So, you're in the market for a used bird cage. Do you know what you're looking for? Whether you are looking for an antique, a new or a used bird cage, you still have to ask yourself the same questions. How big? What kind - something to use with a bird cage stand or something to sit on a cabinet. How quickly do you need the cage?
Once you've got those questions handled, it's time to start your search. If you are serious about finding a used cage for very little money, there are several places for you to go.
The first is to check out area flea markets and garage sales. This can be time consuming and use a lot of gas, so you might want to confine that search to one or two sunny weekend days. Another variation of this might be to look in the pet supplies section of your local newspaper.
If you haven't found the one you want there, check on the Internet. Try some of the sites you might never have thought of- Craigslist for example, or a listing of items in your community that are available for recycling.
If you do find one this way, check the cage for breakage and damage. You don't want to find out your bird has injured itself brushing up against a broken bar or door hinge with a sharp edge. Examine the finish on the cage closely. You don't want to buy a cage someone else has painted. You don't know what kind of paint they may have used and it could prove to be toxic to your pet.
If you've still struck out, it's time to move on to eBay. Almost any given day, you're sure to find something there. Don't get emotionally involved in the bidding process, though. You don't want to end up spending more money on a used cage than you would have if you simply had found a cheap bird cage. And, don't forget to add in any delivery charges to get the actual cost of the cage.
One concern in using a used bird cage is the fact that the previous bird may have been ill. To avoid this, you want to make sure you carefully clean and disinfect the bird cage. Don't take someone else's word that they already did that.

A lot of people misguidedly think that guinea pigs are simply a bigger variety of so-called pocket pets like hamsters and gerbils, but this is just not the case.
Whereas a hamster can live in a relatively small cage, cavies do require additional room. They don't take up as much space as a German shepherd but you need to be prepared to have adequate room available in order for your cavy to lead a hale and hearty, comfortable life.
One more thing to keep in mind is that these lovely creatures are likely to live longer than hamsters or gerbils. On average, a cavy lives 4-6 years and at least one that I've heard of has lived to the ripe old age of 11. So if you purchase a this pet now, you need to be ready to make him or her a part of your family for an extended period of time.
Bear in mind that long-haired guinea pigs shed a lot; the areas around their cages need to be cleaned up regularly. Rough-haired guinea pigs also shed quite a bit, although not as much as the long-haired varieties. However, smooth-coated cavies do not. Most shed very little, so they are perfect for families that don't want to spend most of their time vacuuming up after their new pet. If you're looking to save energy and time avoid wire mesh cage bottoms. Although easier to clean, they cause sores on your cavy's sensitive little feet.

Rats need a secure, roomy, aquarium enclosure with a screen lid which can be secured firmly. The way you see them enclosed in the pet store is very effective and easy to maintain. Rats are very intelligent and clever about opening things. They can also squeeze through very small openings and will do so given the opportunity, so be careful about securing the top of the cage.
Use wood shavings or recycled newspaper bedding to a depth of at least an inch in the bottom of the cage. Change it daily or every other day ot the least or it will smell and become a messy job no one wants to tackle. Once a week empty the cage of everything and wash the inside -- bottom especially -- with mild soap like well diluted Simple Green, and water. It does not have to be hosed down, just washed, rinsed and dried with clean water and rags. It isn't difficult if you do it regularly. If you don't, it becomes a chore and the cage will be smelly between times.
Provide climbing and exercise equipment for your rat so boredom doesn't set in. Remember, these are intelligent animals. They need something to do and exercise. A running wheel is a good thing to have. There are other rat friendly toys you will find in your pet store as well. Check them out.
Rats are rodents, like mice, gerbils, rabbits and guinea pigs. One thing all rodents have in common is is that their teeth grow continuously. Because of this trait they need to chew or their teeth will grow too long and they will be unable to eat. Once again, your local pet store can provide supplies to satisfy the need to chew. Some of the things you may find are rawhide or wood toys. Rats enjoy chewing up cardboard toilet paper or paper towel rolls, too. They don't eat it. They just chew it into little bis.

When you have a pet at your place you need to be very careful while keeping them. As the pet becomes a part of your family and really get attached to the pet. Well when you have rabbit as your pet and is also making a mess of his cage then you need to constantly keep on cleaning them. It is not difficult to clean the cage and you can easily clean the rabbit hutch. A rabbit is a good family pet and will be very happy to live in a cage if it is cleaned properly. So make sure that you have a proper cleaning routine.
When you want to clean the cage open the door and remove rabbit, food, water and toys from the hutch. Please make sure that you are putting them at a safer place. You can use a dustpan as a scoop to remove the dirty rabbit lither from the enclosed part of the hutch. If you are in a hurry you can just remove the soiled part, but make sure that you are removing all the lither and replace it with fresh lither at least one in a week.
After removing the lither spray the cage with a non-toxic and a pet-friendly cleanser. By doing this you will be able to get rid of some of the smell. Then refill the cage with a good, fresh and clean lither. The amount of lither will depend on how much your rabbit likes to snuggle in the lither and add only the appropriate amount in the cage. You can also put more litter in the corner that the rabbit uses as a bathroom. The best lither can be cedar, pine, or recycled paper litter.

Today, the fur that are currently used by the fur industry come from farm-raised Chinchillas.
These rodents live in burrows or crevices in rocks in their natural habitat. They are known for their being agile jumpers and can actually jump up to 6 ft or 1.8 m. They have several defensive methods to protect themselves from predators. This includes their ability to spray urine and release fur if they are bitten. In the wild, the diet of chinchillas consist of plants, fruits, seeds, and small insects. On the contrary, this kind of diet would irritate the digestive system of those that are raised in homes as pets. On the contrary, domestic ones would love to have hay-based foods in their plate. Chinchillas are social animals, they live in a group called herd. Their gestation period would last about 111 days and that is why their litters are born with eyes open and complete furs.
In choosing a one of these to keep as a pet, the role of Chinchilla breeders play a very significant role. Breeders are the ones who make them mate and then carefully keep the litters in good condition. Chinchilla breeders are found in every local area where you live. If you are looking for the best breeder in town, all you need to do is search for them even online. In some cases, you can always ask those who have raised these rodents themselves. In approaching the Chinchilla breeders, a good reputation is necessary. Most of the time, people keep them in one or two numbers only.
Chinchillas are playful animals. The cage should be wide enough for the animal to play around. In addition to that, it must also have ramps, wheels and even little boxes for their playtime. They can always amaze you by the way they move. They are highly nocturnal animals and they tend to be more active during the night. Thus, place the cage in an area where no noises can disturb them during the daytime. In the kind of food on the other hand, hay is a Chinchillas favourite. Most of all, you must also know how to perform a dust bath on them. You can always ask the store to have the dust bath tools brought to you.

Are you aware that chinchillas were not kept as pets before? People are hunting them to take away their soft fur. The disappearance of these creatures was caused by killing of 80 to 100 chinchillas in order to produce a single fur coat. Let us give credit to the passionate people who courageously caught eleven chinchillas and took time to secure them. This brilliant move gave us a chance now to keep chinchillas as our pets. Here are some amazing facts to know about your new pet.
o Chinchillas love night life. They like to do their activities at night and spend their day sleeping. o Chinchillas love a peaceful environment. They are too particular with stress and noise. o Chinchillas are intelligent. They have the ability to socialize with their owner. They can also detect immediately if they are unsecured and will find way how to get away from danger. o Most chinchillas do not want to be cuddled or held for a long period. Make sure to be careful in handling them. Use two hands so they will feel more secured. Children are not advised to have chinchillas as pets since kids do not have control over their emotion thus causing chinchillas to shy away. Chinchillas should also be avoided by people who have animal allergies. o Chinchilla needs to chew regularly to maintain their healthy teeth. Give them a friendly toy that they can chew. Chewable toys are better compared to chewing cage bars and food bowls. o Chinchillas are able to make sounds when they are chewing, pulling or pushing the things inside their cage or running on their wheel.
Chinchillas are good pets. You do not need to exert so much effort to care for them. You only need to give a special time and a little patience as you deal with them so you can earn their trust immediately.

Are you trying to find the most useful bedding for your hamster so she can play and sleep in comfort? Providing your pet hamster with suitable bedding material is extremely important since the environment she lives and sleeps in will have long-lasting effects on her health, temperament and life span.
These creatures usually sleep during the day and they love burrowing. One way to satisfy their burrowing instincts is by providing quality and suitable bedding material at the bottom of the cage. What are the commonly used materials for the beddings of the hamster?
It's not a good idea to use towels or blankets for bedding because you will soon find these things wet and dirty! The bedding materials should be at least 2" thick. That way, your pet will find enjoyment in burrowing. The material should be able to mask odors of urine to prevent a smelly cage and we've found that the absolute best material are wood shavings.
Years ago, most hamster owners used pine or cedar wood shavings. Recent studies showed that these materials contained phenols that can cause respiratory and liver problems. Such chemicals are present in high amounts in cedar shavings and in the case of pine shavings, hamsters usually suffered from allergies. Irritation and sneezing were also evident when the beddings contained sawdust.

Although they have a friendly temperament, it may nip if startled or frightened. Resist the temptation to pick up a sleeping hamster. Remember that a hamster is low on the food chain, and sudden movements will arouse a natural instinct for self-defense. When reaching for your hamster, be sure the hamster sees your hand, and move slowly. Offering treats, such as sunflower seeds, on your open palm will give your hamster a positive association with your hand, and make it easier to pick up.
BASIC CARE
Campbell Dwarf Hamsters are easy to care for. In addition to the appropriate cage, a hamster wheel will be required for exercise. Toys are not only appreciated by the hamster, but are fun accessories to buy. Most important are chew toys, so that the hamster may keep his teeth properly trimmed. And of course, you will want to supply your hamster with appropriate food and purified water.
Treats may be given in the form of seeds, nuts and vegetables. It is important to avoid sugary treats, as this species is particularly susceptible to developing diabetes. With proper care, they may live longer than its life expectancy of two years.
HAMSTER FRIENDS
One advantage to this hamster is that it gets along with its cage mates, as long as they were introduced to the enclosure at the same time, as youngsters. Hamsters that display a tendency to fight with one another must be separated before they do harm. Males and females will reproduce abundantly, so it is important to keep them apart unless you already have homes lined up for the offspring.
COMPANION ANIMALS
This species is known for its inquisitive and endearing ways. Once you have provided the basic requirements of food and shelter, you will find an amusing companion animal in the Campbell Dwarf Hamster.

How many children do you have in your family? How big is your house? The more children you have, the more space is required. If there are too many people in a small house, everyone will feel uncomfortable. This is also true with hamsters. Once you decide to breed hamsters, you have to ensure that you can easily find new homes for the babies, or you will need to get enough cages to house the litter. Before you start breeding, you can talk to local pet shops or to friends, relatives, and co-workers to determine if they are willing to take some of the baby hamsters.
Cross breeding you should not be attempted. For instance, if you like Syrian hamsters, you will need to breed two Syrian hamsters. What if you only have a female or a male? This is not a problem. You can find another owner of a hamster of the same breed. Ask around your neighborhood or you can also ask for references from friends and acquaintances. Talk to the owner of the hamster and you can breed them with the agreement of sharing the load when it comes to finding homes for the babies!
The Syrian hamsters are more of the 'isolated' type and will want to live alone or in pairs. The dwarf hamsters are different. In fact, you can keep several dwarf hamsters (of the same sex) in a cage, and they will tend to live harmoniously as they grow up together. Remember that once you've determined the gender of the hamsters, you will need to keep them in separate cages - one for the male and one for the female. You see, when the hamsters reach the 'mating' age, you can see how things unfold naturally.
