👉 www.darylhoward.com 👈 In 1972, after receiving a BFA from Sam Houston State University, Daryl Howard boarded a plane to Tokyo, Japan... While living at Yokota Air Force Base and teaching in the DoD schools there on base, she meet, and was invited to a Japanese dinner at the home of her soon to be mentor, Claude Holeman. The evening progressed uneventfully until Holeman mentioned one word...woodblock. An aficionado and collector, he soon revealed his collection of hundreds of rare Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and that, was the beginning of Daryl becoming hooked. Two years later, in 1974, Daryl was given the opportunity of a lifetime...an apprenticeship with Hodaka Yoshida, a master woodcutter and son of Hiroshi Yoshida. Hiroshi, who died in 1950, was literally the founder of the modern woodcut. He created the now famous and frequently recognized woodblock of Mt. Fuji. For one year, Daryl traveled by train across Tokyo, one night each week to Hodaka's small studio to study. After returning to the states in 1975, she went on to receive her MFA from UT Austin in 1977. Over four decades later, Daryl is still creating masterpieces in the traditional Japanese form of woodblock printing... Follow us to see and learn more!!!
