god i know ive made 12 billion posts abt todd's specific brand of Torture but like it truly makes me fucking insane. the way there's no genuine malice behind it because todd's a stupid motherfucker who doesn't value human life and instead treats it as a commodity that can be weighed equally against other factors when making Business decisions. todd isn't interested in enacting direct violence against jesse because he doesn't have any ill feelings towards jesse—just a kind of curiosity. like jesse is the tarantula in the terrarium back at his apartment. and that makes it so much more excruciating because todd's interactions with him for the most part make it seem like he's Not in captivity. Not in hell. todd doesn't treat him like a threat or go to great lengths to exert his authority: he's a pet owner who knows his pet won't attack. no, not anymore, not after todd executed andrea as Punishment. which again, he didn't do out of malice, but out of a sense of procedural obligation: well, it doesn't make me happy to punish u, but u have to learn ur lesson so u don't do it again ok?? the chummy obliviousness is so much worse than direct cruelty. any onscreen violence we could have seen re: the captivity arc is nothing compared to the whiplash of todd "rewarding" jesse with the little treats u would give to a well-behaved dog or child between shooting his girlfriend in the head and making him ride in a truck bed with a days-old corpse.

the oil bath is death/a descent into the underworld, the space under the floorboards is a coffin, the circles that keep popping up are halos, the blue flowers in the intro are signaling a grave before the episode even starts, when mike sets the glass down the screen goes black and it sounds like a gunshot. nacho is dead and buried all along and there's nothing anybody can do about it.

but - and hear me out here - but but but BUT. what if. What if. What if he's not. cause i don't want him to be and vince is mean. what if he's alive and well and working in his dad's shop and occasionally doing jobs with/for mike because he got out after hector's stroke because gus never figured out the pill swap. or he got out after the staged shoutout because gus decided he'd served his purpose. what if he's alive and well and outlive everybody along with jesse. have you thought about that. because i have. i'm shouting into the void but i've thought about it okay.
