sunken dream || Brooke & Open
Brooke carefully shut the door to her son’s bedroom. He was finally asleep, despite the boils all over his body. It had been horrible to watch them spread and Brooke felt helpless in the face of whatever disease was taking hold of him. She had been watching the news and already knew they didn’t have a cure for it yet, and also that she was likely to start developing them very soon due to her contact with Matthew. Because of that she didn’t necessarily want to get too close to anyone else right now, but she was already a little desperate to talk to someone else about what was going on. She stepped out onto her small porch and sat down on the steps, hoping someone would walk by and be willing to give her a few moments of their time just to talk.
Darius would be lying if he said that he was beginning to regret his moving to Tilden. It wasn’t what he’d expected- or dreamed of. And of course the whole world had gone to hell since he’d taken the new job and moved away from his hometown.
He was out for a walk, hoping to clear his head. He noticed a woman sitting at the foot of some stairs, hesitating a moment before saying anything. “You okay?” He asked, looking down at her.
“That stuff wasn’t really real, though.”
“Could have been inspired by true events though.”
“Well it didn’t rain blood before, did it?”
“I’m pretty sure that it did... according to the Bible.”
“So I’m pretty sure it’s the end of the world.”
“People have thought that before though.”
“I appreciate it, but I think I have to do this on my own. I’ll find a job, I don’t want to burden your couch for weeks or months.”
“You do whatever you need to do. I just don’t like the idea of anyone being stuck outside in this shit.”
“Thank you, thank you so much. I have a few bucks, I can give you some of it to try to pay you for the night. I don’t even need a bed, I just need a roof over my head. I’ll take a shed or garage, even.”
“And by few bucks I mean few. I spent most of what I had at the food mart.”
“I’m not worried about the money but I appreciate you offering. You’re welcome to crash on the couch until you can find something else.”
“Please tell me I can just spend the night. One night. I sleep outside — I can’t handle the blood another night. I’ll be out of your hair after that, I promise.”
“You’re welcome to stay at my place. I hate to think of anyone being stuck outside like this.”
“Damn skippy I did! But then again, I’m biased. Born and raised here. How about you? What’s your story?”
“I moved here for work- and a change of scenery I guess.”
“I think we were all scarred by the Wizard of Oz as children.”
“I take it you avoid monkeys and poppys too.”
“What can I say? I have never been one who likes rain.”
“You could move to the desert.”
“It is just cold.”
“It is crazy cold. I can’t wait for spring to get going.”
“Hey now, that does not apply to everyone. I look hella cute in both rain boots and a bathing suit. Water is rad.”
“I guess you picked a good place to live then.”
“Why would someone be watching the roads?”
“That’s something to look forward to, then.”
“We’re talking hypothetical here, right? Use your imagination.”
“Uh, no. I mean, I have a car, which is more convenient for escaping.”
“I’m a fisherman. Born on a ship, probably die on one if I get my way. The sea’s home.”
“Unless someone is watching the roads.”
“Yeah, I saw that movie. You turn out to be a demigod, I think.”
“You never know.”
“Better safe than sorry I guess. Still, the rain isn’t so bad.”
“Not me. I’m not comfortable without a body of water nearby.”
“Like an emergency escape route?”
