A quiet night in was the perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day. After the bombing, the thought of being any public place with a large portion of the town worried her. Even staying inside had her scared that something might happen to innocent people. She adjusted a few items on the table, taking extra care to make everything look perfect. “I am starving,” Kiara commented. “And thankfully it’s finally time to eat!”

With dinner ready, and Daniel able to enter with a blazing smile across his face, he only found it more appropriate to surprise her by pulling out the bouquet from behind his back to hand over the table before they sat. “Happy Valentine’s Day my love.” He gestured with a cheeky grin, letting the aroma of the food fill him with joy. “Everything smells fantastic. I can’t wait to dig in.”

She hoped one of those days would come soon to not be such an embarrassment compared to him. With his movements stopping, Kiara leaned back slightly to let her arms wrapped around his waist instead. “Let’s get you home, then. No passing out or getting sick here.” She left one arm around him for support, guiding him in the direction of the exit and their car. As long as if she could get him there, getting him to the house would be a little easier. And with her sober status, Kiara didn’t need to worry about waiting for anyone else.

“You’re too sweet.” Daniel murmured still, slurred words coming out in waves as he managed to lean against her and find a rhythm of walking in stride with her. “I don’t know what I would do without you babe. I...you’re my rock. Everything to me. All my moons and stars. It’s you always and forever.” With his muttered words, he really had no comprehension of what he was saying, mostly letting words flood out now. “I love you so much. Like...so, so much. I can’t believe I got to marry you sometimes. I am the luckiest guy ever.”

She took his advice, trying to focus less on what they were doing and more on having fun. “None of this is quite natural for me, but you’re also a good teacher.” She smiled, closing her eyes for a moment when his forehead rested on hers. A light chuckle escaped her as she looked up at him. “Is this my cue to take you home? Before the blubbering becomes to much and I can’t at least get you to the car?”

“Am I? I didn’t think so, but that’s fine. You’ll get the hang of it one of these days.” Daniel chortled with a slight grin, easy to find the humor in the situation, though being two drinks in wasn’t helping in the slightest, the buzz having gone to a full state of being drunk in just a matter of moments as it finally hit him. He stopped dancing and continued to lean against her forehead, feeling a short pant. “I think...I must’ve drank too much, too fast.” He murmured out again, a short slur to his words as he stepped a bit lazily over his own feet, the supernatural alcohol hitting him hard.

Her feet betrayed her as she tried to participate in some form of dancing, looking down to see if it would help. The hand reaching for hers had her paying no mind to what Daniel had up his sleeve next. Kiara finally glanced up, focusing instead on his face rather than her two left feet. The misteps were still present, although gradually reducing them as she let him lead her throughout the entire dance. “I do trust you, and apparently it’s somehow working.”

As the process seemed to smooth out a bit, Daniel only uttered out a short chortle, guiding the dancing smoothly, but keeping their movements small enough to be contained in the area they had carved out, their own little world it seemed with the music filling around them. “You’ve just got to focus less on the dancing bit, and more on just going with the natural beat.” He chuckled as he let his forehead rest on hers while slowing down his rhythm. “Think those drinks are kicking in K.”

Dancing let her have fun in her own way, but any kind of rhythm or proper form would have to be left to her husband. Kiara practically had too left feet, and what she lacked in skill she made up for with passion. Her hands went around his neck, letting him lead the way in their dance together. She giggled, audibly sighing. “I do remember how terrible I was. You stole the show then too.” Kiara looked down at her feet, focusing on keeping up with what movements he was doing next. “I’m glad they came in handy for you! I don’t think mine quite understand that at all.”

Daniel only chuckled, the music being something he had gotten used to in being able to accomplish a dance that was both elegant and timeless. With one hand around her waist, the other found one of her arms wrapped around his neck before he pulled it off to hold her hand out and lead the way. He focused for a moment, before feeling the misteps she was taking. “Look at me Kiara. Don’t pay attention to your feet. I promise to lead you.” He took his first step, the waltz accompanied a tango for a blend of two dances. “You just have to trust me.”

“Oh the undressing is all us. No one else is allowed to see that sexy body of yours except for me.” Her hand slipped around his waist, easily walking in the direction of the other dancers. Kiara wanted to let loose a little bit, this being the way she could do it without needing to drink. She let go of his waist as they reached the edge of the crowd, instead wrapping them around his neck to face him, hips swaying slightly. “Time to blow all these other dancers away.”

“More like bruised body—but, it’s all yours. I promise.” Daniel teased back, as he stepped forward in line with her to reach the dance floor. Knowing his skills weren’t what they used to be, Daniel could still occasionally sweep Kiara off of her feet, something he could only hope for tonight as his hands found the perfect spot at her hips, guiding her slowly at first, before the song changed into something more his style. “You have no idea. Remember our wedding night first dance?” He whispered back coolly, before finding a new passion and giving into a short rhythm of things with a bit of swing dancing. “Who knew those college dance classes would come in handy.”

“I always come prepared. Especially, if you start acting all crazy. Those are moments I need to relive over and over.” Moments she didn’t want them to forget and be able to share with their kids one day. “I’d take them again in a heartbeat.” She kissed at his cheek, standing up as the next drink arrived. “I may need to enlist some help if you pass out, but I will make sure you make it to bed without your suit still on. Now, dancing awaits us.”

“You do always come prepared. One of the many reasons I married you.” He teased her, though, he knew he owed it to her time and time again. “I’ll try to at least be entertaining, though I make no promises.” He held up a finger, with a slight warning edge to his tone. As he heard her shift, he stood as well, letting himself keep by her side. “I’m sure there are plenty of people that would be happy to help, though, let’s just leave the undressing between you and me.” His grin pulled across his lips, before he easily let an arm wrap around her waist. “Lead the way to the dance floor my love.”

“Of course. I would love to have you both come.” Ethan enjoyed the thought of having them come to something he wasn’t actually in, but was helping put together. It was certainly something far different than what he normally did. “We will always have at least a tiny bit of trouble. It wouldn’t be fun if we didn’t.” He laughed, knowing that the best fun was the ones with a tiny bit of risk. “You’re right, I wouldn’t have to keep the little one. Unless you needed a break, you know, I’ll always be happy to help you guys with that. It’s hard work being a parent, and I’ll always be there if you guys need a break for at least a few hours. You just have to pay me in food.” He rubbed his face, smiling, while thoughtful of the future where he would babysit. It would be interesting, the very least. “I would love to come over sometime. Tell me when and where and I will gladly be there.” 

“Then I’ll gladly be there.” Daniel offered. “And trouble is basically our middle name. Remember college? We...had our fair share of hijinks.” His easy-going nature let himself easily laugh at the comment, adding, “You know food is a given at our house, so we’d be happy to pay you in food. And, we’ll definitely let you know when dinner is. And our address. We’ll always leave the door open for you.”

“My phone’s been out and ready to take evidence since we walked in here.” Kiara leaned into his side, watching him knock back the first drink in a seemingly easy manner. A grin spreading at how long before it would kick in and the more apparent goofiness to come out. “There’s no competition, we’re in this together. For better or worse, forever.” No matter what happened, they were in it together and she would love him to no end. “Okay, one more drink and then we dance. I want to get some time on the dance floor in before I have to help you out of here.”

“I knew it. I always had a feeling.” Daniel was an ever bigger goofball while drunk, and he figured if his wife wasn’t going to be drinking, than he might as well make his drinking worthwhile to her. “For better or for worse. The vows of a lifetime.” He repeated back to her, exchanging one drink for another. “You’ll have to carry me out of here if I’m going all out.”

“Please come. I would love for you both to enjoy it. I have a couple of students who have a lot of potential.” Ethan leaned his elbows against the table, resting his head in a hand. “I would enjoy being able to meet new people here. I’ve met some, most were remarkably sweet.” He frowned, thinking of the possibility of anyone being so bad they hurt others. So far, he’d only had one bad interaction with the locals. “We will have a lot of fun. We may be getting old, but we will have our fun.” Ethan imagined Daniel and Kiara as parents, and it was hard to think of them not having kids at some point. “You’re going to be a great dad, and Kiara is going to be the mom every other kid wishes they had.” His compliment was very true. If he had found foster parents like Kiara and Daniel, he would have been a much happier kid. “I would love to be a part of your kids lives. As long as I get to spoil the hell out of them.” 

“Potential is always promising. I can’t wait then. We’ll certainly have to entertain the idea and keep updated on the dates.” He knew the town had it’s perks, people seemingly easier to meet in random places, like everyone was always waiting for somebody new. “You get your hit and misses. It sounds like you’ve gotten used to the place though.” His grin grew, the time being something they couldn’t outrun. “We’ll always have our fun Ethan, and now that you’re here, I don’t think it’ll ever stop. Maybe a bit of trouble too.” Chuckling all the while, Daniel remained rather still in his seat, before shaking his head. “God, don’t I know it. Kiara is the most incredible person, bar none. And, you’re more than welcome to spoil them. That’s beauty in your job, you don’t have to keep them at the end of the day.” He teased back, before finishing up his coffee. “You should come over for dinner sometime, get back into the groove of our family again.”

She watched as the expression on his face changed, whatever thoughts running through his mind hopefully turning to the proposition she posed to him. Kiara might have been unable to drink in hopes of becoming pregnant, but she would give her husband one fun and carefree night before he felt he needed to stop too. “I hoped you wouldn’t,” she smiled against his lips, eyes memorizing his face as if she hadn’t a million times before. “You’re too good to me, you know that?” She whispered, giving him a small giggle. “I will enlighten the drunken buffoon with as many dances he would like. I’m sure it won’t take too long if you ordered the strong stuff everyone’s buzzing about.”

“You just want to capture blackmail of me, is that it?” Daniel cheekily retorted with his grin all there before he brought the drink back to lips to kick it back before another round was entertained. If he was going to be celebrating one last time, he was going to go big, something he wasn’t even sure he could do anymore. “You have no idea how good you are to me K. Everything you do....it’s perfect, I don’t know how I can compete with that.” He was always impressed with her never-ending compassion for him. “That’s where I was headed. It only seems fair to give the lady what she wants, huh?”

Danny’s question made him frown in thought, for only a moment. “I’m putting on a production with my acting students, actually. It’s weird, being behind the stage but not on it this time. Though, I’m looking into potentially being in something. I just haven’t decided what yet.” He thought over the idea of taking his students somewhere to see something good, though they had to do some fundraising before hand. While adults, he didn’t feel like it was fair to make them pay out of pocket. “We need to be very careful, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.” Leaning back in his chair, he looked over Daniel with amusement. “So I am going to be an Uncle? Well shit.” He laughed and reached across the table to gently squeeze his friends arm. “I’m so happy for you both. I’m glad you’re going to be taking this step, you’ll have some incredible kids for sure.” 

“Production, huh? I might have to take my wife out on the town for a date night to one of your shows then. I know she’d probably love it.” Daniel smiled to himself in the moment, knowing that there was a shared history between all of them the arts in general it seemed. “I don’t know if there’s a community group, but I’m sure there are plenty of people around here that would love something like that. Can’t let all the college students have the fun.” He lifted his head to let out a short chortle flee. “No, we’ll always have our fun, so long as we’re together again!” The history was all there, they just needed new schemes and things to do. “You’re making me feel great! I just hope that I can be the best dad there ever was. And, I’m sure Uncle Ethan won’t mind having a big part in their lives.”

“I won’t stop reading them, believe me. I look forward to the new one coming out. I read your novels not only because I support you, Danny, but because you’re a good author.” Ethan took a drink of his almost forgotten coffee, and smiled softly. “It wasn’t a great way to learn, but I had someone there to help. You did warn me to some degree. You mentioned the vervain before I moved, I just wasn’t smart enough to actually believe I needed it.” He laughed, reflecting on that night and how lucky he had felt to be here sitting with Daniel now. “You’re right. Too much reflection on it is a bad thing. But you’re here and healthy still. You may have lost your sight but I’m glad you’re safe and that whatever it was that happened, didn’t take you away from us.” The thought of losing Danny nearly caused Ethan to panic, and he took a breath to brush the thought aside. “We are old!” He mocked a groan and buried his face in his hands. “Please tell me that you don’t have kids yet. My heart can’t handle the idea of being ‘Uncle Ethan’. That will really mean I’m old, and I’m not ready for that.”

“You’re too kind Ethan. Any new shows you’re putting together, because I’d love to come out?” Daniel wondered if he still was on the stage, or would just be behind the scenes. Either way, he would gladly support the other as he did the same. “Well, I’m glad you’re okay now, and that you’ve somewhat found a place here it seems. It just means that we’re gonna both have to be careful.” He grinned back, a short chuckle leaving him while he only let his hands cross on top of the table. “I don’t think Kiara would let anybody get away with taking me just quite yet.” Daniel thought back on his wife, knowing he would be helpless without her. And, at the thought of kids, his smile on grew. “Oh Ethan! I haven’t told you the best news! Kiara and I are trying to start our family now. No kids just yet, but she does own a daycare here, where she gets to be around them all day. It’s given me a bit of baby fever myself. You’ll be Uncle Ethan soon enough!”

A hearty chuckle erupted from Ethan, and he was entirely too happy that he was with Daniel here in this moment. “I’m not gonna ask to borrow money, Danny. I just love what you write.” He was sure that Kiara and Daniel were happy, even in a place that could be hellish. It was crazy to think that one setup led to their happily ever after, and for a moment, he was just happy to see that true love could easily exist. “I… I certainly have learned my lesson on being careful around the people here, Danny.” He didn’t want to change the subject, but his lesson had been a quick one and he was sure to not make the same mistake again. “I wonder what kind of magic and what would have done this to you. I mean, you haven’t pissed off anyone, right? It’s hard to imagine anyone being mad at you. I mean, look at your cute face! It would be like beating a cute animal!” Although Ethan was serious about the subject, he wanted to sprinkle in some humor so Daniel wouldn’t be too on edge. He was worried that someone had targeted his friend, and he certainly didn’t want to make Daniel feel worse about the situation. “I guess it would be professor if I could ever be professional about it. It’s too weird having people close to my age calling me professor. It makes me feel old, man.” 

“By all means, keep reading then, because I’m working on a novel right now that should be out soon. It means a lot that you support me so much.” Daniel was easily just as proud of his friend and his accomplishments, and could only wonder if he would get back on the stage around these parts. “I hope it wasn’t through the hard way. I’m sorry, I should have warned you a bit better about the things around here.” It was unlike Daniel to not explain something fully, but he also didn’t want to scare away Ethan either. “Oh, I know! I’m the cutest little animal.” He teased back. “But, I have no idea who or what could have caused this. I’ve mostly blamed it as an accident, something like a freak accident with no explanation. And, I would have driven myself crazy had I tried to search for any semblance of an answer.” Daniel gave a heartier laugh at the other’s next words, easily adding, “I think it’s safe to say that we’re getting old. Closer to middle age and retirement than I ever thought we’d get, to be honest.”

“You don’t burden me,” she started softly, a grin coming over her face. “Although, I do enjoy seeing drunk buffoon from time to time. You should drink tonight. If you want to stop for the time being, let this be your one last hoorah.” Her hand slide up his chest to his face, thumb rubbing over his cheek. She gave him a soft kiss, “I love you. And you’re the most dashing fella in here, not that I have a biased opinion or anything.”

It wasn’t something he liked to bring up all too often, especially knowing that Kiara would respond similarly to how she currently did, but the truth of the matter was that Daniel felt more like a burden some days, and he only wanted to make things easier for his wife. At her words, his frown had lifted slightly, before his brows both slightly raised. “A last hoorah, huh? I guess I can’t say no to that.” Kissing her back led him to a softer moment as he whispered against her lips, “I can’t even see how many people are here, but I know that you’re outshining everybody else, bar none.” He paused before adding, “Once the drunk buffoon comes out, would you care to enlighten me with a dance?”

Hearing his friends quiet words, Ethan smiled to himself. “You have more talent in one finger than I do in my entire body.” Not only was he being honest with himself, Ethan fully believed the amount of talent Daniel had as an author. Daniel’s writing moved as much as any play or stage production, and Ethan often had read his friends works for fun. “I can’t wait to spend time with you both.” He led the way, moving to the table he had occupied before Daniel had entered, while speaking. “This town… It certainly is something special. You did mention it but I never truly thought I would ever run into the types of people I have met while here.” His thoughts moved towards meeting just the few strangers that he had met on campus alone, however, he pushed them aside as his friend spoke. He clung to his words, a worried frown crossing his brow. “So, you went from being able to see, to being blind rapidly?” Ethan repeated the words, just to clarify. “I mean, I can see why you would be confused by that. But… You are in a really weird town, right? So maybe something happened here and it affected you? I know I’m not a doctor, but it just seems really odd.” He drummed his fingers on the table as he thought, processing it and attempting to mentally put him in his friends shoes. “Regardless of what caused it, I’m just glad you’re safe. You’re still Daniel, whether you see or not my friend. And you losing your eyesight isn’t a way to get rid of me so don’t think that changes our friendship. You can’t get rid of me that easily. In fact, you’ve just provided me with a fun challenge.” 

“Oh, now you’re just being too kind. You’re not gonna ask me to loan you money or something, right?” He teased the other still, falling back into their old ways just as if they had never left off from each other. “She’ll love that. You’ll have to come over for dinner sometime. Kiara’s been...better than magnificent, plus, we’d love to both catch up on how you’ve been. I can’t tell her all your dirty secrets.” Daniel felt a half smile pulling up before he took his seat carefully and let himself relax for the moment. “Those types of people...you gotta be careful about them, alright? It’s a safe haven, yes, but, also, there is danger here too. I just want you to be safe, alright?” Daniel had certainly spent some time there already, and was still not used to the place sometimes. As he listened to the other’s words, it really reiterated how weird the whole thing seemed to come to be. “Yeah, I...I have no doubt that there was some sort of magic involved, I just don’t know who or what happened. And it’s not like I’ve gotten any answers about it either. Which just leaves me to live with it, the best I can.” It didn’t take long for the smile to return to his expression of previous confusion as he added, “You know I would never want to get rid of you. I’m still Daniel, and you’re still Ethan, though, it’s professor Ethan now, if I’m not mistaken, right?”

A light chuckle escaped her as he stole the drink before she could touch it. “Fair enough, better safe than sorry.” An easy change for something they both wanted, leaning into Daniel as she thought about getting to enjoy the night with him. “There’s no one I’d rather be here with,” Kiara stated, a hand going to rest on his chest. “I always did love seeing you in a suit.”

“I’m sorry dear—” Daniel realized that it seemed to be a little unfair for him to be the only one drinking. “Perhaps we both give it up while we’re trying. It only seems fair. I already burden you enough with every other aspect of my life. Better not make you have to deal with the drunk buffoon I am too.” His grin pulled at his face while he set the drinks down. “Oh yeah?” Daniel let his now free hand run over the fabric of her dress at her shoulder, where it seemed the fabric turned into sequined sleeves. “And I always loved seeing you in a dress.”
