Reading The Work
The reading had become a very slow work in progress since school has resumed but I am nearing the end. The book has brought up many different fictional aspects of life with magical theaters and different doors, leading to different parts of Harry Haller’s life. A common theme I have noticed is the theme of escaping time. Haller is able to go through different aspects of his life which occurred during his childhood all the way up to his adult self. This book makes you think just like the main character and stop and think about who you are and how you got there.
Reading the Work
I have read heavily yesterday and this morning, but periodically having to look up words and characters mentioned that I am unfamiliar with. The author Herman Hesse uses real people, such as famous poet Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe and others. Hesse did not list his full name but when I looked up who Goethe was I learned he was a famous writer. One of his middle names happens to be Wolfgang which I do not believe is a coincidence, considering the title of the book is Steppenwolf. I am making small connections such as those through out my time reading but the book is still foreshadowing a series of events that have not happened yet. The book is touching on many different aspects of Harry Haller’s life which makes the story seem very real.
Reading the work
The character Harry Haller (steppenwolf) lives a life with physical pain because of his ageing body, and no longer enjoys his days on this earth because they all seem to be the same boring day. He can’t remember the last bit of excitement he has had mostly because the days blur together, and nothing exciting has happened to him. I can kind of relate because ever since spring break ended i’ve been feeling like everything else is not very exciting. I am waiting for a turning point in this negativity in both the book and real life. Ill post again when i find it.
Reading the work
So spring break is over, I should probably be getting done with my book...but I am not quite there yet. I have some catching up to do. As far as my actual book goes I will recap. The preface sets up the story very well with a different narration from an outsiders view on the main character Steppinwolfe. It is eloquently detailed, and interesting which I am very great full for. I am motivated to get through the book by our next class meeting.
My Tribe
I am from the tribe of big families.I am from the tribe where my house is never quiet, the fridge is only full for a a few minutes, and the people are always moving. Our parents love us all, but can never afford to take us to the mall. My family events are so big, every Easter we need to rent out a hall.(Wow, sick rhyme right?) In a big family you grow up fast, and always remember who will be there for you, Your family.
My querencia could be many places, but my best memories are with my friends and family. My cottage would be my querencia but since I'm not a loud to do that I will do the next best thing, My garage. In my garage I get a lot done. I work on many things with my Dad and friends. I also learned almost everything I know about cars, boats, dirt bikes, motorcycles, jet skis etc. I grow as a person by learning patience, and continuously challenge my self. My time spent in the garage is generally getting ready for the summers up north where I will be able to use all the vehicles, and enjoy my time. My garage is my querencia because it is where I am comfortable and where I can be with people I like.
What is Tayo’s Querncia?
This book goes into many different aspects of Tayo’s life but a key theme is belonging. Tayo doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere, due to his diverse ethnicity. He isn’t fully Indian nor white, but isn’t that America? Today if you are born in America you are simply American. Leslie Marmon Silko, shows the path of how many different races come together beside the fact they come from different places.
Commander’s Wives, What are They Good For?
These are 3 First Ladies, lets see what their lives are like and compare them to Commander’s wives. All three of these women have limited time to spend with their husbands, because as the president they are very busy. The commanders are also busy but when they have free time, the Commander chooses to spend it with Offred opposed to Serena Joy. Serena’s only “responsibility” is to accompany her husband and she has no other purpose. These First Ladies job is similar. They don’t have to be a mom, clean up, decorate, walk the dogs, nothing. They have no responsibility much like commander’s wives but they have the freedom and power to occupy their time with something else. For example First lady Nancy Reagan supported a cause to Save wild Panda’s and Michelle Obama’s Cause to have School lunches become healthier. They both came up with little things to occupy their time while their husbands help run the country. Commander’s Wives however don’t have the freedom to make those choices, they are only in charge of their house hold which causes the tension among Serena and all of the other females in the Commander’s life. Serena is constantly competing for the commanders attention among the other women.
Atwood?
The ending of Handmaid’s Tale posed some small questions for me but I was very content with how it ended. When we were talking about endings there were a ton of different examples, but really only three main categories of endings; The big happy ending that the entire story was leading up to, the devastatingly sad ending which is completely opposite of your “fairytale” ending, And then theres the cliff hangers which fall in between the other two endings on the satisfaction scale. Atwoods ending was indeed a cliff hanger but I also think it was the happy ending she and the audience was waiting for. Yes, there was speculation of who exactly took Offred, but does it matter? The entire story Offred was waiting for a “way out.” Whether the van was taking her to the resistance or to the colonies, it doesn't really matter because she is at least out of the world she dreaded being apart of.
Why do Humans need Acceptance?
After reading on, I have found myself enjoying Ceremony but I still think it is an unusually scattered book. Leslie Marmon Silko’s Unwillingness to provide chapters or a narration without poems that seem to be there to add confusion makes this book very very different. I believe Silko did this intentionally and I am interested to discuss the different moves she has made in class. I am also looking for some clarity when it comes to poems.
I would also like to point out why Tayo seems to be so bitter, as well as sick, and crazy. There is talk of the war but I don’t think it has to do with the PTSD. It is more social, and that is why Tayo is throwing up, crying, having these panic attacks. He doesn’t feel accepted with the human race. He blatantly talks about what it feels like to be accepted when they are buying drinks at the bar, and during the war he was accepted by everyone. Now he is an outcast, can’t even touch the lady at the bus depots hand when she is counting change. Tayo feels like he isn’t worth anything after he had served his time in the war and he no longer has a purpose in this society. Humans always need acceptance but I didn’t understand why so I looked it up. The “best answer” on why humans need acceptance is as follows;
“Best Answer: Many, many years ago, early humans lived in packs, hunted together, gathered together, and protected each other. If one of the individuals wasn't pulling their weight in the tribe, they would be ostracized, and more likely than not, they would be dead within three days. Without his or her friends to hunt and protect them, they will die. Modern humans have carried that mentality over. It's just one of those traits that has survived evolution for thousands of years. It has been proven that people with less human contact during the "critical period" of their development (between 6 months and 3 years, or so) are nearly incapable of integrating into society.”
The first 20pages are about as confusing as this picture. I look at it feel like I understand what's happening and continue to read and realize I don't get what's going on. The preface seemed to be insightful and give the book a setting and a purpose but then the story began and it felt like I was looking at 3 Wooden beams when at first I saw all four. It really made the beginning of the book hard to enjoy. I was used to Atwood's way of writing because everything had some type of logic or purpose, but the Ceremony trails off into different directions with intermittent poems that confuse me even more then before...hopefully things clear up in the next 30 pages.

The Aunts sparked a heated coversation yesterday because many people thought the Aunts were oppressive towards other females. It didn't make sense but we also made a note of Atwood's purpose to create tension among the women. Many women say it would be very easy to rebel but when your being monitored and your life is on the line, it is different when you are actually in the situation
Picking the wprk
Picking the work was not the hardest choice, because I was very open minded. I want to enjoy the book but if I don't connect with the text, I can always look at it in a different light, that might make it more enjoyable for me. Because our books had to be fiction I was t afraid of picking a dry or boring book. However I am concerned about the criticism on my book. The author, Ray Bradbury is well liked, not many people criticize his work. This will be my biggest challenge moving forward
Competition blinds you to who your real enemy is. Today we discussed what Atwood's purpose was for making the female characters have a competitive attitude toward each other. Why would they want to fight each other? Why would this Gladiator want to fight the lions? He doesn't but the people above him give him no choice but to fight. The women are the other lions who were put there and fight simply for survival. They both do not see who the real enemy is. The kings and queens that allow this and encourage fighting are the real enemies. They plan it out and yet the man still fights the lion? He should be fighting the man in charge of the colosseum. The King. In Atwoods book, the men (commanders) are the kings who sit and watch women fight. They watch women fight for their freedom, fight for their lives against one another, which is what the men want. They are easier to control of they are wearing each other apart. If they were smart/physically capable they should fight the men who are treating them like useless pawns (unless they can reproduce) who deserve no rights and no freedom. That is why Atwood gives the females this competitive attitude one another, to show the audience that not all the females know who the Real enemy is.
