Finding the Right Words with @taylorswift

Like her music, Taylor Swift’s photography is filled with delicate and intimate moments from the singer-songwriter’s personal life. Whether she’s documenting a new musical album, writing a letter to a fan, capturing silly videos with friends or sharing hand-written lyrics on Instagram, vivid storytelling is always at the heart of Taylor’s work.

“When I was 12, I fell in love with writing music and lyrics. I loved the rush I got when I found the perfect rhyme,” Taylor says. “But mostly I fell in love with how songwriting helped me make sense of how I felt, and then it celebrated how I felt.”

Carving Pumpkin Sculptures with @villafanestudios

“I love carving faces into pumpkins more than anything else,” says Ray Villafane, a commercial sculptor and founder of Villafane Studios (@villafanestudios) in Arizona, USA.

Ray began carving three-dimensional faces into pumpkins as an annual fall tradition during his years teaching kindergarten-12th grade art class. He then moved on to professional sculpting for major comic and animation companies, but his strong affinity for the pumpkin art eventually lead him to take it up as a full-time business. Ray feels that after 15 years, he is just beginning to take his craft to the next level. “I am now looking to develop characters and story lines with my pumpkins,” Ray envisions. “I want the pumpkins to transcend the carving and become magical creatures through stories, books, stop-motion and more.”

Ray chooses pumpkins with thick exteriors in order to carve three-dimensional faces into the surfaces. He also evaluates the right stem, color and shape for each project. He then creates the detailed and dramatic features by carefully carving into the pumpkin’s skin without breaking through its wall. “While pumpkin carving is largely a subtractive process, not many realize that you can add elements at times,” explains Ray. As he reveals, “super glue works on pumpkins, which can be very useful when adding on things such as horns and ears!”
