@danielbergeron
Here’s a nice little interview, and write-up, from the good folks at Wonderful Machine.
I recently had the good fortune to photograph Robert Duvall. He’s a class act. #RobertDuvall, #danielbergeron, #celebrityphotographer
This awards season has afforded me the opportunity to photograph just about every contender for the Oscars. Many heartfelt thanks to those who have taken the time to stand in front of my lens, and to those who put their trust in me to create these images.
2014 Wrap up.
After many years of pushing lights around for other photographers, I've pretty much transitioned out of assisting. There are still a couple of folks I'll work with, but for the most part, I've hung up my gloves. I'm not as financially set as my work might imply, but I'm working on it. There is a certain place that I see my work/name/brand, and for once, it seems obtainable. I have really good people on my side. I've shot some of the biggest celebrities out there, and word is getting around (I'm told) that I work fast, and well. I survived my first Sundance, and SXSW. Shot in NYC, in a suite that costs more per day then my studio does for a month. Speaking of studios: I moved out of the space that I was living in for about 7 years, and got a studio of my own. LIFE GOAL, UNLOCKED! Bit by bit, the space is coming along. I've shot Emma Stone, and Chaz Ebert, here.. as well as a campaign for Das Boom Ind. I could use a little more space on the shoot floor, but it is more than I typically get when I work on location. Train at altitude, no? On that note, since royalties now make up a portion of my income, I can retouch MUCH faster. The work that was done this year, is already setting the stage for the year to come: I'm already booked for Sundance, and SXSW, so stay tuned.
All the travel wasn't work related. Erin and I took off to Cozumel for a legit vacation. That was awesomely decadent, as were our many staycations, at the Standard, and the Fig. We also had a nice little getaway in Palm Springs. We flew to Denver, where I met her folks, and we flew to Louisiana, where she met mine. Both were great trips. Getting to see my family was a rare treat. We also went to Vegas for the last race of the season, and halloween. Such a good time! Hooray for a stable and happy relationship! I'm in a good place. :)
After a few years of knocking about in the pits, I've found a full time chair in sidecar racing. In spite of all we had going against us, we took 2nd in Vegas, and effectively threw down the gauntlet for the coming season. We will dominate the coming season, and just might try our hand at Pikes Peak.
So, for the coming year?
Keep going to pilates. Unless I really am under deadline, go when Erin goes.
Get more time on my bicycle. Sex really shouldn't be the only cardio that I get in my life.
Cook more. I know how, and I have an awesome kitchen. I really do have too much cheap Chinese food, and Pizza Loca in my diet.
Find a Rep. It is high time that I find a rep who better knows how to exploit my work, so that we all may profit.
Keep at it with the studio portraits, ('cos I like it) but start working in some location shoots.
Take the #1 plate, at the end of the season for sidecar racing. (Stay in shape. Know the rig. Work with my driver. Listen to those that have more experience)
Get back into Canyoneering. I didn't do a single canyon this year. :/ I don't want those skills to atrophy.
Entertain/host. This kind of ties in with cooking. It is nice to have company.
Do a better job of keeping in touch with old friends.
Chalk up another awesome year with Erin. (Yup... sappy... don't care.. She's rad.)
There's more, no doubt, but them's the basics. I'm looking forward to an even better 2015.
Michael Keaton ~ Actor
When it comes to photographing celebrities, one must work fast. I had approximately 3 minutes to shoot, shake hands, and let him on his way. In that short span, I gained one of my favorite images.
Here is a hint of what's to come from my recent shoot in Toronto. This was in partnership with IndieWire, and Movies On Demand. We were all on our game, and I can't wait to see the final projects roll out. Upward and onward.
Ellar Coltrane~ Actor
Ellar Coltrane is the star of Richard Linklater's new film, "Boyhood". This film follows Ellar from age 5-18.....literally. 12 years in the making, with the same actor. The film will be released on July 18th.
Guillermo del Toro ~ Director, Producer, Writer
Before I photographed Guillermo, I'll admit that I was expecting some dark and brooding figure. I couldn't have been more wrong. He was about as happy and upbeat as they come.
Michael B. Jordan~ Actor
Given the type of work that I shoot, I have to stay on top of unauthorized use of my images. When Michael was cast for the role of the Human Torch, I found this image popping up on a ton of blogs. I soon got to witness one of the more laughable results of the stupidity inherent in racism. It seems that comic book nerds.... ahem.. fans of the genre take issue with casting a black man into the role of a character that has a white twin sister. THE HORROR! Never mind that this is also a character that can combust at will, and fly.... that's no problem at all... but a white sister??? That could never happen in real life!!! Cognitive dissonance is a mofo.
That said, Michael was a cool dude. Real down to earth, and very thankful to be where he is at.
William H. Macy~ Actor
Flea~ Musician. Actor.
Chaz Ebert~ Publisher, President of Ebert Productions, Devoted Wife of the Late Roger Ebert.
I met Chaz at Toronto Film Fest last year. We got to talking at a film reception whose name escapes me at the moment. I told her about the trip that I was planning, to spend some time with my grandfather, and why. I didn't allude to the financial reasons for waiting to take the trip, but apparently, she just knew. Later that evening, she approached me, took my hand, and said: "Don't say anything. Go see your grandfather." She gave me a hug, and as she stepped away, she left some money to put toward the trip, in the palm of my hand. In a room full industry moguls, negotiating deals over sponsored gin and small bites, she took the time to extend an exceptional gesture of compassion. I'll admit that it was no small effort to maintain composure, given the environment.
Last night, I attended the release of "Life Itself". It is the documentary on the late Roger Ebert. Chaz was there (of course), and a seat in the theater was set aside in Roger's memory.
I did not grow up in the "film" world... unless you litany of c rate horror flicks from the local Video Stop. The household names of "Siskel and Ebert" were the only indicators that Film Critic could even be a job title. I am new to this subset of the world, so I went to this film with little more than the knowledge that Roger was a film critic, whose life was taken by an illness that is affecting an increasing number of people that I know. On leaving the theater, I had been witness to the story of a passionate journalist, not lionized by intent, but by matter of fact. He was not painted as perfect, but shown to be genuine. The film also validates the anecdotes that I've been privy to about what a great pair Chaz and Roger were. Even if you aren't a film buff, I'd recommend Life Itself.
Robert Patrick~ Actor. President of the Boozefighters MC
I photographed Robert Patrick along with the rest of the cast of the upcoming series "From Dusk Till Dawn". He had his Boozefighers colors at the shoot. We got to talking about motorcycles for a bit after everyone left. It completely went over my head that he was THE TERMINATOR!!! He turned out to be a really cool dude.
Glenn Close~ Actress Extraordinaire
Ron Howard~ Director, Producer, Actor..... (and a genuinely nice dude).
Joshua Oppenheimer~ Director
This eloquent man, of gentle demeanor, delivered the most jarring and surreal of documentaries I have ever seen. If you have not watched "The Act of Killing", I highly recommend.
Errol Morris.
Another one of my favorite subjects. He has a documentary out called "The Unknown Known", in which he interviews Donald Rumsfeld. I highly recommend. It will truly make your blood boil.
