Last night I finally watched Cult of Chucky after spending the night before reacquainting myself with its older sibling Curse of Chucky. Chucky is the one time tested horror icon still standing and both of these movies prove ole Charles Lee Ray is aging like a fine wine. Let’s talk about ‘em.
Curse of Chucky is great, eschewing the comedy elements introduced in Bride of Chucky in favor of making the character scary again. And it works! It’s set in a big, creepy suburban manor that’s shot and lit to eerie perfection, creating a perfect backdrop for Chucky’s reemergence and subsequent picking off of its inhabitants. The doll in the movie suffers from a bit of Halloween H20 Syndrome in that he looks awesome in some shots and silly in others, but if you can look past that it’s an awesome little horror film.
There’s nothing little about Cult of Chucky, though. Well, aside from its antagonist, I suppose. 😛 This movie is so fucking creative, exponentially expanding the lore of the franchise and perfectly tying together all of its various entries, maintaining the tonal shift back to horror from Curse but balancing it perfectly with the dark sense of humor people loved in Bride. The performances from Brad and Fiona Dourif and the returning Jennifer Tilly (who seems to have discovered the fountain of youth?) and Alex Vincent are incredible! Cult of Chucky is absolutely my new favorite Child’s Play sequel and if you’re into Chucky you NEED to watch it. But watch Curse first!
