A Deep Sea Fantasy, oil on canvas (1929) Charles Courtney Curran (American, 1861–1942) painted A Deep Sea Fantasy, capturing a magical world hidden beneath the waves. The scene features graceful sirens and mermen playing among the ruins of a dark, sunken city. In the 1920s, many artists still followed the older European tradition where sirens were magical women of the sea, but not necessarily half-fish.

By using soft blue light and rising bubbles, Curran makes the deep ocean feel like a peaceful, airy dream rather than a heavy or scary place. This Symbolist masterpiece shows his skill at blending real human forms with pure imagination to tell a story of mystery and wonder. Loc. Private collection.
