Shera Was Right: The Fat Acceptance to Skinny Bitch Pipeline
Does anyone else remember an old Shera video where she said Lizzo would eventually lose weight and that her fat schtick was just branding? It was around 2018/2019. I think someone was asking her about how some women claim to enjoy being fat and don’t feel the need to improve their physical health in order to attract better options.
She basically responded that they do care deep down, and that Lizzo would milk the novelty of being a fat artist, build the money and visibility from it, and then slim down once she reached a certain level of success. In simpler terms—the fat acceptance thing is a farce.
At the time, younger me was defensive and very SJW about it—even though I wasn’t even a fat person, oof the psychological conditioning at that time was strong af. But adult me, with a little more life experience and a fully developed brain, understands exactly what she meant.
Most people do not like being fat or overweight. They love the identity, the marginalization, the perceived community, the victim narrative, the performance of being unbothered — but once an actual solution becomes accessible, suddenly the conversation changes to ‘i finally get the body i have always wanted’.
And now with Ozempic, Wegovy, semaglutides, GLP-1s, affordable gym memberships, training programs, etc., we are watching that happen in real time. A lot of the same people who spent years claiming they were not concerned with slimming down or fitting beauty standards are now, in fact, slimming down to meet the beauty standards. Lizzo, Tess Holiday, Meghan Trainor, Kelly Osborne, Oprah, even the athletic goddess Serena fucking Williams; the list is long. (No serena was never fat, but in certain demographics she was seen as ‘big’. And if you catch what im saying or just pay attention to her preferred social network, you can see why she would take advantage of the first thing to make her slim down and become dainty adjacent 💀It was very obvious that her size bothered her)
I’m not even mad at it. I just think it proves something people were not allowed to say out loud for years. Many people were not rejecting thinness. They just didn’t have the right tool yet.
Anyways, Shera was right. Again.
*p.s.- I don’t have a problem with fat people. Two of my top 5, most beautiful women i have ever seen are ashley graham and precious lee. I just think it’s funny how there will be a widespread trend where people will try to convince larger society of something that we all know is true*
