Clint shivered as he felt Natashaâs fingers on his arm. Â Each movement of her fingertips over his skin sent fresh tingles shooting up his spine.
Clint looked down at his own hands before responding to Natashaâs question.
"Since Moscow, at least," he murmured to the roof beneath them.  "Or Lisbon even."  He chuckled.  "When we first met, I thought you were as cold as you were beautiful.  But the more we worked together, the more I got to know youâŠ"
Clint trailed off as he pulled his eyes back up to look back at Natasha. He raised his hand to her face and gently brushed away the curtain of hair that had fallen over her eye, tucking the errant strands away behind her ear.  Letting his hand linger against her cheek, he leaned his face in towards her to look into her eyes.  Those eyes. So often stern, and yet over the years he had seen such pride in them, such fear, and yes, such joy.  Now he did not know what he saw in them, but he felt his chest swell with emotion as he gazed into their swirling green depths.
His voice faltered as he started to speak again.
"Iâ I saw myself in you.  But more⊠and better.  Definitely better looking."  He smiled again, and tilted his head even closer to hers.  "We understand each other, right?"
Natasha sighed softly at Clintâs admission. âThat long, huh?â She mentally went over all their missions, all of the down time theyâd spent together. There was nothing too overt there, maybe Clintâs eyes lingering on her for a bit too long, but that was the way most men reacted to her. And that certainly didnât mean he had feelings for her. She supposed sheâd acted much the same way towards Clint, as heâd wormed his way slowly into her heart over all their years of partnership.
She couldnât help but arch into Clintâs touch on her cheek and hair. Even though she logically knew her hair had no nerve endings, Clintâs hand sliding through her hair sent electricity down her spine. When she caught Clint sliding even closer, she was about to rebuke him. Tell him this was a bad idea and it would almost certainly get them fired. But then she saw the look in his eyes⊠almost like heâd been hypnotized. So open and bare in his affection, his respect for her. She felt disrespectful taking it all in when both of them were normally so guarded.
This was a tactical error as she found herself staring at Clintâs lips, pale and complemented by the light of the moon on them. Unconsciously, she licked her lips as he leaned towards her again, his breath now tingling her moistened lips. âNo arguments about me being the better looking one,â she joked, âUnderstandâŠwhat?â Natasha managed before her brain turned to goo between her ears and she closed the gap between them, sealing their lips together and sending fire through every part of her.
Okay, thought Clint, this looks bad.
Natasha was his oldest friend. Â Best friend, probably. Â Kate was a good kid, but she hadn't been through what they had. Â He didn't have the same kind of connection with her as he did with Nat. Â They understood each other. Â They were cut from the same cloth. Â They would take a bullet for each other in a heartbeat. Â At least, he knew that he would for Natasha, and he flattered himself to think that she might return then favor.
Natasha was his rock, as cold and desolate and beautiful as the Siberian wastes of her native land. Â But he knew that she was fragile, too â deep down they were both hurt and scared, trying to find their way through life the only way they knew how. Â They needed each other, and he couldn't let anything jeopardize the understanding they had with each other.
Except now her lips were pressed against his, and his nerves were sparking electric, drowning out every red flag and protest his mind was throwing up. Â Her lips were smoother than he'd ever imagined. Â He could feel her hot breath against his face, and he felt the tip of her moist tongue brush against his upper lip as he kissed her slightly open mouth.
One of his hands was still held against the roof in Natasha's tight grip, but the other still cradled her cheek. Â He let it slide around the back of her head and ran his fingers through her silky hair. Â His fingers stroked the nape of her neck, and he pulled her in tighter to kiss her mouth again.
This looks bad, he admitted to himself again. Â But he couldn't help it â he wanted to hold her so badly, to kiss her face and caress every inch of her body, that he couldn't control himself. Â To hell with what was smart, Clint though. Â To hell with the future. Â In the here and now, he needed Natasha.
