sdfddfssdf thank you anon!! :’D i do have some tips on this post here and i can only give a list of my personal do and don’ts, so don’t take this as an objective ‘you have to do this’ thing. it’s just what i do in my own writing!

DO:

be conscious of pacing. slow, romantic sex deserves longer paragraphs, longer sentences, more semi-colons and commas to keep it flowering. quick, dirty sex means more indenting, more periods, and can be a bit choppier.

involve the character’s emotions and their personal dialogue. if it’s one person’s POV, show the reader what they think their partner is feeling/thinking. if it’s a flexible POV, alternate between both.

take notes! don’t just read smut and move on, analyze as you’re reading and take note of what you like and what you want to incorporate in your own writing.

DON’T:

don’t overload with description and get ultra specific. you don’t need to describe the dildo/dick in full detail. let the reader fill in their own blanks and assume that they know what most of this stuff looks like.

don’t use clinical words like ‘penis’, ‘perineum’, ‘anus’, and ‘buttox’. there are much better slang terms like ‘dick’ and ‘cock’ and ‘ass’, as well as more elegant terms like ‘entrance’, ‘length’, ‘rear’, etc.

avoid repeating the same words a lot, but don’t expect to never repeat anything ever. try to space out the usage so it’s not three ‘he moaned’ in the same sentence.

know when to use simple words for actions (i.e. ‘thrusting’ vs. ‘bucking their hips’) and when to be more descriptive.    

if you don’t want to write something, don’t. decide what parts you want to focus on and let the reader fill in the rest.

What do you know about making it easier to write realistic (and still steamy) sex scenes? I'm an adult (27) and I'm wanting to include them in my writing, and I can picture the scenes in my head, but I find it difficult to describe everything in a way that doesn't feel clunky, overly descriptive, or prudish. Sorry if this is considered an inappropriate question - this is the biggest reason I end up developing writer's block.

I do not consider this an inappropriate question. The only questions I find inappropriate are questions that are offensive because they are; Racist, Sexist, Homophobic(Discriminatory against any type of LGBTQA+),Trans-phobic(discriminatory against any kind of gender or gender identity) or Albeist(anything discriminatory against any physical or mental disabilities). 

I have 0 tolerance for this kind of stuff. If I see it in my inbox, I will either delete it immediately, or In the case of a milder form, I will answer to address it and let you know why I will not be answering the question. 

Any sexual themed asks is simply to my judgment whether or not I feel comfortable answering it. 

I have no problem answering this question, because I see nothing wrong with it. There is nothing wrong or offensive about the lone aspect of sex. I’ll still be tagging this as nsfw, because I am aware many people are uncomfortable with the topic and would prefer not to read or see anything involving it, at one point, I shared this preference, so it’s only right I regard and respect those who still do. 

This also a common problem among the writing community, myself, and many other people struggle with this same thing, so I am sure many of my followers will also find this conversation useful. 

Also, just to assure you, I am an adult as well, although I am a tad younger then you. I promise, you are not receiving sexual advice and writing tips from an inexperienced and naive teenager.  I know if it was me on the other side of the screen, that’s something that would have me a bit worried and maybe a bit uncomfortable as well. 

Anyway, longest intro to an answer ever is over now. Let’s get down to it. 

Your sex scenes might turn out a bit clunky and awkward from time to time, simply because that’s how sex is. Sex is not always this suave, graceful thing. If you write a sex scene and it feels ‘clunky’, don’t worry so much about it. It’s natural, and that can be easily fixed with some editing. 

If it feels prudish, it’s most likely because you’re not comfortable with the scene, and it’s reflecting in your writing. The first time I ever tried to write a sex scene, it was extremely uncomfortable for me, and it showed. The awkwardness of it was as clear in my words as it was on my face. Your emotions show in your writing, that’s what writing is, for f*cks sake. Writing is you, it is your emotions. If you don’t feel comfortable with writing sex scenes, or with expressing sexuality in general, it’s gonna show as clear as day on the paper. I’ll tell you right now; There’s nothing wrong with sex. There’s nothing wrong with writing sex scenes, or wanting to write them. There’s nothing wrong with being sexual. Whether you have a high sex drive or a non existent sex drive, there’s nothing wrong with it. If you’re writing about sex, then you need to get comfortable with it. Honestly, it wouldn’t hurt to practice. Might sound or feel weird to constantly write different sex scenes, but it’ll help you get used to it.  

Finally; over description. Best advice? Emotions are your new best friend. After all, Sex is(or at least should be) about making each other feel good. So when you’re writing, stop taking so much time figuring out all the mechanics. You don’t do that while you’re having sex, now do you? You don’t perfectly outline a six point plan on exactly how to do everything. You go with the flow, follow what feels good for you and your partner(s). Let your characters feel good. We don’t need to know about every time they move their arm, or every single time they thrust. Focus on their emotions, and how they’re feeling. Sure give us an action, one or two simple ones at a time, and then follow up with how that makes them feel. I use the same advice for writing kisses and fight scenes, ironically. The mechanics of the scene arent necessarily as important as the emotions of it. Try this: Write a short sex scene. Don’t let it be any longer then a paragraph. Just mechanics. Where they move, when, what they do, etc. Just the mechanics, nothing more. Then go back and add the emotions. What each move makes them feel. Watch how the scene expands and blossoms. A sex scene with no emotions or feelings explored is gonna be very, very boring. The emotions are where it gets interesting and steamy. Besides, in the moment, you can’t even tell what someone is doing have the time. In reality, no one is really focused on every last detail of what they’re partners doing to them, if it’s good, they’re too swept away by the feeling.

Oooooooh anon. Alright, alright. Smut is my forte. This blog got ‘popular’ for it. And it’s probably going to be my legacy. My MA tutor told me that I’m one of the few people’s erotica he’s actually liked. <3

So - enough posturing and here we go. This will obvs get NSFW.

Writing Smut - Fen’s 101

First thing I tackle(snrk), is -

Length (eyeyey)

Is this going to start in the middle of the build up, ie, are they already kissing and naked? Or is there going to be build up?

Going straight into the thick of things works for certain smut pieces, and it can change the pace of a piece of writing/mix things up a little if you start the chapter or piece with them already there. 

Obviously for these types, you don’t have to worry about build up; about both partners essentially turning on - and in the case of m/m penetrative sex or m/f anal sex, you gotta put prep in there before A goes into B (but I’ll get there).

For build up pieces - I’ll reference my last fics ‘Voice’ and ‘Language’ - the build up between Illidan and Maiev was their back and forth in their birth tongue. It stirred up memories, and was something that was just theirs. That, was their foreplay. Foreplay isn’t just touching or oral. It can be the thrill of battle, the whisper of a forgotten promise; the way they made you laugh - it’s unique to each character. And I think the important think with writing smut - for me anyway - is to approach it as not just a piece of porn with characters filling in the blanks. But create it from your characters - let them tell you what they want and how they want it.

Which takes me to the most important thing for me when I write smut -

Emotion

If it’s their first time or last; if it’s a 25 year married couple, midweek while the kids sleep; if it’s a one night stand with a faceless, nameless you’ll never see again; if it’s at last - there will always be some emotion. Something - whether it be bad, or good, will be there. 

I try and portray this in several different ways. 

For an intense, passionate tryst that has happened without warning, with very little build up - I try and reflect that in the urgency of my writing too. Shorter sentences. Repetition to mirror the wild, frantic, desperation of the moment. Also, for times like this I tend to focus on very physical things; the way their hands move, scratching against skin; how close they are; the heat of breath; the fact that for them, nothing else exists outside that moment and their bodies. Word choices can also be important for writing smut. I tend to use more ‘harsh’ words like ‘cock’ and ‘thrust’ for moments like this.

For times when the smut is more sensual - where there is so much love - I try and write (in short) as if the world is reflected on their partner; and their partner on the world. Now, this is a very generalised feeling for writing sensual/loving smut - and as I said before - always, always take into consideration the character’s personality and their relationship with their partner(s) first and foremost. Examples though for this type of smut. Partner A notices hows the moonlight falls over their shoulder, their back, making the thin stretchmarks shimmer like glass; as she breathed, it was as if the earth breathed with her, the leaves an echo of her voice, the faint whisper of a moan falling, falling away with the wind.I try and use a much more languid flow of sentences and softer words for this type of smut. Long sentences, lots of commas (hi everyone who has ever edited my work ever haha) and what one of my tutors called ‘expensive words’. Words that you can only use once in a piece; powerful words - often treading the lines of dreaded purple prose - but when used right, can really make a paragraph, a line, or even the piece itself. 

Other important things for emotion: taste and smell. What does their partner taste like to them? What do they smell? Each other? Their hair? The bed of flowers they’ve just rolled onto, the puff of pollen, coiling in the air?

What do they hear? Sound can be a powerful turn on for people - especially the sounds of their partner; moans, whispers, words, names. 

Fen! There’s more than just heat of the moment and sensual smut! You’re damn right there is and here’s a few more pointers for things I do for other types of smut. But I won’t go into too much depth, or I’ll be here forever.

Fun

Emphasis on body; playful touches and laughter. Dialogue! Don’t be afraid to put dialogue into your smut. People talk during sex - all types of sex. 

Things can go wrong (and this isn’t restricted to fun sex). And how they react to it is purely down to the character’s personality and/or the relationship. But remember, happy couples can laugh together at this stuff.

Group Sex

Pronouns! This can get confusing if it’s say three girls together. The beauty with fanfic/fantasy stuff etc is we can say “The Demon Hunter” or “The mage” etc. and get away with it. In other fiction, a mixture of pronouns and their actual names. Try and stay away from “The tall one” “The red headed one” etc as much as possible. 

Afterwards

Are they going to part straight away? Are they going to cuddle? Is the realisation of what they have just done, going to hit them? 

Sex is a huge build up of emotion and a moment - and the release after can sometimes be a huge crash back to reality, that can hurt. Or that can be great. You don’t have to draw it out to the post-sex moment. In some of my fics I have ended with them falling onto the table/bed/floor, and then a single line of thought from one of the characters - or a single line of action, that can speak just enough. Don’t be afraid to let your reader figure it out themselves.

Orgasms!

Vagina havers can have multiple orgasms (and often not from penetration, but from clitoral stimulation). Sometimes the ones after the first are better; sometimes they’re not. Penis havers technically can, but not to the degree that the clit can give. And don’t forget prostate stimulation. 

Also - the orgasm for people can affect them as individually as they are. Tremors, twitches, going perfectly still, silent, loud, laughing - know what your character does. And have some fun. Try and show their orgasm through their body; or the way things start to sound - different, muffled; their breathing is hitched, ragged; the world blurs, it fades away until all she can see, is her.

Other useful things of note when writing any smut

For m/m penetrative or any anal sex - proper lubrication. And also preparation. Especially if this is someone’s first time that way. They will need prepped with fingers/toy, lube and time. “It’s not sexy!” I hear you cry. Neither is a torn asshole which is what we all thinking.

Location. Is it a bed? A kitchen counter? A grimy toilet cubicle? Khadgar’s office? Make things show their union. A map on the table, tearing beneath them each time he thrusts; a book falling off a shelf when he collides against the wall; windows, fogging; the noise outside so loud, they can be loud. 

Do your research when writing kinky stuff. I mean - it all depends on what Mood™ you’re going for, but for BDSM, aftercare is pretty damn important. Consent and understanding is essential.

Some of the best piece of advice I ever got for writing dialogue and writing in general is - make it realistic, not real. 

And above all, have fun.
