updated background for unit 2 final
Color Study
Unit 2 Final Project
The concept of wearing a mask was the inspiration for this project. My goal was to create a visual representation of what it feels like to have traditional Catholic ideals constantly being projected onto me. With my family, I tend to always have to walk on eggshells around them. I have to make sure to fall in line to what they deem appropriate and holy. It is a like a constant weight on my back that forces me to fall into like, wearing a metaphorical mask for my pwn protection from ridicule. With this in mind, I really wanted to use my painting skills on an untraditional surface and paint in an untraditional (more abstract than naturalistic) way; similar to how I quietly rebel against my families traditions. I chose colors that were similar to those in the Corinthian room at the Masonic Temple, just far more saturated and contrasting. using colors that are so bright and strong helped me created a tension and heaviness that seem to weigh the whole photo down. I wanted to use someone whole could understand my experiences, so I asked my friend Hayley (she is also Roman Catholic). Using previously mixed colors that I tested on my own skin, I painted what resembles a saint, but with a twist. Though there is a weight on my back I still do what I can to break free of the traditions forced upon me. Some of the saint is flowing and soft, while other parts break free of that and become jagged and geometric, all while still blending in with the colors of the rest of it. Camouflaged, yet standing out. I also did my best to make Hayley be close in color to the wall in front of her, and even have some parts of the painting almost seem to be like one with her skin, all blending together in attempt to stay hidden. She is hunched with a weight on her back, but still manages to support herself. Every single aspect of my piece was thought out to reflect my own experience with finding ways to feel comfortable in my own skin and also make my family happy, all about balance. Though the piece could be stronger, I feel I still achieved my goal.

Unit One Final Project
My piece used tissue paper (Kleenex), q-tips, wooden coffee stir sticks, and a piece of bounty paper to create a bouquet. I manipulated the tissue paper into petals and poured some wax on them to stiffen, like an actual flower might look. The q-tips were arranged in a way to look like buds or budding flowers, all connected to the stem that was the stirring stick. To finalize the entire bouquet, I used a piece of bounty to cradle them I used objects typically used for mundane everyday tasks or habits to create something more beautiful. These objects would have been used to clean or perfect something, then ultimately become garbage. The objects I chose never become something, they are merely made to be used in the creation or destruction of something else. Instead, I used them to make the art instead of clean it up. I covered them in acrylic paint, making a gradient across all the flowers, ranging from yellow to green to blue. Then, within the flowers themselves, the color that makes them up becomes less saturated as your eyes more to their center, ending in the light gray used to desaturate them. When I eventually photographed them, I made sure to have the box of tissues used to be in the background, as a reminder that not everything has to be come garbage, sometimes it can be just as beautiful as who or what uses it.
Unit one final- draft
Unit One Final Project Proposal-
I planned to experiment with the idea of dying things, so I tried to pick objects that can be easily dyed. I settled on q-tips and tissues. I plan on dying them in a range of different dues and levels of saturations between green and yellow with the use of watercolor and acrylics mixed with water. My next step would be to make them into something, and flowers seemed to be a good place to start. I plan on possibly using straws and stems and making various types of flowers out of the q-tips and tissues with the aid of wax and hot glue. They would them be assembled into a bouquet. The last phase would be to photograph it in some melancholy lighting, on a table, hoping to tell a story. Q-tips and tissues are typically used for cleaning, most people have a very clear idea of what purpose they hold. I hope to alter this concept and attempt to make them beautiful, and use the connection between a bouquet of flowers, melancholy, and tissues as a point to tell a story visually.
