Complaints increase about homeless people in Montréal's STM
The issue with trying to get them to a shelter is that the intention is still to displace them: hide homelessness and sanitize the city. As long as homeless accommodation, resources and aid are not appropriated by culture and the everyday built environement, homelesness and its associated aggression will never get better.
People have got to stop complaining about people sleeping, sitting, eating in public spaces. Where would you prefer them to go and who are you to tell people to move? Especially when they have nowhere to go. Its so inconsiderate.
Another issue is, during instances of aggression by a homeless person, homeless people are always reported as aggressors, almost predators to fear. Aggression by a homeless person is NEVER understood as being caused by the state of homelessness. Even if mental health is involved, homelessness HAS to be seen as a violent force onto a person that prompts aggression.
The burden is always put on the homeless person for attacking someone. I am saying we have normalized the conditions of homeless to the point that WE feel ENTITLED to GENERAL safety and protection and RESPECT from homeless people while we witness them live under violent conditions.
The STM interventants should be better trained, shelter and homeless-friendly infrastructure should be provided in ALL publicly transited spaces and at the very least, loitering should be allowed.
