The Art of Getting By
Applying for jobs
I have been searching for jobs online and here are a few I have been applying for:
Laura Ashley e-commerce photographer:
‘The future’
‘The future’ is pretty much the most terrifying topic someone can mention at the moment. Although, I have made huge amounts of effort to contact a range of photographers for opportunities, as well as collaborating with people in various parts of the industry which have offered me masses of chances for the future as possibilities. I am excited to see what happens with the degree shows and to meet as many people as possible there, it should really be an intense networking event, as well as a showcase of all our work. Currently, I am hoping that after working my current part time job until the end of July that I will have some chances set up with photographers I have messaged. I will also be contacting more magazines to submit my work. As well as looking for graduate level jobs and continuing my networking. The aim is to hopefully move as close to London as possible after July, with some kind of sure income to support me. However, whilst still in Norwich I hope to continue working with the shops i produced lookbooks for, creating online content for them and to help get more experience. As well as contacting further Norwich based companies to photograph various things, anything for more experience and a chance of exposure.
But currently, I am mourning the end of this incredible three years. The amount I have learnt has been immense, and I have really opened my soul to photography and found that I am actually okay at it. I know I still need to develop areas such as studio practice and moving image, but these will come with time, and hopefully with further assisting experience. This degree has taught me more than I ever thought possible, and I have developed massively during this period, not only my photography, but personally too. It has all be incredible, thank you.
David N Drake
I love the work of David Drake and had been telling Ellen about this, when she happened to meet him through a mutual friend. She found out that he is actually based in Norwich and this furthered me to find out that he currently has an exhibition at Flint hairdressers, which I hope to go and see later this week.
I thought this was too much of a good opportunity not to contact him, and took the chance to ask if he had chance to meet up for a drink and to discuss the industry and his work.
‘Hi David,I am a third year photography student at NUA and love your work. In particular the work you produced for The 1975, which has inspired me greatly, combined with the music from their albums. I am hoping to see your exhibition in Flint this week, when will it be showing until? I wondered if one day it may be possible to meet for a drink and discuss the industry and your work if you have some free time; I would be really interested in talking to you?Huge thanks for your time, I hope you have a lovely day Danielle’
He said he would be happy to meet me for a drink in a couple of weeks! I am so excited!
Editorial- Pay
I found a site which shows the experience of a photographers and how much they got paid for working on various magazines.
Dazed & Confused Magazine £75 - £100 per assignment. Portrait, Assignment work, 2014 Sometimes can push for extra to cover film and developing costs, but usually not. Speed of payment - Up to 3 months
The New York Times $250 a day. Portrait, Assignment work. 2013 Photographer keeps copyright Travel expenses not covered for last assignment. First assignment never received payment. Speed of payment - 2 weeks or less
Vice £100 per day - Reportage, Assignment work. 13 images total (2014) No copyright discussed, have used images in other articles but sent request to photographer. Covered travel costs plus film and processing Speed of payment - 1 month
i-D magazine £0 - Portrait, Assignment work (2014) Contacted me to shoot some “street style” portraits for a section on their website. When I asked for the budget they said they didn’t have a budget for online content.
This shows just how little this kind of work pays, and how the advertising actually is where the money is, editorial work pays little to nothing. This is something I need to consider for my future, as editorial is definitely something that interests me more, but I will need to be able to build a stable income, which will need to come from advertising jobs or various other income sources.
Skills Audit
This is the skills audit I posted a year ago. Much of the information is still true, obviously the skills are all still true, I can still do all these things, many of them now to a higher level of competence.
I have developed my knowledge of studio lighting in the past year, having assisted a fashion photographer who uses studio flash lighting. This really helped my development and emphasises how much I can learn when I assist photographers- showing the importance of continuing to do so. i have been in contact with many more photographers and other professionals of the industry which has allowed me to develop more contacts and also far more knowledge of the industry and routes and careers that can be developed.
i have also furthered my use of InDesign since last year, having designed two books of my own myself using this programme. The books look professional and this is reflective of the fact I have taken the time to develop my understanding of this programme and the way in which it works.
The other point I wanted to develop was my use of digital back medium format, this is something I addressed very early on this term. I shot using studio flash to replicate natural light, and did this on a digital back medium format. I know have a good understanding of this- alongside my fairly experienced knowledge of 120mm medium format.
I still need to learn to drive at some point, as I think this will be helpful in the future to get to locations easily and when transporting equipment.
A year on from this skills audit and I have developed upon these skills, but also learnt new ones such as editing, designing and hand binding books. Book binding is now something I know multiple techniques in, and something I want to continue to develop in the future, and continue to look at self publishing.
In the past year I have shot a band, who are growing in success, as well as pieces for fashion Instagrams, along with 3 fashion lookbooks. These commissions and commercial experience have helped me massively in confidence, management and understanding, but are also vital parts of my CV now.
Ben Stockley
This is an image Ben Stockley produced for The New York Times, it shows how he has adapted his style to a commissioned piece. This style of work is one that is at time similar to mine, although a bit cleaner, and working for a client like The New York Times and capturing people and their environments for magazines is something I think I would really enjoy adapting my style to.
Letterhead
I designed a simple letterhead, just using my logo, email address, website and telephone number. If I need to write a note or similar to someone then I can use this to include my details. I had one previously, but the one uses my updated logo
Zara Photography Job
I saw this post on Instagram of Zara looking for a photographer. I sent my new CV and a PDF of my digital portfolio, as well as a link to my website.
Obviously, Zara is a huge brand, but the fact they have taken to Instagram for this search is interesting, and may indicate they are looking for someone a bit different. With the huge amount of followers they have it is likely they will receive massive amounts of applications, but it is always worth trying regardless.
Printing costs
The cost of printing for my Sleep Deprived book and American Dream book in total was £15. This cost is less than I expected and means that they would be possible to reproduce at a cost that would allow for them to be sold at a price I would deem reasonable.
BJP Breakthrough awards
I found that we could get 35% off the entry fee to the BJP breakthrough awards, which made my mind up about also entering a series of images. The standard of competition for this kind of award is huge, and looking at past winners the images are beautiful, but I felt it was worth a shot anyway.
GGS mounting
This mounting company in Norwich is so much cheaper than Metro or Printspace, and both Ellen and James have used their services and say the quality is good. This means that I could now possibly get frames and mount images to create a variety of images in different but coherent ways. I would need to decide what type of mount and the material I would want for this though.
Promotional Package- Business cards
I received my business cards in time for submission. I got 7 designs, all with the same logo and information on the back. I thought they would be a good thing for people to take away from the exhibition and they will have a visual cue of my work as well.
However, the images are a bit duller than the actual files, and are not the most amazing quality, but I guess this is to be expected on a card so small.
The cards did come with some having white edges down the right side, which was a real shame, however I have managed to save a lot of them by trimming them down. I did contact moo about this, and they are going to do me a free reprint and say they will try and correct this problem. This will mean i will actually have 200 photo business cards in the end. Below shows the issue I had with the white line down the side, compared to one which was printed correctly.
LGA management
I found LGA management from the photographer Jens Langkjaer, who is represented by them in London, New York and Paris. And I was very surprised to find that they represent Annie Lebovitz, I’m not sure why I found this so surprising, but they represent her in Europe by ‘special arrangement’ and none of her work is featured on their website.
They represent quite a lot of photographers, more than most agencies I have seen, and they all seem to be rather large and well established photographer.
I can look through these photographers and view their work, although they are too large in the photographic world for me to assist them anytime soon.
Artist Statement
I updated my artist statement for my most recent body of work, which will be shown at the graduate exhibitions. This statement will be shown in the catalogues so needs to be tightly formed and suitable. I tried to avoid stating what my work does and makes the viewer feel, instead showing the ideas I am exploring and what I intend to show from this.
‘Danielle Keane intends to create intimate and explorative portraits of young adults, expressing their personality and individuality.
Her current body of work investigates the transitional period between youths, and the culture of this, to adulthood, along with the individuals in this transitive state and the environments in which they surround themselves.
The project is rooted in the desire for tangibility and physicality, challenging the digital era and the idea of childhood before the millennials through the choice of medium. ‘
American Dream final book
I created my final American Dream book in the same way to the Sleep Deprived one, as I wanted to show consistency through the books so that it would be possible for a viewer to see that they are made by the same person without necessarily seeing my name.
This book is exactly what I imagined when I decided what kind of book I wanted to make, and I am really happy with the finished result. I think this is the perfect way to embody this series of work, and gives it a professional appearance, but it is still possible to see that it has been handmade with care.
I added a label to the spine of this book too.
