Welcome to Darkest Before Dawn, a Clangen comic by @needlepine!

How it works:

Like the game Werewolf, a cat in one of the clans is actually a were-beast in disguise! It is up to the chosen ten cats to discover the identity of the beast (based on the random relationship values/events in Clangen).

Unlike Werewolf, the chosen cats must also figure out a way to stop or kill the beast before it kills them.

This comic also incorporates the random events present in Clangen. The cats can still be killed by injury, illness, and random chance, along with the monthly attacks by the beast.

One moon in-game represents one week in the comic. Every fourth comic is the new moon, which is when the beast appears and has a chance to kill.

I won’t be confirming or denying any plot-related questions about the beast, but feel free to send in mechanical questions and theories!

This probably goes without saying, but this comic will contain blood and animal death. Please steer clear if this will bother you.

had enough energy while recovering for some quick headshots, so i did a spin on that 'give me 6 clangens' thing & just drew some characters from different comics i've read & been inspired by c:

WILDFIRECRY (@loudclan-clangen) - im still not recovered from You Know What but his revenge bit was both badass and cathartic. the artists who can commit to character deaths are always really impressive to me!

HERONSTAR (@juniper-clan) - i've been dying to draw heron since she got her adult glo-up, i think her design is really fun. simple & strikingly effective! her very specific fur design was a nice challenge (i hope i got it right).

SNAILSTEP (@snailstep-and-her-clan) - i couldn't not draw the titular girl, especially when she inspired me to start this blog!! i really love her wild mane of fur so much & it was delightful to draw.

RUNNINGSTAR (@darkest-before-dawnclan) - i had a hard time picking just one character since they're all so interesting & well designed... but i ended up going with an as-yet only briefly shown character bc i really vibed with him!

VANILLABRIGHT (@moons-of-dewclan) - i don't know if i could ever do these characters justice, but dewclan is a longtime fav, and i love seeing other adult warriors fans, haha. i know the comic is kind of on hiatus, but i look forward to seeing whatever comes next!

CLOWNWISH (@circus-clangen) - absolutely a must-draw here, the setup for this clan is so unique & fun & the puzzles are just so creative! i haven't solved a single one bc i suck at puzzles, but still a huge inspo for me.

i'm always excited to see what other clangens pop up in the tags, i know most of these are more popular ones, but i'm hoping i get to draw fanart of some off the lesser-known ones soon!

In poppy and fossils toy house pages, it says they have a sister named Amberpaw? What's her story, and why isn't she also on the journey?

We'll meet her in the comic! I wanna get rolling on DBD again, so hopefully you'll get to know her soon

I mentioned on TH, so I'll go ahead and say here too: Amberpaw was injured just before cats were chosen for the quest, so she couldn't come along. All three siblings are upset that she had to be left behind

So long as it's not like erasing any canon queer identities shown in the comics, idm! I draw my cats fairly androgynous, so I def don't mind ppl interpreting them as they see fit. You can do whatever you want forever :)

(I'm mostly thinking of canon trans characters re: erasure. The trans characters we've met so far are Runningstar, a trans tom, and Halfstar, an intersex molly. I'd be uncomfortable with their and any future trans characters' identities being changed, but it's totally fine to hc other characters as trans!)

hey so i read every update n ask answer so far, loved it all, and still only just now processed that fossilpaw is a dude. so ashamed. i looked at him and went "hmm,., she/they. yes." completely ignoring the fact that it says his pronouns RIGHT THERE. i am a fool. i am as dumb as a fish

Dear Friends,

I write to you with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart. After 188 days of displacement, constant fear, and struggling to survive, we managed to escape with our lives and reach Egypt. But the pain didn’t stop there. Just yesterday, we lost my children's grandfather 💔, not due to direct war, but because of malnutrition and the lack of basic life necessities. We couldn’t save him, just as we couldn’t save our home or our dreams.

The rest of my family is still trapped in the war, suffering the same harsh conditions that led to the passing of my children's grandfather. We are here trying to build a new life, but we have lost everything. We lost our home, and my children were deprived of their schools and universities. Even my eldest son, who worked so hard to build his future, lost his job and saw his dreams shattered.😔

We are now in desperate need of your help. We seek to secure a safe home that will provide us and our children with basic needs. Life in Egypt is extremely difficult, and prices are soaring beyond our reach. All we ask for is a chance to rebuild our lives and secure a better future for our children.🙏🏼
