thinking about how shane and ilya's expressions of queerness are so different and how it doesn't relate to their preferred positions during sex at all, because it's so refreshing to see.

shane is a bottom through and through, but unlike in many other queer media, he isn't effeminate or delicate. he's masculine and brash and jocky, he works his grill and sets up fires and wears fucking.. khaki pants or whatever. he's just a guy. a guy that prefers to be fucked.

ilya likes topping (although he would be down for whatever as long as it makes shane happy) but he isn't some burly, macho "i will dominate you" dude like tops are shown. he wears his cunty little jean paul gaultier tiger print and slutty tank tops, and he's sassy and has a gay accent in russian and makes these flamboyant hand gestures. they don't take away from his masculinity, but the important thing is that ilya doesn't have to be gruff and manly and stoic.

and it makes me so happy to see that the weird gender role adjacent stereotypes about topping and bottoming arent placed on them.

Obviously Ilya is a chronic clothes thief, we see this at the cottage, but after they move in together he starts getting fuzzy on the details of what belongs to whom. One day he’s folding laundry, holds up a t-shirt, and genuinely has no idea whose it is. He just folds it and puts it in Shane’s drawer.

And then at some point it stops even being a question. There’s no “his” or “mine,” it’s all just theirs.

And one day Shane comes home and says, “I got us some new socks,” and Ilya tackles him to the floor.

Haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but I wonder if other people have noticed.

Shane says his room is 1410. Because of superstition, hotels famously “don’t have” a 13th floor. It goes directly from 12 to 14, which we see the elevator numbers do after Ilya bumps into Yuna on his way up to their first hook up.

I can’t think of a better metaphor for someone in the closet. The 14th floor insists it is the 14th floor, people regard it as the 14th floor. As Mitch Hedburg points out, the people on the 14th floor, you know what floor you’re really on.

Anyway, it’s wanting to be someone, something else. Pretending to be someone, something else. But inside, you know what you really are.

the long game problem truly could've been solved if it was treated more like the Orpheus Eurydice situation that it is. Shane is just as miserable being separated as Ilya is, but He's doing the very logical thing of looking ahead and focusing on the possibility of a safe future where they make it out together, all while desperately craving that future could be now but knowing thats just not possible for them, because first they must Escape Hell, separately but together. (You know this and I know this. Together we trace out the trail away from doom. There isn’t hope, there is a trail. I follow you.)

whereas what Ilya needs is the very emotionally charged Idea of being Seen, of being Heard, in a situation where hes showing not telling to someone who has their back turned, so While Ilya is under the impression that Shane doesn't see how miserable he is, Shane is under the impression that they have both agreed to be miserable apart now in order to be happy together later.
