Today I wrote a JavaScript function for the Google Docs spreadsheet. It is a function that will count the number of rows that has a background color. I do a lot of highlighting in my spreadsheets so this will come in handy for me. I sent it to be published for public use.

This is a good, easy to understand video on Dependency Injection. It also talks about the 2 types of dependency injection. (Constructor, and Setter) Dependency Injection is something I have regularly do, but I never actually knew the formal name for it.
Extremely inspiring and influential.

Java String Comparison
I've been playing around with Android development recently, and that means working with Java. Today I made the mistake of trying to compare two different string using == . After quickly figuring out something was wrong, I learned this:
Comparing Strings: ==, .equals(), .compareTo(), ...
To compare Strings for equality, don't use ==. The == operator checks to see if two objects are exactly the same object. Two strings may be different objects, but have the same value (have exactly the same characters in them). Use the .equals() method to compare strings for equality. Similarly, use the .compareTo() method to test for unequal comparisons. For example,
String s = "something", t = "maybe something else"; if (s == t) // Legal, but usually WRONG. if (s.equals(t)) // RIGHT if (s > t) // ILLEGAL
if (s.compareTo(t) > 0) // CORRECT>

Nullable Ints (and other types)
Today I learned about nullable int types in C#. From my understanding, it is simply a way to have an integer in your code that can be set to null.
To declare one simply type a question mark directly after the int keyword.
For example:
int? myInt;
myInt = null;
You can do the same for other types too. This was new to me!

HTML 5 Demo Game

This tutorial gave me the idea (as well as the background). I adding in more sprites to collide with and bound to player to the canvas, so the player cannot move outside of it. It was really easy and fast to create this demo and I hope to create more in the future.
I came across this great blog post/book by a professional programmer for 32 years named Ed Weissman. It is very long but a great read.
Refactoring - Extract Method C#
Today I learned about the refactoring operating Extract Method in C# and Visual Studio.
To completely oversimplify it, it is this very cool way to create a method from a chunk of code that is already written.
All you do is:
highlight the chunk of code you wish to put into a method
Right click
Hover over Refactor
Click Extract Method
Enter a name for the Method and click OK.
Then a new method is created for you and a method call replaces the chunk of code. For a more detailed explanation: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0s21cwxk.aspx
I would have used this all the time, had I known about it!
C# params keyword
Today I learned about the params keyword in C#. If you have a method parameter that is a list or an array you can use the params keyword to fill that variable when calling the method.
For example, here is the method:
public static void UseParams(params int[] list) {
for ( int i = 0 ; i < list.Length ; i++ ) Console.WriteLine(list[i]); }
Here is a call to that method:
UseParams("one", "two", "three");
As you can see, this can prove very useful when you need to populate a list or array where the number of arguments can vary.
Fundamental Attribution Error
"In social psychology, the fundamental attribution error (also known as correspondence bias or attribution effect) describes the tendency to over-value dispositional or personality-based explanations for the observed behaviors of others while under-valuing situational explanations for those behaviors. The fundamental attribution error is most visible when people explain the behavior of others. It does not explain interpretations of one's own behavior—where situational factors are often taken into consideration. This discrepancy is called the actor–observer bias.
As a simple example, if Alice saw Bob trip over a rock and fall, Alice might consider Bob to be clumsy or careless (dispositional). If Alice later tripped over the same rock herself, she would be more likely to blame the placement of the rock (situational)."

Today I learned (TIL) that "else if" in Oracle PLSQL is not elseif, but elsif. They REALLY couldn't fully spell else??
When I set up my wife's new laptop I immediate went to ninite to download all the applications she uses. You just check all the applications you want to install and ninite allows you to download and install them all at once. I can not recommend it enough!
f.lux
F.lux is a unique software that changes the brightness of your computer automatically depending on the time of day. So during the day F.lux makes your computer screen brighter than at night. It is pretty amazing on the eyes and for someone like me who is on their computer a lot, sometimes before bed it is fantastic. You really don't even notice the brightness changes when you use it. Try turning it off again after using it for a couple of days and it will become apparent how drastic a change it is.
