Holiday. Getting to Japan.

Last night I trekked to the Dessert Garden in the CBD to buy ChiCho’s (my favourite gelaterie in Perth) new ice-cream sandwich, a dessert I must seek out. Unfortunately they’d sold out of salted caramel with choc biscuit, and their fruity flavour by the time we’d arrived. So we bought the macha ice-cream and black sesame cookie.
Firstly, like most ice-cream sandwiches that are hand made, the cookie is tougher and ultimately biting into will push the ice-cream out. But these sandwiches haven’t been filled to the brim so you can still stay pretty neat.
The ice-cream (while being warned by ChiCho) is actually not that bitter. The macha is a mild flavour with the creamyness of the ice-cream pulling through. Since we’d both recently been to Japan: this was a disappointment to my partner who loved the bitter version, and a relief to me since I’d struggled to finish a whole cone in Japan. The matcha comes through though, and because the favour isn’t stand-out it doesn’t overpower the lightly flavoured cookie.
The biscuit, while having beautiful black sesame seeds, actually mostly tastes like shortbread which, while a bit disappointing, is very delicious.
I can’t wait to be in fast enough to try the other flavours.
Last week I went down to try out Max + Sons coffee. I’d seen their Instagram and loved what I saw.
It’s a little bit miss-mashed, because it’s in an arcade; inside is all warm woods and golden lighting modernism, where outside is a lot of white and yellow minimalism. If I had a choice I’d sit inside every time at their wooden bench top facing out into the arcade.
We had a flat white, and an espresso over ice. They’re brewing with Five Senses, and I while I have a soft spot for smaller roasters, their espresso blend was excellent. Very aromatic and punchy in flavour, and not bitter at all and went excellent with ice. They use different beans for coffee types, and the flat white was very mild, which (I agreed with The Skinny Perth who was working that day) is very much the style at the moment.
Their donuts are by Top Dup, and are very fluffy and well filled but the flavours alway sound more exciting than they taste. The chia spice donut just wasn’t very chia, but was comforting.
The toasties are made to order, and they will change the bread to your liking. The pulled pork here was moist and delicious, and all the flavours were balanced perfectly, nothing overpowering the other. And for $10 with coleslaw it was a pretty nice comfort meal, even better when shared.
I’d go again for the espresso, because it was brewed to perfection.
