I am Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the blood of Old Valyria, and the blood of dragons. I am the daughter of King Aerys and Queen Rhaella, the sister of Prince Rhaegar and Prince Viserys.

So she had already met Elia.  He feigned personal slight by her comment about Elia.  One point for his sister and none for him.  Wasn’t that the way it usually worked?  Oberyn, however quickly let it slide and chuckled, dropping his “hurt” act.  “I would argue, but It is pointless since we both agree on that matter.”  The Dornish prince smirked as he sunk into the chair, glad that the princess was now smiling, even if at his own expense. 

“It is quite different from Sunspear,” he replied matter-of-factly.  Shrugging his shoulders now, he motioned lazily to the architecture around them, “Some of the architecture is similar.  Even the coast reminds me of home.”  Should he say that he wasn’t truly fond of the city itself?  It wasn’t terrible but the air it gave was on edge, and it even smelled of excrement that the people threw in the streets.  But that was the city itself.  The Keep was much different.

“Do you enjoy the city, princess?” He was now curious about her own thoughts of the place she lived in.  “Have you been anywhere else?”

There was a brief moment where Daenerys feared that she had actually offended the Martell, though the only outward showing was her rigid shoulders. Luckily, Oberyn relaxed and dropped the facade, meaning she relaxed too. The Princess didn’t even want to consider the headache it would create if he really had been slighted by her innocent quip.

“I can only imagine.” Daenerys looked to where Oberyn gestured and tried to visualize them sitting in Sunspear instead, with the sun beating down on them, even if it was colder than usual. “I bet you are eager to return home, are you not?” She wondered just how long the Prince’s ‘exile’ was. Did he just have to stay away until tempers were cooled?

“Other than the city, I have only ever been to Dragonstone.” The island of her birth had been quiet and foreboding, and even somewhat bleak the last time she’d been. It had a special place in her heart to be sure but Dany definitely preferred Kings Landing. It was much less lonely. “I enjoy it as much as someone can without having anything to compare it too. I imagine a place like Oldtown looks far better.”

☼ Elia couldn’t help but think how strange it was that she and the Princess sat across from one another and conversed as if they were old friends, rather than a future Queen and her subject. Her mother had always spoken so fondly of Queen Rhaella and the days they had spent together, never once indicating that there was any discomfort between the two, despite the power dynamic that existed. Yet her mother had always reminisced about the Queen as if they were equals. No doubt, Ariella Martell was a Queen in her own right in everything but title, but the Targaryens had always been depicted within the Realm as a superior power that was above even the Gods themselves. Elia knew that they too were mere men now that they had been stripped of their dragons. They were mere flesh and bone like the rest of them, yet she couldn’t shake the stiffness from her own posture that came as a result of sitting in front of the girl, not yet a woman, who would one day rule over her. She couldn’t imagine seeing herself and this girl - despite being her elder - as equals.

“It was pleasant, Your Grace.” She stared down at plate, which was quickly being filled by Princess Daenerys’s servants, feeling scrutinized despite the friendly smile upon the Princess’s face. “Your father’s realm is beautiful. I am glad I got the opportunity to see more of it.”

Mention of her father made her stomach flutter with nervousness. It was always the case with people other than immediate family who spoke of Aerys. Her mother, Viserys and Rhaegar all knew what was going on so there was no need for pretenses around them. Whilst they had to speak quietly, they could at least speak truthfully. The same could not be said for someone like Elia Martell. Daenerys felt compelled to either ignore any mention of the Mad King or down play the rumors about him. Right now, the former seemed like a better option.

“I’m glad to hear it, especially since I presume you are feeling the chill in the air more than anyone else. My brother Rhaegar and I appreciate you leaving the warmth and comfort of your homeland to celebrate this joyous occasion with us.”

Catelyn thought back to the many singers that came through Riverrun’s doors, performing songs about battles and history for her lord father and his court. When she was young, she was so joyous whenever any came because they were so exciting and seemed to sing so beautifully. But as she got older, the singers paid less attention to their talent and more attention to the story at hand; their voices became scratchy and their stories more “entertaining.” Except “entertaining” meant joking about how many women slept with the said “hero” and other immoral acts. 

Still, these singers were not The Traveling Kingsmen. These men were actors, not singers, and spoken of highly for their entertainment, so she hoped she would enjoy the show.

“I wonder why groups are so rare in Westeros! Riverrun had many singers, but never any that specialized in acting or storytelling–although we had our share of singers who thought they were great storytellers.” Cat said sarcastically.

Daenerys tried very hard not to laugh, but she could not help the giggle that escaped her. It wasn’t very nice to laugh at the expense of people who had committed their lives to performing and entertaining, often for the royal family’s benefit. Still, Lady Catelyn had a point that the Princess wholly agreed with.

“The Red Keep has had many too.” Though the singers had become increasingly reluctant to visit out of fear of not entertaining the King and thus getting punished by the mad man. “Though they all seem to perform the same songs over and over again. Not that I dislike songs about my ancestors, but I also like the others. Do you have a favourite, Lady Catelyn?”

“Oh no, Your Grace, I didn’t mean–” her tirade was abruptly cut off by the princess’ smile, and Lyanna was glad to realize that she had been joking. A chuckle of relief bubbled from her throat and she sat back, the tension leaving her body. “I’m sorry. My Septa always said I have a problem with phrasing things correctly.” She had a smart mouth that was bound to get her in trouble someday was a more accurate approximation of her Septa’s warning, and being in the Capital made her all the more aware of her alleged failings. Lyanna was not interested in becoming a lady, that much was true. But she had a duty to her House and her family. She did not like the thought of embarrassing her lord father and lady mother – especially not to the royal family. “I’m happy to hear it, Your Grace, truly. I wish you all the joy in the world.”

The wolf-maid took a bite of her food, impressed by the explosion of flavour in her mouth. Whatever the palace cooks put in their chicken gave it a sweet and tangy taste, so different from the usual fare at Winterfell. Lyanna enjoyed it enough to take another mouthful. If only excellent food could drive the apprehension that was plaguing her, the wolf-maid thought, she would gorge herself in everything King’s Landing had to offer. But she knew it was only a temporary diversion. Sooner or later, the realization that her life was spiralling out of control would come rushing back in, and with it would be the helplessness that Lyanna hated most. “My brother says he loves me, Your Grace. But I doubt it, for how can he love someone he does not know?” Ned believed Robert was a good man, but it does not mean he would be a good husband. She’s heard of the tales, of his bastard child back at the Eyrie, of the women he lies with. Lyanna did not wish to marry anyone, but especially not someone who would be unfaithful.

It was clear in the way Daenerys broached the topic that she knew of Robert, and the wolf-maid did not know how to feel. Was everyone aware that she was set to marry a man who could not keep to one bed? Her own lord father doomed her to such fate by agreeing to the engagement, a fact that pained Lyanna terribly. To accept it was to swallow a bitter draught she simply could not keep down, but what other option is there? “I fear clarity, Your Grace,” she admitted. “It’s hard not to when I’m not afforded a choice in the face of it. But I suppose it is a good match for our Houses, and I should feel very lucky to be chosen by the Lord of Storm’s End.” She gave the princess a smile that did not reach her eyes, and realized with no surprise that all she really felt was overwhelmed, powerless, and nauseous.

“I have a feeling that every noble little girl has heard something similar from their own Septa’s at least once in their lives.” For Daenerys, she had often been accused of slouching and sitting like a ragdoll, a far cry from the poised Princess that she was expected to be. Luckily, such imperfections were fixed with a swiftness of someone eager to impress. “Thank you, my lady.” She would have wished Lyanna the same but it all honesty, Dany did not think the wolf maid would find such joy, as sad as the thought was.

While both girls ate in a sort of companionable silence, Daenerys mulled over what Lyanna said. Robert had only met her on one occasion according to the Stark girl, how could he possibly love her after such a brief meeting? She and Rhaegar had a lifetime of memories made before they became husband and wife, Lyanna had not even a fraction of that. The wolf maid was very pretty and if the rumors were true and Robert liked to take many women to his bed, then would it be too forward of her to assume that the Storm Lord loved beauty more than the girl? “I hope you don’t think I am speaking out of turn, but perhaps he met a pretty lady who was to be his wife and thought of what his life would be like with her. Maybe he loves the idea and not the actual girl?”

Whiling having to wed a notoriously unfaithful man was not a fate Daenerys wished on someone who seemed as kind as Lyanna, the Princess could not help but feel like there were worse hands to be dealt. Her own mother, for example. Rhaella would probably prefer an unfaithful husband if it meant not being tormented and ravaged every time Aerys felt the urge. Dany could still remember the first time she’d heard her beloved Mama’s screams of pain rip through the air of Maegor’s Holdfast. “Perhaps you could try looking on the bright side of the matter? Whilst Lord Robert may not be the image of a perfect husband, there are worse men to be tied with.”

“That’s true enough,” he agreed quietly, nodding. And it was. They rarely all sat down together alone, his siblings and their mother; court was too full of people, each person pulled in different directions, dining with those they needed to dine with, rather than those they wanted to. But whenever they were afforded the chance, it was a comfort: it was easy, even with sparse conversation and tired smiles. Rhaegar grinned fondly at Dany’s snort of amusement, sinking back in his chair with his head tipped back in mirth. Heaving a mock-sigh, he leaned forward over the table and blinked up at her. “Daenerys - Dany - my favourite sister - ” he began, a laugh threatening to leave his lips, “ - may I please steal your food like the common thief that I am?” When she offered it, Rhaegar piled some lamb onto his own plate, pushing at it with a fork before taking a bite. 

He drew a sharp breath, letting his fork clatter back on the table. What are we to do? she asked, and yet he didn’t have a reply. They could only force laughter and fake smiles for so long; their lady mother was being used as a scapegoat and he wasn’t about to let the rest of the realm follow. “That’s not going to happen, Daenerys,” Rhaegar said firmly, reaching out for her hand. He looked around the garden below, noticing lone figures moving between the hedges, and dropping his voice lower. “No matter what Father tries, we’re not going to let it happen.” Not Dany, not Viserys - no one. The Mad King had spent terrorising them all long enough. “I fear it won’t be long before he something occurs.” Their wedding was fast approaching; right around the bend. “But if it does, you need never fear - ever.”

Daenerys pressed her mouth into a thin line but the urge to laugh made her lips quiver. The unimpressed facade did not last very long at all and soon she let out a laugh. “Well, when you beseech me so ardently how can I possibly say no?” The girl paused for a moment before narrowing her eyes at her brother. “Even with such an empty compliment. I am your only sister, of course I’m your favourite!”

Dany allowed Rhaegar to take her hand and drew whatever comfort she could from the contact. He was so firm in his statement that she almost believed him, but how could he make such a promise? Rhaegaer could not guarantee that their father would not explode at an inopportune time, no one could. All they were able to do was pray for the best. The way her brother said ‘we’re not going to let that happen’ made the Princess feel like some of the responsibility lay on her shoulders and while she did not mind the idea, Dany had no clue what to do. In matters regarding the Mad King, Daenerys had always deferred to Rhaegar and their mother to deal with Aerys. Now it would seem that she too might have to step forward and do her part. “How can you sound so certain about such a claim? You can’t know for sure, can you?”

Catelyn smiled at Princess Daenerys. She’s so pleasant, Cat thought, and felt glad that her future queen seemed hospitable, respectful, and friendly. Hopefully her brother is as kind and generous as her. 

“Oh I do not mind at all; I rarely ever drink wine, and certainly never this early either. Tea sounds lovely.” Cat smiled as one of the royal servants poured her some tea; it smelled delicious, like roses and honey.

Cat looked at the princess almost apologetically. She felt bad that everyone wanted to meet the Targaryens–they must all get so little rest! 

“You seem to be doing wonderfully despite the influx, so I hope you do not exhaust yourself too soon. Are you excited to see The Traveling Kingsmen performance? I hear they’re delightful.”

“Oh, I’m glad. It’s quite nice to meet someone so like minded.” Wine and ale flowed so freely almost everywhere the Princess went, it was hard to discern how anyone managed to keep a clear and sharp mind. Daenerys reached for her own cup and brought the steaming liquid to her mouth.

“Oh!” At the mention of the Travelling Kingsmen, Daenerys’ face lit up with animation. Indeed, she was excited to see them perform. “Yes, like you would not believe. Groups of performers are so rare in Westeros, I can scarcely believe that there has not been a troop over here before.”

“You are correct, princess, we have not met before,” he said matter-of-factly as he gracefully seated himself in the chair that was planted across from the Targaryen princess.  Swinging a leg over to rest on the other, he leaned back into the cushions, elbow on the armrest.  “I,” he started as his dark eyes flicked from her to a berry that he had picked from the plate on the table, “am Oberyn Martell.”  Immediately after stating his name, he placed the berry in his mouth, savoring the taste of the fruit.  All the while taking in the sight of the woman before him. 

“I wouldn’t blame you for confusing me with my siblings, but,” he smirked at the thought of their faces should he have said this around them, “I am the prettier one.”  The lighthearted comment was meant break the ice.  His positioning remained relaxed but his gaze traveled from her face to the lone Kingsguard that stood by.  The singular guard and two servants interested him when many other ladies of Westeros saw themselves tended to much more.  The revelation now intrigued him, but he dared not question her of it.  Perhaps he would later.

“Well then, it is a pleasure to meet you for the first time.” Ah, so she had been correct after all! Daenerys felt the barest hint of smug satisfaction, her old Septa would have definitely been proud by how quickly she’d discerned Prince Oberyn’s identity. Now that introductions were done with, the Princess could not help but feel curious. She knew of some altercation with one of House Martell’s vassals had lead to the Dornish Prince being discreetly sent away, though she was unaware of where he’d gone.

Daenerys grinned at the comment. “I might have believed you if I had not already met your kind sister whom if I may be so bold to say, is a little prettier than you.” She was intrigued by how... comfortable and relaxed Oberyn acted. It was as if he was dining with an old friend, not his future Queen whom he had just met. It was both odd and refreshing. “How are you finding Kings Landing?”

The princess was a beautiful woman, and in general all beautiful women unnerved him not a little. In recent memory, one beautiful lady had removed him of his words so completely that Brandon had had to make up for it–not that he’d been asked. He froze in place, glancing furtively at the garden below. Was that it? Was that their godswood? He couldn’t tell. He made himself look her in the eye and serve her the courtesies she was due.

“Yes–I am. I am Eddard Stark, your grace,” he said. “I have no wish to disturb you.”

More than accustomed to men becoming somewhat flustered around her, Daenerys sat and smiled politely and acted like nothing was happening until her visitor could collect himself. “Lord Eddard, it is a great pleasure to make your acquaintance. Allow me to reassure you that you are not disturbing me in the slightest. I know to expect passersby when I dine here, so it is no issue.” The Princess gestured to the food before her. “There’s more than enough for two if you would perhaps like to join me?”

Of course, Lyanna thought, if somewhat belatedly. It struck her now how foolish her words had been to imply that the princess was overwhelmed by the process she was not directly involved in ( at least until the day of her wedding comes at last ). But more than planning the wedding itself, Lyanna had meant the tireless way Daenerys had to greet all sorts of people who came to her to extend their congratulations. She imagined there must be a lot of them who wanted to see her and personally express their opinion on her marriage, and to have to keep a positive disposition for extended periods of time must be truly exhausting. But then again, some people are simply born to do it, and the princess might be one of them. Lyanna however, was not.

Without any experience on planning a wedding herself, the wolf-maid had no knowledge of the gruelling efforts it involved, though it only seemed natural for Daenerys to have a lot of help where it was concerned. She was a princess, after all. But at the same time, it seemed a little odd to have such small involvement in an event that affected one’s life so much as one’s own wedding. It was not an opinion Lyanna dared to voice, knowing little about the matter and all. But when her time comes, she wondered if it would be the same for her, and the thought dampened her already struggling mood. “I’m glad to know you have all the help you could need, Your Grace,” was all she said about the matter ultimately.

She nodded sagely at the princess’ reply, and ventured to ask another question. “Do you think he will be a good husband, Your Grace? I have not personally met the prince, but from what I’ve heard, everyone seems to have a high opinion of him.” Lyanna hoped she was not crossing any boundary by asking her question. She was truly curious, and in a way she was thinking of what’s in store for her when the time comes. Unlike her betrothed, Prince Rhaeger was known for being the ideal prince, just like the ones in the songs of old. If he was as chivalrous as people says he is, then Lyanna would feel it safe to be immensely glad for the princess, for she would be happy with him.

The wolf-maid picked up her knife and fork and started cutting up her piece of meat. Daenerys’ words made her momentarily pause and turn thoughtful, Stark-grey eyes clouding over with worries that had haunted Lyanna ever since her betrothal had been announced. “I don’t really know how I feel, Your Grace…” It was as close to the truth as she would dare to go, seeing as expressing her vehement objection to their engagement might be frowned upon. “We spent some time together when I visited the Eyrie, but I’ve not seen him since. If he’s here in the capital at the moment, he has not paid me a visit yet.” Lyanna set her silverware down and anxiously pressed her lips together. “All I really feel is this vast sense of uncertainty, like I’m walking around blind-folded. I suppose it’s bound to change at some point. Or at least, I hope so.”

“I am too, my lady.” Such was the life of a Princess and future Queen, she supposed. Though Daenerys couldn’t help but feel like she’d happily carry the weight of responsibility and duty on her shoulders alone if it meant having a sane father who didn’t torment and abuse her mother. Her life probably seemed like a blessing or a fairytale to Lyanna, who had but a small and clouded view of Dany’s life. If the wolf maid knew the half of it she’d run as fast as she could in the other direction.

“Well, I should hope everyone has a high opinion of Rhaegar. It wouldn’t be the smartest decision ever made to speak ill of the future king.” An amused grin spread across her fine features, hopefully negating any possibility that her words could be taken as a threat. “To answer your question, I believe he will be a wonderful husband. He loves me, that much I am sure of. He’s dedicated and devoted to not only being a good King someday but also to being a good husband.” Though Daenerys sometimes thought that his dedication and devotion towards the prophecy far exceeded anything else.

The Princess resumed eating the food piled on her plate, occasionally peeking at her dining companion from under silver lashes. The look on Lyanna’s face made Dany believe that she was more unsure and apprehensive about her looming wedding, a feeling she personally had a great deal of sympathy for. In Daenerys’ case, her future had been set when she survived infancy. Finally a strong child for Rhaegar to eventually marry, there had never been a discussion, nor a choice or another option. But for Lyanna there had been. The North was likely filled with eligiable lords, as was the rest of the Seven Kingdoms if an alliance was needed. It was sad the wold maid’s father had chosen someone with such a disappointing reputation.

“Clarity will come to you eventually, Lady Lyanna. My only hope is that you like what you learn.”

A walk in the water gardens was something that he had enjoyed back in Sunspear.  Not that the gardens here were inferior, but the nostalgia it  brought, made him somewhat sad.  Approaching the perimeter, he saw a lovely woman  pale of hair and skin.  She was unlike those he would encounter in Dorne, let alone some parts of Westeros.  A sort of beauty that came with those of old Valyria and their descendants.  Those of House Targaryen. 

From where he was below, he couldn’t tell if she was forlorn or deep in thought.  Curiosity now took hold of him as he wondered what she was thinking.  Was she thinking of her impending union?  Perhaps her thoughts were lost among the flowers in the garden?  He continued his walk, but now he made sure to walk to the sidesteps to the balcony rather than the path to the gate that led away. 

His walk slowed as he approached the guard.  Not wanting to cause a fuss, the Prince of Dorne stopped respectfully by the knight.  He was already in a precarious position back at home, and had no qualms with the Kingsguard or servants at hand.  Making sure that his positioning let him gaze upon the princess, he started to regret his choice.  She was one woman that he could not have, knowing full well of her engagement to Prince Rhaegar.  Which in turn meant that she was not a risk worth taking.  Right?  Surely harmless flirting couldn’t hurt.

Soft-spoken words left her lips in which he replied with an initial glance at her guard.  Raising an eyebrow at the knight, he turned his attention fully to the lady before him.  “Your Grace,” he replied as he gracefully dipped his head.  As he brought his head back up, he noticed the food at her plate and frowned briefly before smiling when his eyes reached hers.  “Might I join you?”

Daenerys swiftly wiped her hands clean and put an easy smile on her face. If the hectic energy of the past few days had taught the Princess anything, it was how to be a gracious host. It was not as if she was unaccustomed to the population of the Keep swelling exponentially, for people often came to celebrate the nameday of a royal family member. However, Dany was unaccustomed to being in the epicenter of an occasion that there was so much anticipation around. At all times she felt as if people were staring more than usual and while it did not make her uncomfortable exactly, she definitely felt more exposed.

After having a string of people eager to flee the balcony after accidentally interrupting the Princess during her meal, the ease and confidence with which this man sauntered up and asked to dine with her was both amusing and refreshing. “You are certainly welcome to, if you’d like. Perhaps you’ll also tell me your name? I don’t believe we have met before.” Dressed in Martell colours with the darker Dornish skin whilst also feeling comfortable to interrupting a member of the royal family left Daenerys with a keen idea of who this man was. He looked too young to be Doran, which left Oberyn. However, not knowing his name was less embarrassing than using the wrong name so she left him to introduce himself.

“The opposite of a disappointment, your Grace” Catelyn said with a grin.

Princess Daenerys’s smile comforted Catelyn–the queen-to-be seemed about Catelyn’s age and slowly began to look less intimidating. Sure, Cat had been taught to be in awe of anyone with the Targaryen name–even their silver hair looks almost chosen by the gods.

“You are correct, your grace, I have not eaten today, and I would be honored to dine with you.” Cat said graciously, finally settling in and letting her anxiety slip away. She’d been trained to be the polite and well-mannered lady of her house, so by now her grace had become muscle memory. And now that she calmed her nerves, her “muscles” of politeness, respect, and grace kicked in.

“It must be exciting having so many people in the capital, but I hope you are not too exhausted meeting so many new people,” Cat said kindly, sitting at Daenerys’s table.

“That’s good to hear.” What was even better was that Daenerys believed what Lady Catelyn said. Everyone who surrounded the Princess only ever said what they thought she wanted to hear, or gave her what she wanted with no questions. Sincerity was often lost amid duty.

She turned to the servant who was idly waiting for instructions. “Alys, could you pour Lady Catelyn some tea, please? I would appreciate it.” Whilst Alys got to work doing as she was asked, Daenerys smiled apologetically. “I didn’t have wine brought out as I don’t drink it this early in the day, I hope you don’t mind. I can send for some if it’s what you prefer?”

“Not exhausted yet. The influx of people is still somewhat new so my answer to that question may change in a few days!”

☼ Elia couldn’t contain the burst of anxiety that had slowly began to bloom in her chest. Most noble men and women died dreaming of seeing a Targaryen just once in their lives and while the Princess of Dorne wasn’t an ordinary woman, the title of Princess was just that to the rest of the Realm. To the Martells it signified strength; their ancestors had remained unbowed, unbent, and unbroken and had kept their titles as a reward for their own bravery. But the rest of the Realm did not see them that way. To others, they were just another Great House but the lowest due to Dorne’s lack of coin and colouring. Yet here she was, being invited to dine with the Princess whom the rest of the Realm so respected. 

“If it shall please you, Your Grace, I would be most delighted to join you.” She bowed her head once more as a servant rushed to pull back a chair for her across from the Princess. “I am Elia of House Martell. It is an honour to meet you, Your Grace.” She flashed the girl another smile before seating herself.

Rumors were a powerful thing, so powerful in fact that they often coloured Daenerys’ opinion and expectations of people before she had met them. Such was the case with Princess Elia. When the Targaryen girl had her lessons with her Septa, learning the names of the living members of the great houses, Dany had been told that Prince Doran was wise and patient, Prince Oberyn was passionate and unpredictable and that Princess Elia was sweet but sickly. And so, she had expected a woman of obvious frailty and poor health. Except the woman standing before her didn’t look any different than she did, aside from the obvious.

“Oh, marvelous!” Dany smiled whilst resuming her seat. Mother would no doubt be happy that she was acquainting herself with Rhaella’s old friend’s daughter. “As I assumed. Tell me, how was your trip from Dorne?”

Rhaegar took the offered seat, collapsing into it and pulling in a deep breath as his gaze roamed over the gardens. Sometimes, it was astounding how quiet this place could be; how even in the very heart of the capital, everything would align just so and grant them a moment’s respite. It was probably the last quiet moment they’d have for as far as he could see. “Depends on who you’re having them with,” he replied with a laugh, helping himself to a plate. “I can’t promise that I’ll be good company, but I do fear I’ll end up stealing your chicken.”

At Daenerys’ question, Rhaegar could do nothing but worry his lip between his teeth, glancing away from her. He owed her the truth: he’d always known it. Ever since she had been born, he had refused to keep secrets, refused to hide, refused to be anything that would harm her in any way. She was his sister. And as much as he wished to shield Dany and Viserys from all the suffering the king had caused, ignorance was a state of mind he couldn’t abide, and helplessness was a fate he would never allow them to face. “Father,” Rhaegar answered, violet eyes darkening, voice dropping low. “I fear he grows ma - ” The walls have ears in this place, he reminded himself. Be wary of what you speak. “He grows worse every day.”

“I suppose it does depend, but I can say with easy certainty that dining is better with you, Viserys or Mother.” In a candid moment where propriety could be done away with, Daenerys let out a rather unladylike snort of amusement as Rhaegar’s comment. “So, nothing out of the ordinary then? I suppose I’ll forgive you of your thievery if you ask sincerely enough.” Instead, she used a fork to spear a slice of lamb to put on her plate, leaving her brother to eat what he wanted.

Any mention of their father the Mad King was sure to inject a sense of unease into any situation, even during a moment of quite peace in an otherwise hectic time. Daenerys pulled her shawl tighter around her shoulders even though she wasn’t cold. The Princess stared out to the ground beyond the balcony where a light coat of snow dusted everything. Chilly as it might have been, her dragons blood kept her warm. “What are we to do?” Her voice lowered, for what is said next is meant for Rhaegar’s ears alone. “I worry with such a steady influx of visitors to the castle, and the effect they will have. I feel...” Dany sucked in a breath. “I feel as if we stand at a cliff edge and the smallest gust of wind will plunge us all into grief and trouble.”

Catelyn blushed and looked down to the ground; perhaps Daenerys could tell she was anxious.

Catelyn gave a little curtsy and looked back up at Daenerys.

“I’m sorry your Grace, I just arrived at the capital and was not expecting to see anyone just yet, especially not the bride to be,” Cat said shyly as she gathered her traveled-out mess of hair in an attempt to look presentable. She then fixed her posture and straightened out her simple yet elegant dress, mentally thanking her septa for making her change dresses and dab on some scented oil before leaving her quarters. Don’t be nervous, you’ve been meeting noblemen all your life. You are a good lady, and you’re prepared.

“I apologize for having disturbed your meal, please do not let me interrupt any longer,” Catelyn said quickly, realizing she shouldn’t linger on the balcony and upset her host.

“I hope I didn’t turn out to be a disappointment, then.” A sweet and amused smile spread across Daenerys’ lips, hoping that the flustered lady of Riverrun would feel more at ease. With the influx of nobles arriving at the Red Keep to celebrate her marriage to her brother, the Princess was glad to meet at least one person in a calmer setting instead at dinner when she would be expected to mingle with dozens of ladies and lords whilst trying to remember all of their names.

“If you have just arrived then would I be correct in assuming that you haven’t eaten recently? If so you are welcome to eat with me.”

Lyanna smiled and ducked her head politely, and her mother would have been relieved at how well she had been doing thus far. More than her Septa or any other person who had attempted to teach her manners and grace, it had been Lady Lyarra Stark’s example that served as her daughter’s best teacher. Many times upon arriving at King’s Landing did Lyanna call up memories of her mother’s conduct and tried her best to imitate them to perfection. It was not always entirely successful, but it had been sufficient enough that she did not feel completely out of her depth.

“You are too kind to say so, Your Grace,” she replied courteously, folding her hands on her lap. The late winter wind was almost almost gentle today, and Lyanna found herself pleased by the delicate quality of the cold. Yet there was sadness in there, too. A melancholy born of the hollow feeling that something good was about to end. Spring was coming at last and warmth would soon pop the cocoon of ice that seemed to have enclosed all of the known world. For Lyanna who had been a child of winter, it was something different to look forward to but with a trepidation that she somehow could not shake, though that was a thought for later. For now, the Stark girl pondered Daenerys’ question with a furrow of her brows. Would she be excited if it was her? The answer was easy enough, and she attempted to word it as carefully as possible.

“It would be difficult not to be overwhelmed too, I think.” Lyanna had a brief vision of Robert Baratheon and their impending marriage, and she thought she might be sick. It was a feeling of such compelling force that she lurched a little bit where she sat and could only hope that the princess did not notice. With the hope of dispelling all the thought of her betrothed from her mind, the wolf-maid turned to Daenerys with a friendly smile. “Forever is a long time to spend with someone, but I suppose it is exciting too, in it’s way. Though I can only imagine how exhausting all the flurry of activity might be. I don’t know how you do it, Your Grace.”

“I think I would have felt very overwhelmed indeed had it fallen on my shoulders to plan everything.” Daenerys replied honestly. “Fortunately, my mother and Rhaegar deal with most matters. Sometimes I’m asked what kind of flowers I’d prefer or if I would like particular songs to be played at the feast. But other than that I have little responsibility other than to show up to the ceremony.” She also knew that her father had final say-so on everything pertaining to the wedding, but Dany knew better than to speak about Aerys to people. Rumors and opinions were already widespread enough without her comments making anything worse. The less the greater public knew, the better.

“Forever is a long time, but I’ve already spent my whole life with Rhaegar by my side. I don’t think marriage will be much different.” Daenerys spoke with minimal confidence, though she had her doubts. Things would change once she was Rhaegar’s wife, hopefully for the better. She’d be then known at the Crown Princess, a future Queen, a future mother of a King, the mother of the Prince that was Promised. The thought weighed heavily on Dany, as did the expectation her brother had lay on her shoulders for as long as she could remember.

Eager to bring up a topic of conversation that wasn’t about her, the Princess resumed eating and motioned for Lyanna to do the same. “I hear you are to wed the Lord of Storms End. Does the prospect of spending forever with him excite you?” She could not help the skepticism that crept into her voice. Daenerys was not deaf to rumors and knew what Robert Baratheon was supposedly like. “Have you spent much time with him yet?”

Lysa lifted up her dress to make room for her feet to walk over to the edge of the balcony. She let out a content sigh at the sight of the buildings below them. Perhaps the capital wasn’t that bad after all. Her thoughts and admiration of the buzzing streets below were interrupted however, as the Princess asked her a question. One she definitely knew the answer to, yet, she still took a few seconds to turn around and answer. “Lady Lysa Tully, your grace. Daughter of H-, Lady in the Riverlands.” she brushed over her hesitation like it was nothing. “You’re.. Princess Daenerys, are you not? I recognize you from the wall paintings. You are very beautiful.”

“I am, yes.” Daenerys smiled warmly, briefly amused by meeting someone who wasn’t immediately sure who she was. She did not blush very often, but it threatened to creep across her cheeks anyway. The Princess was not unaccustomed to compliments regarding her beauty, it was just they were usually from men and accompanied by a thinly veiled hungry gaze. Lysa spoke as if she were merely stating a fact and not paying a compliment. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Lysa. How are you finding Kings Landing so far? Have you been here long?”

The wolf-maid smiled and tilted her head to the side, a gesture that risked coming across as curiously bestial, had it not been softened by the girl’s apparent beauty and the musical quality of her voice. “That’s good to know, Your Grace. I should’ve known better than to drop by at such a time, but I’m afraid it has completely escaped my notice.” There was something about the princess that endeared her to Lyanna automatically, despite having just met her. Her looks were undeniably Targaryen – silver hair, violet eyes – arresting and intimidating all at once, but Daenerys had an unassuming air to her person. Tentative, almost shy, an ironic contrast to the power of her position, but one that was welcome in the Stark girl’s eyes all the same.

She moved steadily towards the princess, her skirt billowing around her in the late winter breeze, and realized with no small amount of dismay that she missed the introductory part of this interaction completely. “Oh, but I’m getting quite ahead of myself, aren’t I? Please forgive me, Your Grace. My name is Lyanna Stark, from Winterfell. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Another curtsey followed, with a faint blush of embarrassment giving her otherwise pale face the appearance of colour. Thoughts of what her lady mother would think with regards to the current conversation fleeted through her mind, and she tried her best to get rid of them completely for fear of turning into a darker, more noticeable shade of red. “I would be most pleased to join you, thank you.” Lyanna moved towards where Daenerys sat, her maid pulling out the chair on which she positioned herself, and the wolf-maid offer up her words of gratitude. “You must be very excited,” she told the princess, smiling now. “What with your wedding drawing near and all. Everyone at court wishes you happiness, Your Grace.”

Recognition flickered in the Princess’ purple eyes as Lyanna introduced herself. Of course, Daenerys thought to herself. In hindsight, she probably should have had some inkling. After all her Septa had spent considerable time teaching her about the noble houses of the realm and the identifying characteristics of the families. Like the Martells and their darker skin and brown eyes. Like the Lannisters and their golden curls and emerald hues. Like the Baratheons and their black hair and bright blue eyes. Like the Starks and their dark hair and grey eyes. “Lady Lyanna! The pleasure is all mine, I assure you.”

Daenerys had heard that northerners were a wild lot, and she hadn’t had much opportunity to disprove that notion. People from that far away rarely came to the capital unless it was about something very important, like perhaps the wedding of a Prince and a Princess. Needless to say, Lyanna was not what Dany had previously thought the quintessential northerner to be like. The silver-haired maiden silently reminded herself to not make assumptions so quickly, for people were rarely what they seemed at first glance.

“I am excited, yes.” Excited though nervous, and slightly apprehensive. More and more Daenerys had been thinking about the likelihood Rhaegar would eventually turn into their father, and thus condemn her to a fate similar to her mother’s. The thought made her blood run cold but for the sake of appearances and making a good impression, she kept a polite smile plastered on her face to mask her inner monologue. “With people coming from far and wide just to attend the ceremony, and the decorations, and the dress, it’s difficult not to be excited, don’t you think?”
