BIOGRAPHY
!!TRIGGER WARNING!! - mental health issues, self-harm
-Caroline had always thrived to be the perfect lady. She’d studied hard, took care of her younger siblings, made sure to learn every trick from her mother in entertaining and being the lady of the house and yet... there was always something that pulled her back.
-Her little episodes didn’t help her in her place in society either. Her family kept it well hidden most of the time, but they slipped out every once in a while. Screaming too loud in the carriage moving across the street, dresses ripped in the most questionable places, the doctor seen at the Darling house most times than ever. And of course, the fact that despite having suitors piling up by the doorbell, Caroline still hasn’t managed to marry anyone yet, even though her younger sister is already living apart from the family in her match-made-in-heaven marriage.
-Members of the Manhattan society found it questionable, when the Darling family announced that the lovely, fragile little Caroline would be going on a French tour for the unforseeable future. Most curious indeed.
-(trigger warning: self-harm) It wasn’t so curious for Caroline and her family, of course. After bloodying up her sheets with the cuts she inflicted upon herself, Caroline was sent to a French institute of sorts, which was most known for it’s discretion.
-And now, after almost a year-long hiatus, Caroline has stepped foot again into Manhattan, raising questions about her left and right. As her family is from new money, it is clear that she had made an easy target out of herself, and anyone around her. Vicious rumors have started going on about her about an unwanted pregnancy out of wedlock, or the romance of her and some penniless french farmboy. But none come even close to the truth.
-To be completely honest, Caroline is far from being cured. Nor does she think whatever illness she has can be cured. But in order to take the weight off of her family’s shoulders, she is determined to find herself a suitable match by the end of the year and clear the Darling name of any and all dirt, even though she is still a ticking time bomb ready to explode.
“Do you think they’ve got any cake left?” The ball was well under way by the time Caroline had finally found a room secluded enough to take a break. Dancing and drinking and talking to people was fun, until it was overwhelming. And it could get quite a lot very quickly, especially for her. The presence of another was only not unwelcome because it was someone she was comfortable with. Caroline sighed, her eyes moving from Celeste’s frame to the painting she was sitting in front of. “Nevermind, even if there was more cake, I’m much too tired to get some for myself. I do not think mother would be inclined to leave just yet...”
“--But that is also why our dear mother doesn’t allow us to have any pets, but to be completely honest with you, I quite reckon it is because she is frightened of anything furry.” How Caroline’s conversation with the poor Livingston boy who asked her for a dance turned into that topic was purely the boy’s fault. He was utterly boring (and perhaps shy to really show his personality), and thus, Caroline’s quite beastly side was released. Thankfully enough, the dance moved on to the part where the ladies would dance together for a while, and as soo as her eyes landed on the familiar face of Veronica Kennedy, she skipped and glided towards her as if she was running to her only refuge in a battle. “If I have to keep talking about my family to Thomas Livingston any longer, I fear I might scream at him! If I feign I’m light-headed, would you escort me some place he wouldn’t find me for the rest of the night?”
among the opulence of the VANDERBILT BALL, at the BEGINNING of the night. ╱ open.
“i for one adore flowers,” she orates from atop the white cloud of her dress, accepting a coupe of champagne from an extended platter. “but i do believe that the vanderbilts have brought in so many strains of various flora tonight that they may force some of us to retire early out of a sudden oncoming of hay fever.” serafine takes a modest sip, eyes turning from appraisal of the room to assessment of the individual across from her.
“have you an opinion on the decor?”
.
And there it was. Caroline was almost starting to question where the sudden sweetness came from, but Serafine soon assured her that it was anything but. The last comment brought a mischievous glint into Carrie’s eyes while she kept her smile to the usual soft one. “Whatever could you mean? I happen to enjoy feeling like I’m a jungle wonderland.” There was half a truth to what she was saying, but Caroline liked sounding as unpredictable and, as her aunt or mother would say, unique, as possible. Whether she was mocking, or simply being genuinely naive, was a mystery to even herself. “However, I do wonder what Mrs. Vanderbilt’s garden must look like...”
“oh, do wait -” the sweet voice lilts forward the way a hand reaches forth to grasp a shoulder, delicate and cupped at the palm, waiting to hold you within. simonetta strides quickly from the cobblestone walkway to the curb, a sudden joyfulness turning her movement buoyant.
“i knew a horse that looked just like this. grey speckles, down to the white over this eye. it’s remarkable.” one lambskin glove traces gently over the steed’s calm face, “how darling… just the same. perfetta.”
simonetta leans to the side, for the first time looking beyond the elegant neck of the horse to the rider who sits in the carriage behind it.
“does the prussian emperor know you’re in possession of his favourite cousin’s beloved mount? it’s a great prize to have stolen.”
.
There was quite a numb, unreadable expression on Caroline’s face as she sat back int he carriage, fingers picking at the tip of her glove, trying to swallow the urge to act out. She had been under a tight schedule ever since she’d come back from France. Not a minute spent alone by herself. Nor a plan made out of her own will. Going back home int he middle of the day seemed to be the worst thing that could ever happen to her so, clearly, as the carriage was stopped, and she heard a somewhat familiar voice, Caroline peeked out from behind the carriage door. She remained silent for a while, listening to the other woman speak, then with her eyes lighting up, along with a smile appearing on her face, she opened her mouth as well. “And stolen I indeed have, Mrs. Lamb! And I must insist that you please keep quiet about it, especially around His Majesty’s cousin, should you be in their presence in the foreseeable future.” She ignored her companion’s advice about stopping with the jokes, and soon enough she was getting out of the carriage. “Would you like to discuss the circumstances of this… prussian horse hostage situation while we promenade?”
sophia was a lover of central park , the sights , the sounds , the smells and the people . it somehow transported sophia back to her muddy days in france , how she longed to go back if for anything to see how the french branch of their brand was doing , and perhaps see her father who was now traveling the world to set up new shops across europe . “ i do hope the rain holds off , ” she looked up to the sky , and within a second the skies opened . “ or not ! ” joy was on her face as she took off her shoes to be able to run . “ do you know of a dry place ? ” it was above the whisper of a lady but with the sound of roaring rain she needed to yell .
The gentle breeze lightly caressing Caroline’s rosy cheeks as she enjoyed the outside air of the park very quickly turned into a much fiercer wind, and along with it came the dark grey clouds soon enough. Caroline perked up to the hastened footsteps around her, and it seemed as if she was just snapped back up from a daydream. At least that was what could be read from her confused expression. Her eyes fell on a familiar face, then the body that accompanied it, and Caroline stifled a laughter into a simple smile as she watched the other lady take her shoes off. “Goodness. A dry place, in the middle of central park?” She stood up, not minding the raindrops on her dress one bit. “Under a tree, perhaps? Or, my carriage is waiting by the edge of the park. Although I seem to have lost my lady’s companion. We would have to wait for her in the carriage.” She took a pause before speaking again. “If it isn’t entirely indecent, you may use my parasol in the meanwhile. I would not mind!”
