this   might   be   contrary   to   popular   belief   but   i   truly   think   rhaena’s   first   marriage   was   the   politically   led   one   whilst   the   second   was   the   marriage   she   chose   for   herself:   one   rooted   more   in   affection ,    &    perhaps   even   love.

her   marriage   to   corwyn   came   after   she   had   been   named   heir   to   the   iron   throne   following   aegon   iii’s   reign.   at   that   point ,   the   decision   regarding   her   future   husband   was   one   of   political   importance ,    &    rhaena   willingly   allowed   the   choice   to   fall   to   the   king’s   regents.   her   only   request   was   that   the   man   chosen   for   her   possess   the   qualities   she   valued   most:

“ so   long   as   [my   husband]   is   kind    &    gentle    &    noble ,   i   know   that   i   shall   love   him. ”

it   was   the   regents   that   asked   for   her   personal   preference   & ,   whilst   corwyn   was   at   first   not   the   most   ideal   candidate ,   they   realised   his   more   ideal   qualities   outweighed   the   bad   &    arranged   their   marriage.   it   was   one   that   served   a   political   purpose,   but   one   rhaena   entered   into   with   the   hope   that   affection   could   grow   from   mutual   respect    &    kindness.

far   less   is   known   about   her   second   marriage   to   garmund   hightower ,   beyond   the   fact   that   they   had   six   daughters   together.   naturally ,   the   relationship   between   house   targaryen    &    house   hightower   would   have   been   severely   strained   following   the   war ,   but   that   does   not   necessarily   mean   reconciliation   was   impossible   -   we   know   that   alyn   velaryon   was   able   to   form   a   friendship   with   lyonel   hightower    &    his   wife ,   samantha ,   in   the   years   following   the   conflict.   i   see   little   reason   why   rhaena   could   not   have   developed   a   similar   relationship   with   oldtown’s   ruling   family,   especially   as   the   wounds   of   war   began   to   heal    &    political   necessity   gave   way   to   personal   relationships.

this   would   allow   her   introduction   to   ser   garmund    &    potentially   both   falling   love.   no   longer   the   heir   to   the   throne ,   nor   heir   to   driftmark ,    &    as   a   second   daughter   already   widowed. . .   i   do   not   see   the   regency   nor   house   corbray   nor   house   velaryon   taking   issue   with   such   a   love-marriage.

in   that   sense ,   garmund   may   have   been   the   first   marriage   rhaena   truly   chose   for   herself.
