The speaker seemed so awfully far away, even if they were standing directly in front of him. The words echoed through his mind, but he couldn’t seem to hold onto them at all. What were they saying? Something about a note. Something about his boyfriend? A note from his boyfriend. 

His hands reached out to hold the neatly folded piece of paper, fingers shaking as they wrapped around it. Dare he read it? Not in front of a stranger. There could be anything in there, could be wonderful or terrible or heartbreaking. Raphael’s brain echoed the words again, ‘isn’t here’. What did they mean by that? Of course Kaito was around, he always was. He couldn’t have gone far, done anything…

“N… no…” When it finally started to make sense, his legs seemed to shudder and shake under his weight, giving out and bringing Raphael to his knees. Kaito couldn’t have– No, but they said they found it next to him, that he wasn’t here to give it to him himself.

The letter held the key to make sense of it.

Opening it quickly, he scanned it for clues. For any sign that this stranger was lying, that Kaito wasn’t truly de– No no no, not dead, he’s still here! He was sure of it!

He was trying to comfort her, but that definitely didn’t feel like it helped in the slightest. Raphael wanted her to know that he worried about her well-being, and cared for her as a person, not just a fun obstacle on his heists. 

He enjoyed her company, but for what? Just to make her cry? No, that’s the opposite of what he wanted. Despite being something of a rival and often triggering anger in her, he just wanted to make her smile. Have her enjoy her time as much as he enjoyed spending it with her.

As soon as she spun around to bolt, his feet were following. Without even thinking, he was lurching forward to grab her, run after the girl with tears in her eyes. Nononono-- 

Catching up, he pulled her into a hug from behind, face pressing into her shoulder. “D... Why... D-Did I do something wrong...?” Voice in quiet bursts, Raphael heaved for breath, wrapping just a little tighter. “I was... n’t lying... It’s true...”

He wanted so desperately to forgive him. To find his father and find out why he left those years ago. He knew. He knew already that it wasn’t for his sake, no matter how many times he lied to himself to create that illusion. It wasn’t for him.

But there’s the selfish part of him inside that wanted to scream, to cry, to lash out at Isaac. He abandoned his own child in the city for his own gains, and left him without anyone to take care of him. Left him alone with his thoughts. Left him with the mess to clean up.

Left him.

“My father would...”

Would Isaac want his forgiveness? Part of him hoped he would, but a majority supposed he’d push him away or pretend it didn’t happen. It would never be like it was when he was a young, sickly but naive child. His father would never be that supporting and caring parent he thought he was, after so much had changed.
