Merthyr Rising

Sometimes you chance upon a photography essay that really strikes a chord. That happened when we came across Merthyr Rising by Tom Johnson and Charlotte James...and it struck even more of a chord when we spotted one of our AW15 skirts in the mix.

We were stunned by this off-kilter documentary photography project in which the photographer and stylist travelled to Charlotte's native Merthyr Tydfil and met up with the locals. Armed with high-fashion garb, they shot portraits of interesting local faces they encountered in the pub, outside the supermarket, or walking past a block of flats. The result is a refreshing editorial full of flavour and personality, while two young sisters get starring roles. The cheeky, fiery-haired pair could pout any self-respecting supermodel right off the catwalk. Yowzers! Gorgeous work, beautifully executed. Hats off to Tom and Charlotte.

First up: Hair by Mari Ohashi

We worked with wizards Mari Ohashi for Bumble and bumble and Niamh Quinn for MAC Cosmetics, and they gave us the lowdown on the look, and how to achieve it at home. First up, Mari gave us the lowdown on the hair element. Inspired by the 80s club, Studio Paradiso, Amsterdam, she decided to build sporty, sweaty, party vibes into the look.

Get the look with Bumble and bumble: Use water spray and full form mousse all over the hair and mist down with booster spray on the roots of a horseshoe section. Blow dry with a wide tooth comb to give some lift and create the comb mark, before rough drying the rest of the hair. Apply Sumowax on the roots of front half of hair and blow dry again with comb to reshape the front. Tong some hair to give it movement and take some hair from both sides and make a knot on the back of head and secure with pins. Spray some Cityswept on mid-to-ends to give some texture and separation. Finish with misting down holding spray on front and side of hair to give hold and shine.
