So I heard the Sophia Turner as Lara Croft announcement on the radio while at lunch, and the guy mentioned she was replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara… it’s been 22 years since those movies. They were considered bad at the time and have aged worse. There has been, what, 20? Tomb Raider games since then, including the 2013 series which was a full reboot of the series. There has been another movie. There is an animated show with 2 seasons on Netflix. What fan of this series still thinks of Angelina as Lara Croft?

So the Netflix Tomb Raider show is fine and fun… but it completely failed to learn the lessons of the most recent games. Those worked so well because they were relatively self-contained in an area, with well done myths that fit into history without overwriting it. Yamatei and Kitezh in particular both had well grounded reasons to have faded into myth and the supernatural elements were interesting and powerful additions but not end of the world stuff, and even at those civilizations height there were obvious reasons they weren’t conquering the world. Shadow gets away from that a bit, but it’s still pretty in-line with that idea. . The show goes so far the other way though. Multiple deities, worldwide calamities, jumping around the world episode to episode. And yes I know that’s what the older games were like, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. I mean, the villain in S2 wants to reduce the population but given the level of catastrophes that were unfolding in S1 how is it not already? A single hurricane causes massive destruction, so if you have those happening everywhere plus earthquakes, blizzards, volcanoes, and literal fire falling from the sky it’s going to be apocalyptic in a lot of places. It actually would’ve been interesting to explore. Instead S2 basically ignores everything except Lara’s character growth.

Now it does do some things well. I thought the treatment of Roth and Lara’s dad was well done and a nice departure from the routes previous games have gone. Lara’s character growth was good, though seeing her not fight to kill was odd. That girl is a monster, they should’ve done stuff with that. And then Sam of course. Having her back was so nice, so much of this iteration of Lara was defined by Sam(which made her exclusion from Rise and Shadow so egregious) and they work well together. If it get’s a season 3 please just let them have an actual conversation about all the shit they’ve been through. And then kiss

So since everyone loves gay witches I wanted to call your attention to two other series, featuring gay witches that actually get to be canonically gay. As much as I love Little Witch Academia, it’d have been even better if they could have been officially gay. Witch Hat Atelier might actually go there though, I’ll hold out hope til it doesn’t happen. Here’s two series that do canonically have wlws(witch loving witches).

First up… Love and Other Wicked Things

This is a very cute series, set in a modern world where witches are largely hidden. There’s a plot, but honestly 80% is just Rhia and Valerie being very gay and coming to terms with their feelings for each other. Bonus points for them getting together before the climax and actually getting to see them date. Fairly short, but complete series that delivers on both magic and gay witches.

Next up… Muted

This one definitely has plot, and deals with some pretty heavy topics. Also has the very rare polyamorous romance. A fantastic series, with 3 seasons that has a very well deserved end for an extremely hate-able villain.

Honorary mention to Aerial Magic, it was a very cute series that had a variety of gay witches but the abrupt ending hurts. It’s worth a read still, but be warned it wasn’t truly finished.
