3D Sweeties book opening

3D Sweeties, Julian Glander, website, @glanderco Julian’s book is a compilation of quirky and colorful gag comics inspired by the storytelling structure in fables (as in, the main character is either punished or rewarded for their actions). At the venue, Books are Magic, Julian showed a brief presentation and answered a few questions from the audience. And there were cookies shaped like the book.

Hashimoto Contemporary NYC

“Scandalized”, Miranda Tacchia, website, @mrmtacchia Miranda’s work focuses on dating, relationships, and being a generally unimpressed woman today.

“Xenophilia”, Lauren YS, website, @squid.licker Lauren’s paintings and ink drawings depict writhing animal/alien-like figures inspired by both science fiction and traditional Japanese shunga.

Both of these artists, as you can see, make use of female nudity and deal very clearly with the body. These are things I am not quite yet comfortable discussing in my own illustration, but it was great to see various other artists addressing them so visibly.

We had an open studio this past Tuesday! I asked everyone who passed by my table who their favorite was:

So clearly I need to work on Amber and Key to make their designs a bit more interesting! Everyone liked Olive’s hat. Lesson learned: wear a cool hat and everyone will love you.

I’m definitely struggling a bit with Amber and Key’s costumes – I’m not really great with armor! Key’s definitely needs more detail and texture (time to look at some mermaids), and I need to work on the form for Amber.

I also hadn’t noticed that I gave Olive a different position from the other characters; I need to give some more thought into everyone’s personality and how their sprite should be posed for everyday conversation.

Meet ya boy Key! He has water and metal magic, and he likes to surf but it’s basically cheating because he can control the waves ...

Meet Manolin (Juan Manuel)! He supports, heals, and plays music. His bow doubles as a harp! I haven’t decided whether or not I want to make him a human color or a green-color (leaning towards human color; you don’t have to be green to be a nymph, right?). Manolin wears a windbreaker and short shorts because why not.

okay, so what are you going to do exactly??

My idea is to create a dating sim in which the playable character is a typical shopkeeper in an MMO world who sells magical items and ability boosters to the “main champions”.

The player gets to choose from four romance-able characters (five if I can). All of the champions are designed based off of typical MMO character classes (warrior, tank, support, etc).

No matter which champion the player picks, a similar plot plays out: 

Champions are fighting against Big Evil, this is the daily grind.

The shopkeeper and the player’s chosen champion flirt and begin to fall in love.

Daily grind continues, romantic shenanigans ensue.

Big Evil gains power, and the shopkeeper has to evacuate the area along with all the other NPCs.

Dramatic Scene™ occurs in which the champion has to lead the shopkeeper through a danger zone and protect them ;^)

Big Evil kidnaps the shopkeeper as a trap for the champion!!! Will they endanger the team to save their one true love???

Of course they do, and defeat Big Evil in the process, the end.

The Champion the player chooses will have an effect on the story in the style of dialogue and in the graphics, but the main events will be the same.

There are two possible endings for each character: one in which the romance succeeds, and one in which it fails.
