An anime that baits you in with cool giant robot v kaiju fights and then hits you with a surreal exploration of depression, grief and self-actualization.
A story about a boy who thinks he deserves love but never truly receives it from others nor from himself, causing him to destroy the world that forced him to fight to protect it.
Also they ran out of budget in the last 3 episodes and it leads to one of the most bizarre endings to any show ever.
Then they contextualized it with a movie that changed the ending from bizarre but hopeful to outright depressing.
