𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒂𝒚. how do they deal with grief & loss?

in truth , rhaena does not naturally deal with grief well; she is to her core a deeply emotional and empathetic person. the death of laena when rhaena was but four namedays old rocked the young targaryen severely , & from that moment she became incredibly emotionally attached to those closest to her. this , unfortunately , would not be of use when those people died – the death of her cousin & betrothed , luke , was another moment where rhaena felt utterly lost in the world ( excluding her sister , he was probably her closest friend in their youth & represented the future that she was being raised to fulfill ). having this future , & her beloved companion , brutally torn away from her sends rhaena reeling. HOWEVER. however. rhaena also learns from a young age that to show such weakness as grief is not something her father wished to observe. so the girl learns to internalise her grief , to shut it away from a public display of mourning. she must remain the perfect princess , a paragon of targaryen steel and strength. as such , her grief is rarely visible to the untrained eye. a soft , demure smile must remain painted upon her face in public: duty to the throne above all else. this unfortunately often makes rhaena physically unwell – by not allowing herself to grieve as her body & soul wish to do so , the sensations must find their own way of expressing themselves. rhaena suffers with debilitating headaches as a result of her grief not being able to release itself as it should.

something something the concept of rhaena being some form of hostage for the greens during the dance. throwing a spotlight on: how much would daemon prioritise his own daughter over his obsession attachment to rhaenyra? others realising in real time just how unimportant rhaena is seen to “the cause” amongst those who supported rhaenyra. rhaena , obviously , knows how little her father thinks of her , in comparison to her other siblings. still – she is the daughter of the rogue prince: would he go so off course to defend her / retrieve her / bargain for her? unsure. a slight against rhaena would be seen as a slight against daemon , & could his pride handle such an insult?

this might be contrary to popular belief but i truly think rhaena’s first marriage was the politically led one whilst the second was the marriage she chose for herself: one rooted more in affection , & perhaps even love.

her marriage to corwyn came after she had been named heir to the iron throne following aegon iii’s reign. at that point , the decision regarding her future husband was one of political importance , & rhaena willingly allowed the choice to fall to the king’s regents. her only request was that the man chosen for her possess the qualities she valued most:

“ so long as [my husband] is kind & gentle & noble , i know that i shall love him. ”

it was the regents that asked for her personal preference & , whilst corwyn was at first not the most ideal candidate , they realised his more ideal qualities outweighed the bad & arranged their marriage. it was one that served a political purpose, but one rhaena entered into with the hope that affection could grow from mutual respect & kindness.

far less is known about her second marriage to garmund hightower , beyond the fact that they had six daughters together. naturally , the relationship between house targaryen & house hightower would have been severely strained following the war , but that does not necessarily mean reconciliation was impossible - we know that alyn velaryon was able to form a friendship with lyonel hightower & his wife , samantha , in the years following the conflict. i see little reason why rhaena could not have developed a similar relationship with oldtown’s ruling family, especially as the wounds of war began to heal & political necessity gave way to personal relationships.

this would allow her introduction to ser garmund & potentially both falling love. no longer the heir to the throne , nor heir to driftmark , & as a second daughter already widowed. . . i do not see the regency nor house corbray nor house velaryon taking issue with such a love-marriage.

in that sense , garmund may have been the first marriage rhaena truly chose for herself.

there's simply so much i want to address for rhaena. . . various dynamics with those closest to her. her time as heir to the iron throne whilst her brother aegon was king. her life post-dance in oldtown with garmund & their daughters. the concept of rhaena living long enough to witness the shit show that was king aegon IV i mean she'd be 80 years old at the first blackfyre rebellion which is so out of the question but its still funny to consider.
